[Bug 28071] Upload wizard does gracefully handle no thumbnail errors

(In reply to comment #3)
> I think this is fixed as of r84730

To be clear:

Actually there *was* error handling if the thumbnail could not be generated.
The server reports thumberror in that case.

In r84730 I fixed the case where the thumbnail URL is given to the client but
it mysteriously 404s or has some other issue.

One reason could be the relatively low size allowed for thumbnails served via
UploadStash; given how video previews currently work on MediaWiki it could be
the case that 256K was not enough. Other people have asked for this limit to be
raised, so I upped the maximum thumbnail size to 1MB in r84731.

The problem with vipsthumbnail is that it stores the uncompressed image. For a
large image, it could take gigabytes of disk space. ImageMagick does this also,
that's one of the reasons we want to get rid of it.

[Bug 28215] Unbreak Resource loader

--- Comment #7 from mybugs.m...@gmail.com 2011-03-25 01:51:48 UTC ---
I wonder if this was the cause of the problem described on IRC on last
month[1], when the extension refused loading a gadget marked with
[ResourceLoader] even if its contents was just [2]:

  var test = 'ok';

At that time it was necessary to remove[3] [ResourceLoader] from
[[b:pt:MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition‎]], since the script wasn't being loaded at
all.

After recent changes in the code (r84683 I believe) the script is loaded if the
code [ResourceLoader] is added[4] to definition of the gadget.

Even if the issues were unrelated, thanks for fixing it! ;-)

--- Comment #15 from Tim Starling  2011-03-25 01:40:17
UTC ---
There are some style issues which anyone could fix up, like using English for
variable names:

$parlv = substr_count($this->ptitle->getPrefixedText(), '/');

whitespace, lack of line breaks where there should be line breaks:

switch( strtolower( $options['showpath'] ) ) {
case 'no': $this->showpath = 'no'; break;
...
if( $this->mode != 'bar' ) $pn = $this->token . $pn;

Also, it uses non-portable, unnecessary SQL identifier quoting:

$options['ORDER BY'] = '`page_title`' . $order;
...
$conditions[] = '`page_title` ' . $dbr->buildLike( $parent . '/',
$dbr->anyString() );

It uses Parser::parse() when it should be using Parser::recursiveTagParse().
This is an efficiency issue, since parse() does link existence checks
immediately, whereas recursiveTagParse() defers them until the next batch. It's
also a correctness issue, since recursiveTagParse() guards certain syntax
elements against reinterpretation, whereas parse() does not.

Otherwise it should be OK to enable.

Not templates? Dewiki has templates reviewable.

If this is like dewiki, then there is only one review level, thus there is no
use for 'validate'. Groups can be granted, but not rights directly. The
'review' flag could be granted by putting a user in the 'editor' group. A
'trusted' group could be created, so that 'autoreview' could be granted by
putting a user in the group.

It would be much simpler to let Admins grant these things, and not have a
FlagGiver group.

Are these tables in any way similar to the tables used for transliteration by
ICU? I wrote a PHP extension a couple of years ago which provides an interface
to ICU's transliteration functions to PHP:

http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/transliterate/

The original idea was to use it to display transliterations of foreign names
that come to a wiki via CentralAuth, but I never developed it any further.
Would it be useful to provide access to these ICU transliterators via the
extension you have developed?

We are now using Resource Loader, so we get a lot of RTL for free. It's
possible for English readers to test this by setting $wgLanguageCode to
'enrtl'.

What's buggy, first pass:

0 - issue with Resource Loader -- it ONLY responds to $wgLanguageCode; in other
words the entire wiki has to be set to use an RTL language. That works fine for
Wikipedia but what about Commons? So, we can make it work with RTL but it won't
be deployable on Commons?

See related resource loader bug:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28228

1 - the arrow progress thing at the top of the page is messed up. Probably a
matter of flipping some images and fixing CSS.

2 - for some reason, the "$1 of $2 files uploaded" message is rendered as "of
$2 files uploaded $1"

Otherwise it looks like it actually works. Here are Trevor's notes about how to
RTLify things:

- snip --

Basically there's 3 things to know about RL's RTL handling other than "it's
like magic!".

1. /* @noflip */ means don't flip this.
You can use it on either an entire rule or a single property.

2. url(icon-ltr.png) becomes url(icon-rtl.png)
This is because we use the "--swap_ltr_rtl_in_url" option. We don't use the
"--swap_left_right_in_url" though. So if your images are named accordingly, you
will be all set. CSSJanus looks for "ltr" and "rtl" preceded by a word
boundary, so turtle.png is safe, but tu.rtle.png is going to become
tu.ltre.png.

3. When using /* @noflip */ together with prefixing the selector with
"body.rtl" you can write an RTL only CSS rule without worrying about it
applying to LTR or having to write it backwards because it's going to get
flipped for you.

You can play with CSSJanus here: http://cssjanus.commoner.com/

- Trevor

I wouldn't say no-one's interested. I am, but I've been to busy. I actually
have page icons on the roadmap for skin rewriting, since as far as I'm
concerned, they're part of skinning. However it's at a post-template-language
implementation point. I want to take advantage of the xml/html based template
language's ability to usage detect. ie: If you omit the page icons' marker
it'll automatically inject it into the page title's content so that it still
shows up.

It seems that Resource Loader will send RTL CSS files only if LocalSettings.php
has $wgLanguageCode set to be a known RTL language, like 'ar' or 'he' or
'enrtl'.

That works fine for the Wikipedias, which are monolingual.

But a site like Commons is multilingual. People should be able to use a
different interface based only on their language preference, or even the
uselang= parameter.

[Bug 15607] Implement the Interlanguage extension in Wikipedia

I'm not aware of any proposal. The current software makes it necessary to have
one wiki per second-level domain.

> 2) Would this be used for the non-article namespace?

The software won't restrict it to the main namespace, so yes, I imagine it will
be used for other namespaces.

> 3) Would this be used for InterProject links?

No.

> Potentially any link list could
> point to any Wikimedia project, and the script could filter it down to

> + German Wiktionary, etc.

Sure, anything's possible, with sufficient software development resources. But
such resources have not materialised, so I'm just looking to enable this
extension with a few minor tweaks.

If we need to have a stopgap solution, I'd prefer it to be implemented in a way
that doesn't lock us in to a particular architecture going forward. We are
talking about having a special syntax for interlanguage link references in
articles:

{{#interlanguage: Pied Currawong}}

As long as we stick with something simple like that, and don't expose
implementation details to the users on the content wikis, then we can easily
change the data source in the future.

In particular, I don't want to see:

{{#interlanguage: Wikipedia-Interlanguage:Pied Currawong}}

Sure, it's possible, if resources can be allocated for it. Note that there will
be a need for policy, review and access control. Nothing is ever simple on a
wiki.

'foo' => null

is a shorthand for:

'foo' => array( ApiBase::PARAM_TYPE => 'string', ApiBase::PARAM_DFLT => '' )

So the output is perfectly correct

> Sorry, but how has it "all been dealt with"? A proper fix ("login & log local
> account creation only on write actions such as edits")

That is one of many fixes. Consider the title of the bug: "Auto account
creation creates privacy vulnerability". The description of this privacy
vulnerability then says that it comes from logging the auto account creation.

The solution chosen kept auto account creation but made it so it wasn't logged.

What you describe is a new problem:

> Simply disabling the log has severe consequences for keeping out abusive
> usernames. I've asked for the opinion of other admins on German Wikipedia and
> they affirm it hinders their efforts and that there are already trolls taking
> advantage of the log being removed.

Please use Bug #28227 to discuss this new problem. If you think the only
proper fix is "local account creation should not happen on HTTP GETs", then
that, too, is a new bug.

You may not like the solution that was provided for this bug, but re-opening it
is not likely to change CentralAuth to your liking. This bug was about a
privacy concern, and that has been addressed.

  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement

AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

Depends on: 19161

In order to address privacy concerns from auto-created accounts (Bug #19161),
$wgLogAutocreatedAccounts was created so that accounts which were auto-created
because of CentralAuth would not be logged.

This change makes it difficult for admins to patrol their wiki's for malicious
users since they can't see newly created accounts.

A way to handle the privacy concerns without impeding the admins' work should
be found.

action=undelete and action=protect you mean

They pass the variables straight into something else, where the default
parameter is $blah = '', so passing null isn't nice.

'foo' => '' in protect/undelete give

Which is correct. Would you rather I made those explicit?

I can see some benefit switching => null to array( ApiBase::PARAM_TYPE =>
'string' ), as it explicitally sets no default, and the default used is null.

Is that what you were wanting originally?

Sometimes it is helpful to hide a user group from the output. It is now
possible: You have to get all possible groups and remove the group you want to
hide.

But it is easy, when the api can do that by itself.

Maybe use "!group".

   Version: 1.18-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: API
AssignedTo: roan.katt...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: duplicate...@googlemail.com
CC: bryan.tongm...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net,
vasi...@gmail.com, soxre...@gmail.com

When the shortcut for type declaration inside the api documentation is used,
then action=paraminfo adds wrongly a empty default attribute to the output, if
the value is null.

See ImageInfo:
'continue' => null
gives:
name="continue" type="string" *default=""*

Looks like strval return an emtpy string for null input:
$a['default'] = strval( $p );

The hosting company made an exception now in their VCL (?) and if i put my
MediaWiki installation in the /wiki folder it is working correctly. But as i'm
not having the MediaWiki in the /wiki folder i have to change things.

When put the whole MW install in a /wiki folder it's working correctly. Think
it's their way of editing their VCL exceptions.

Also, a bug isn't really the right spot to ask for support for this. Please use

The nice thing about the config file type system is that default configuration
is cleanly separated from the LocalSettings.php user configuration.

This was added for upload wizard in r83974 ( marked bug resolved )

[Bug 28071] Upload wizard does gracefully handle no thumbnail errors

Neil were you able to get a better idea of what the issue was when we
recreated it on prototype? I don't think it will be an issue for commons since
it will have a working install of thumbnails. But it would be good to test
before we deploy ;)
I think all you need to do for this bug is possibly double the size of
thumbnail proxy, and possibly put a try catch around the asset load call.

[Bug 20246] Install Extension:Transliterator on fr and en.wiktionary

2011-03-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20246

--- Comment #15 from Conrad Irwin  2011-03-24 16:36:39
UTC ---
Transliterations are used particularly in translations tables where the
alphabet of the destination language is not Latin (see
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Uzbekistan#Translations), and throughout entries
in non-Latin alphabets, see for example
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D5%88%D6%82%D5%A6%D5%A2%D5%A5%D5%AF%D5%BD%D5%BF%D5%A1%D5%B6.

For further context:

http://wikt.jelzo.com/wiki/Test:el shows a comparison of Greek words and their
automatic transliteration versus the transliterations that existed on
Wiktionary at some point during 2010.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/User_talk:Conrad.Irwin/Transliterator.php
contains some desired transliteration maps for various languages, along with
which standards they correspond to (where applicable).
