Gary..thanks. I will try tomorrow (almost midnight here). I may have left
off the = sign. I didn't know about the "--dry run" switch..I'll give that
a go first.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Steel Guages and driver update question

2018-05-14 Thread gjr80
I prefer to use full paths when running the utilities and passing files. I
would use (I run a setup.py install)

$ /home/weewx/bin/wee_extension --install=/path/to/extension_file/
steelseries-2.6.3.tar.gz

or for a .deb or dpkg install

$ /usr/share/weewx/wee_extension --install=/path/to/extension_file/
steelseries-2.6.3.tar.gz

One will work and the other will error out. sudo may be needed if your user
does not have sufficient privileges. Add --dry-run if you wish beforehand
to check that the extension will install. If all goes well you should see
something like:

Request to install '/var/tmp/steelseries-2.6.3.tar.gz'
Extracting from tar archive /var/tmp/steelseries-2.6.3.tar.gz
Saving installer file to /home/weewx/bin/user/installer/SteelSeries
Saved configuration dictionary. Backup copy at /home/weewx/weewx.conf.
20170320124410
Finished installing extension '/var/tmp/steelseries-2.6.3.tar.gz'

with different paths/details as applicable to your install.

The install will cause us to lose the gauges.js changes and maybe a few
other (gauge related) things, but nothing too much.

Posting only occurs at archive intervals - which was the reason for the
other questions!!

Maybe you have not waited long enough

Without a full log from start of weewx thru to at least 2 archive intervals
it is hard to diagnose anything more

The log snippet you did post showed nothing obviously wrong, but the
snippet was far far too short to be very useful.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Steel Guages and driver update question

2018-05-14 Thread gjr80
Steve,

Just noticed some odd version numbers in some scripts. I can look at your
gauges.js at http://www.photokinetics.org/Weather/ss/scripts/gauges.js and
it says gauges.js is version 2.5.1 (circa line 33). The weewx-steelseries
extension contains v2.6.3 and the current release version on the
SteelSeries Gauges github site is v2.6.4. I suspect this may well be the
source of the current issue. You mentioned earlier that you installed
weewx-steelseries 2.6.3, that should have put gauges.js v2.6.3 in
skins/ss/scripts and that should in due course be copied to your web
server. Can you check skins/ss/scripts/gauges.js and see what version it
is? if it is earlier than 2.6.3 then it looks like the weewx-steelseries
extension did not install correctly.

the log output, as far as it went, looks perfectly ok to me - and as may be
expected.

data should be being posted to wunderground - so not sure what you mean
when you say data is not being posted! where is it not 'posting' to??
what do you mean when you say it is not being posted??

The log snippet was not long enough to see what happened at your next
archive interval ie next posting occasion, and the snippet did not say what
your archive interval was either as the snippet started too late in the
startup sequence!!!

 this command

 sudo ls /usr/share/weewx

got me a file listing of some daemon stuff and a bunch of weewx stuff.

I guess that's good but I don't know what to do next.

I ran this command (after reading the docs for the 50th time)

 sudo /etc/init.d/weewx start

and it says "starting weewx service."

doesn't seem like it's coming back online though.

thanks everyone for all their help!

Steve,

I used your data file on my gauges page and it works fine, so I know
gauge-data.txt is OK. It will be a mis-configuration somewhere I suspect.
Could you post your [RealtimeGaugeData] config settings from weewx.conf, I
know you posted it earlier but we have since added a few settings to
support http posting gauge-data.txt to your web server.

[weewx-user] Re: Resolved Fine Offset USB issues: A different solution!

2018-05-14 Thread Greg from Oz
I took the battery out of my console...permanently and I put in a normally
closed relay into the 5V of the usb cable that goes to the console.
I run a cron job that checks to see if the weather index.html file has NOT
been changed in 20 minutes. If is has not then the same script restarts
weewx. If it still doesn't update then the home automation turns on the
power to the relay and it opens and drops the power to the console and
resets the console. Weex is started again.
If all of that doesn't work then the script runs wee_device --clear-memory

if all of that doesn't work I have a backup console...

Touch wood...I haven't had any issues with the fineoffset console for
years. I wrote the script when I was USING cumulusit locked up lots.

Steve, I wouldn't be too worried about weeWX. WeeWX will leave bin/user and
your skins alone, the biggest issue is whether any changes in the weeWX code
base might break any extras/addons but there really have not been any earth
shattering changes between 3.6.2 and 3.8.0 so should be smooth sailing.

Steve,

Ok, we were looking for gauge-data.txt in the wrong place. In
skins/ss/scripts/gauges.js locate the realTimeUrlWeewx setting and add gauges/
before gauge-data.txt at the end of the line. You will probably have something
like:

realTimeUrlWeewx = '../gauges/gauge-data.txt';

Save, stop, start and it should pickup the change on the next report cycle.

Thoughts - sure. Get yourself some Linux training. Really.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but you will drive yourself nutso battling this
stuff
if you're a "gimme a ok button to click" kind of person. Save yourself the
blood pressure.

There are a variety of free Linux classes online. One good one was the
edx.org Linux class.

There are a zillion others. At a minimum you need to learn how to navigate
the filesystem,
be able to edit a file, understand the concept of users and permissions
(and how/when to use 'sudo'),
how to check services are ok, and where logfiles are and how to view them
effectively.

You mentioned it's a pi, so you are probably running as user 'pi' by
default. That means you'll generally
need to preface your commands with "sudo" in order to do things.

Biggest question is whether he installed weewx using the packaged software,
or if he installed it
manually using the "setup.py" method. The prepackaged software should have
done the right thing
to enable weewx to run at boot. The setup.py method has some additional
manual steps the installing
person needs to do to enable it to run at boot.

The installation instructions are at
http://weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm#Where_to_find_things which
has some tabs that have the (varying) locations stuff might be installed to
for the different operating systems
and installation methods. You're on a pi so you're the Debian or setup.py
methods.

If he installed via setup.py you should find the installed software via:

   - ls /home/weewx

If he used the packaged version, the software is in a bunch of places:

   - ls /etc/weewx
   - ls /usr/share/weewx

Start there. One of the two variants will find stuff. Which one does on
your system ?
We can work the startup file thing after we figure out how he installed
your system.

Yeah... I had to learn this after 4 years of using weewx, somehow never

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Steel Guages and driver update question

2018-05-14 Thread Steve2Q
Gary, I am not sure if this info will help, but I decided to check what is
happening on the web server. Maybe this will be of some value.

I found there are 3 gauge-data.txt files. The first one is in
/photokinetics/Weather. It updates every 2 minutes with a file size of
1,511.

The second is in /photokinetics/Weather/gauges. It is the only file in the
folder, and it updates every 2 *seconds* with a file size of 1,511.

The third is in /photokinetics/Weather/ss. It updates every 2 minutes with
a file size of 2,309. There are also .png files in this folder (the gauge
"picture" files?) which all update every 2 minutes.

Perhaps there is a place in one of the weewx files that has to point at the
file in /gauges ?

Steve

[weewx-user] Re: ftp error on upload

2018-05-14 Thread Greg Brougham
Issue is likely to be the path

/volume(sda1)/ftp/weather

Try uploading to the default location or ./weather, assuming that the
weather directory has been created in advance

[weewx-user] Re: absolute newbie needs help - how run weewx?

2018-05-14 Thread Andrew Milner
In the command line window ….(or terminal)

Try to use command line raher than the GUI when using weewx - it is much
much easier.

Did you read the user guide

and the running weewx section and the running as a daemon section?

If it did not restart automatically then your son-in-law may well have not
done things correctly, so the instructions may not help too much either!!
You need your son-in-law to find the time to correct his installation!!

[weewx-user] ftp error on upload

2018-05-14 Thread Bryan
I am trying to set weewx to upload the web data to a disk connected to the
wireless router with FTP.
I am not seeing any data in the disk directory and am seeing several of the
following errors in the log (basically for every file weewx tries to
transfer)

May 14 07:25:46 weatherpi weewx[362]: ftpupload: Attempt #3. Failed
uploading /volume(sda1)/ftp/weather/NOAA/NOAA-2018-05.txt to 192.168.0.1.
Reason: 550 Permission denied.

I am sure I have the user information in the weewx.conf file correct.
Also, I tried uploading a file with ftp to the same folder in the terminal
window and it worked without issue.
Any help solving this issue would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

P.S.
This is the ftp part of the config file

# To upload files from something other than what HTML_ROOT is set
# to above, specify a different HTML_ROOT here.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Funky symbols in plots

2018-05-14 Thread Andrew Milner
That will be because the yearly plots are only updated once a day I believe
- and I think he monthly and weekly plots are updated only every 2 or 3
hours.

To force an update of all plots you need to delete the old .png files - and
then then it becomes easier to see when they are re-generated
