If there are two pages with the defaultsort "Vallenberg" and "Wallenberg", I
think "V" should be sorted before "W" as if "W" was a diacritic of "V", but it
is not critical. Earlier "W" was just regarded as another way of writing "V".
The letter "W" was almost only used in names and foreign words. Then somebody
invented 'World Wide Web', and you know the rest of the story better than me...

When I requested the problem to my server's helpcenter, they said they blocked
this proc_open() for the reason of Security problems.

I cannot check my Mediawiki version page, and error message emerges like this:
my mediawiki exists in http://ellif.tk/lif2

Realistically, this is probably not ready for shell keyword: $wgMiserMode does
too many things, and [the absence of] all of them would be concentrated on a
single database (s3) for all ~540 such wikis.

Many modules may require user to specify a "langcode", which we should provide
in the base.

Invalid characters (validated as not matching ^[a-z:_\-]+$ or something similar
by the Language classes) will cause an error to be reported.

The base class will autodetect if any params have the 'langcode' type and
report the that module may return this error (similar to 'badcontinue')

error screencap

does not display the box properly, and the text does not wrap. happens on
monobook and vector css. I properly placed the template with a  subst, and then
I saw this. 
happens for all the level templates, but I haven't check the other warnings as
of yet.
it appears that the talk-reflinks template might have a similar problem.

I am moving the GeoIP manifests under a new puppet module (
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/53714/ ) and wanted to test it out on labs. 
Turns out virt0 puppet master does not have any GeoIP content in
puppet:///volatile/GeoIP

Re-opening this for further consideration.

A few points:

* a half-decade has passed, so the caching situation may be different now;

* we might be able to do this only for logged-in users (but keep the current
behavior for IP blocks and IP range blocks); and

* on smaller sites, the performance issues shouldn't be nearly as bad, so this
may be something we can stick behind $wgMiserMode, to at least allow most wikis
to behave sanely here.

Or we could investigate doing this in client-side JavaScript.

Offering an "edit this page" tab and section edit links when we know the user
is blocked is kind of insanely bad user interface/user experience.

I don't think it's a great idea to have these variables included in every
non-mobile page view, it's quite a bit of bloat. Instead, you could call
addJsConfigVars() conditionally, based on whether the mobile skin is being
used. And you could follow the advice on the doc comment of
OutputPage::getJSVars() and move the invariant configuration
(wgMFPhotoUploadEndpoint etc.) to the startup module.

First occurrence of the error in the logs is at 22:44:34, last is at 22:44:42.
It probably was the new version being half-deployed for ~8 seconds during the
sync-dir.

On wiki there are 335 numbered notes, the PDF skips many of the numbers so that
only 58 are actually present, and the numbers that are present don't match the
wiki numbering.  To be clear this is testing the Barack Obama article with
_traditional template-based citations_.  So whatever change was made appears to
have caused problems with normal article rendering.


So altogether these changes look like good progress towards handling Lua, BUT
there also seem to be negative impacts the presentation of other unrelated page
elements, especially references.  This includes the traditional {{cite}}
template-based references.

composer as default component builder and could not search on GitHUB or some
else MediaWiki Parser component.

Right. We already have "shell" and "ops" (where "ops" is basically a synonym
for "root"). Perhaps renaming "ops" to "root(s)" might make sense, but then
we're getting closer to Ori's original suggestion to just rely on the actual
Puppet definitions.

I agree, there are tasks that can be done by a shell user on fenari, let's say
deploy an Apache config change, that doesn't need root, while other things do
actually need root users. split into "shell" and "roots"

Having project pages in the same namespace as instances makes no sense. We want
to be able to search them without searching all of the instances too. We should
make a maintenance script to move the project pages into the main namespace,
and change the code to write project pages into a different location.

H. If we could clarify/cleanup the "ops"/"shell" confusion, that might be a
nice enhancement. I'm not sure I like the keywords as individual words
(particularly "restricted"), but that's likely fixable with additional words
(e.g., "needs-root" or "restricted-sysadmin" or something).

We must also take note that process documentation all over the Wikimedia
ecosystem refers to the "shell" keyword (e.g., for submitting [[m:wiki
configuration requests]]). So any plan that removes the "shell" keyword would
need a communication strategy.

Icu seems to support making custom collations at run time (based on docs).
However php's intl extension doesnt seem to expose this. So we are probably
left with hacking it over top (aka turn w to v before feeding it to icu). Or
somehow getting upstream to make a sv historical collation (they already have 2
sv collations - reformed and normal) however that would probably be a difficult
process I imagine. I suppose third option is getting php upstream to expose
custom collation maling methods

To clarify, when you say sort the same way do you mean totally identical, or
just primary identical? (The sort algorithm has 3 levels. We check the primary
level first ( ie different letters: A vs B) if there is a tie on that level for
all letters then we move on to check accents (roughly). If there is a tie again
we move on to checking case distinction. In your case it sounds like you would
want V and W to be the same on the primary level but different on the secondary
level - is that the case? (Which might be a moot point since the hack over top
solution would only allow making them identical.)

Also, there is a patch underway to make setting different collations on a
per-category basis possible, see bug 44667 (it's a part of that branch). You
might want to wait until it's available, to be able to set V=W for
Swedish-language categories, and "normal" sorting for the rest.

My first attempt to upgrade mwlib failed. I had to fix another bug, which I
introduced in mwlib 0.15. I had hoped to upgrade the code right now, but greg
says that's not possible.

Can you offer us some deployment windows?
