[Wikimedia-l] Join the GAC!

2014-02-14 Thread Alex Wang
Hello Everyone!

We could use some fresh volunteers in the Grant Advisory Committee (GAC)!
As you may know, the GAC are community volunteers who are explicitly
invited[1] to review and evaluate grant proposals made in the Wikimedia
Foundation Project and Event Grants Program[2], and offer advice to both
grant applicants and the Foundation.

Read all about it on the Candidates page[3]. New members will be inducted
March 24th 2014, so be sure to step forward before then.

Please help this message reach as many people as possible, by relaying it
to appropriate lists and village pumps.

And many thanks to our current and former GAC members!

Cheers,

Alex

Today, our organization celebrates anniversary - 5 years from the
 date
of creation.

Exactly 5 years ago, on May 31, 2009, in Kyiv was held the
 constituent
meeting, which approved the bylaws and elected its first Board of the
  new
organization, known as Wikimedia Ukraine.

Our community has gone through a long and difficult path. Birthday of
Wikimedia Ukraine for our community is the third remarkable date this
year. On January 30 was the 10th anniversary of the establishment of
Ukrainian Wikipedia and on May 12 Ukrainian Wikipedia has crossed the
threshold of 500 000 articles.

We want to thank to Wikimedia Foundation Inc. for their help, to our
neighboring communities for fruitful cooperation with us and of
 course
to our community for their contributions!

Regards, Levon Azizian
Deputy chair
Wikimedia Ukraine

[Wikimedia-l] Inspire Campaign: Help turn ideas into action!

2015-03-24 Thread Alex Wang
Hello Wikimedians,

On March 4th, the Community Engagement team initiated the first “Inspire
Campaign”, a drive to foster and support new ideas to improve gender
diversity on Wikimedia projects. The organizers set a goal of having 100
proposals by the end of March; this was met in the first week, and the
total now stands at 220 ideas, with a few more days more to go! The
campaign has brought in 492 participants to the process so far, nearly
hitting its target of 500 participants.

While discussion about gender has been active, the environment has largely
remained friendly and productive. The Inspire team would like to especially
thank the Meta community and its admins for helping to keep the process
positive and running smoothly. Discussion has been further aided by a
friendly spaces guideline for participants, which most everyone involved
has respectfully followed.[1]

However, the campaign is far from done.

The next step is developing and supporting viable ideas to become real
initiatives. We need your help, whether in the form of an endorsement for a
strong idea, or constructive suggestions on a proposal that needs more
work. Feedback from community members is key to helping an idea evolve,
and incorporating past learning and knowledge is very important for the
future success of these proposals.

You can explore ideas by category[2] or through a ‘leaderboard’ of the most
endorsed ideas[3]. And a list of ideas that have already expanded into
grant proposals can be seen here[4]. We hope to see you over at the
IdeaLab, and, remember, there are still a few days to help create
actionable ideas before March 31st!

If funding is needed to implement your idea, be sure to expand your idea
into a grant proposal before the campaign ends March 31st. Funding
decisions will be made by April 30th.

Cheers,

The Inspire Team

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Inspire Campaign launches today!

2015-03-04 Thread Alex Wang
Hello Wikimedians,

Today we are pleased to announce the launch of the Inspire Campaign in
IdeaLab!

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire

This campaign aims to encourage, foster, and support new ideas for
improving gender diversity on Wikimedia projects. Less than 20% of
Wikimedia contributors are women, and many important topics are still
missing in our content. We invite all Wikimedians to participate in the
campaign on Meta-wiki by sharing your ideas, skills and feedback, and by
helping to spread the word in your local communities. The campaign runs
until March 31.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions,
community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new!
Grants are available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects developed
during this campaign that need financial support. Constructive, positive
feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your
skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. We
hope experienced community members will also watch the IdeaLab pages to
help keep the discussions positive and constructive. Join us at the Inspire
Campaign and help our projects better represent the world’s knowledge!

Cheers,

Alex the Inspire Team

[Wikimedia-l] Inspire Campaign launches today!

   G. Balachandran, a septuagenarian who lives outside of Ernakulum in
  Kerala

  after
   a
stroke left him paralyzed. “He’s much sharper now,” said his wife
   Jagadamma
K. “He’s made a lot of new friends, and that’s been good for his
  health.”

For us in Malayalam Wikipedia, today is a black day, for having lost a
great beacon on our voyage to ultimate openness and freedom in
 knowledge
   and wisdom.

Yet, we feel, BabuG has made his life stamped immortal for ever and has
shown us the pathway we should follow in continuing our humble
contributions to the ultimate cause of mankind.

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing Inspire Campaign Grantees

2015-05-01 Thread Alex Wang
Hi All,

Today we're pleased to announce a new group of grantees working to increase
gender diversity in Wikimedia projects.

In early March, we announced the Inspire campaign
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Inspire, an initiative led
by WMF’s Community Resources team to generate new ideas to address
Wikimedia's gender gap. From 266 ideas came 42 grant proposals eligible for
consideration. After careful review by a committee of volunteer Wikimedians
and gender-focused experts, 16 projects have been recommended and approved
for funding.

The projects are experimenting with a variety of strategies: organizing
events and leveraging professional communities, institutions and
partnerships to create quality content, researching gaps in both content
and contributors, and testing approaches for training and mentorship to
better support gender diversity on-wiki. Overall, we’re particularly
pleased to see projects looking at gender in multiple ways as they work to
improve Wikipedia’s gender diversity across various contexts, and to be
supporting some returning grantees as well as many new project leaders who
identify as women or allies for increasing gender diversity.

You can also read more about the campaign and each funded project on the
Wikimedia Foundation blog

We hope you'll continue to engage with these projects as they begin work in
coming months and offer your experience and ideas!

Meanwhile, our regularly scheduled grant programs continue :)

A number of ideas and grant proposals from the campaign are still in
development. Over the coming year, we'll continue to encourage people to
make changes based on feedback and our Project and Event Grants
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG and Individual Engagement
Grants https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG programs will be happy
to continue to receive new or adjusted proposals aimed at increasing gender
diversity during regular funding cycles along with all other topics.

A full analysis of the Inspire campaign is in progress, and in coming weeks
we'll be sharing findings from a traffic analysis and a participant survey.
Stay tuned for another update in mid-May on what we learned from the
Inspire experiment, what worked, what didn't, and recommended steps for the
future.

Many thanks to all of you that contributed to this campaign with proposals,
ideas, feedback and suggestions!

Cheers,

The Inspire Team

 Dear all
As you all know in the Wikmedia movement nothing really inspiring and
creative can be done without the volunteers. Their ideas, time and energy
are priceless. That is why Wikimedia Poland has created an award to say
thank you to great people that inspire and coordinate our projects
(expeditions, workshops, editathons, photo contests etc.) and for the
 volunteer of the year.
We invited four people from the outside of the Wikimedia movement - people
representing cultural institutions NGO's and the media - to form a jury
with a task to choose the projects and the volunteer that should be
rewarded. The jury also gave us precious information about how people who
are not Wikimedians see our projects and which they perceive as the most
 interesting and inspiring.

The ProWikimedia 2015 award will be given in 4 categories:
 1. Free content ambassador - in recognition of a project which had major
impact on promoting openness, knowledge of free licenses, and free culture
outside Wikimedia communities or which resulted in resources that were of
great use to projects, institutions and publications outside of the
 WIkimedia movement
 2. Efficient content acquisition - in recognition of a project which
exhibited a high ratio of acquired content quality and quantity in the
 context of financial outlays
 3. Innovation / pioneering character in acquiring free content - in
recognition of a project which showed creativity, innovative approach and
original viewpoint in acquiring free contents for the WIkimedia projects
 4. The volunteer of the year

The award ceremony will take place this Saturday in the library of the
European Solidarity Center - an institution with a mission of
maintaining the heritage and message of the Solidarity movement and
 sharing
the achievements of the peaceful struggle for freedom, justice, democracy
and human rights. And it is a great place to recognize the great effort of
Wikimedia volunteers who change the world by sharing knowledge.

The ProWikimedia project has already (thanks to the outside jury) thought
us a lot about our actions and initiatives and given us precious (and
sometimes surprising) insight. But it's main purpose is to keep our
volunteers inspired, encourage them to start new initiatives and show them
how great job they are doing. I am really excited about this award as I
truly believe that showing gratitude to our volunteers is something really
important. And we need to find new ways to do it.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Departure

2015-09-24 Thread Alex Wang
Garfield,

I have deeply appreciated your guidance, humility, and humor whenever I
have come to you for advice. You respect for our communities and desire to
support them no matter how crazy the situation has been inspiring. You
could easily create and enforce rigid processes and rules, but instead
consider each situation uniquely and think creatively to support our
affiliates and individual volunteers. I really appreciate that level of
commitment. You will be missed.

[Wikimedia-l] Want to join a grants committee?

2016-04-29 Thread Alex Wang
Hello!

The Community Resources team is now recruiting committee members to support
the launch of two new grants programs [1].

The Project Grants Committee will review and advise on projects that
promote new experiments and sustain ideas that work.

   - Program launches July 1, 2016 with an open call for new grant
   proposals.
   - Up to USD 100,000 for projects up to 12 months. Submissions accepted
   quarterly.
   - Interested in joining? Learn more here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Quarterly/Committee/Orientation
   - Submit your candidacy by July 15, 2016 to participate in the first
   round.

The Conference Support Committee will review and advise on large
conferences and events.

   - Program launches July 1, 2016.
   - Submissions accepted monthly.
   - Interested in joining? Learn more here:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Conference/Committee/Orientation
   - Submit your candidacy by June 1, 2016 to participate in the launch.

Why should you serve on a grants committee?

   -

Make a big difference by supporting applicants and grantees that are
doing projects to improve content and increase participation across the
   Wikimedia movement.
   -

Build yours skills and experience by participating in our innovative
   participatory grantmaking programs.
   -

Interact with volunteers from all over the world.

Do you know somebody who you think would be perfect for this role?

   -

We love referrals and want to build diverse committees! Please
   encourage them to join.

Cheers,

Alex

[Wikimedia-l] Announcing Rapid Grants

2016-05-17 Thread Alex Wang
Hello Wikimedians,

We are excited to announce the launch of a new Wikimedia Foundation grants
program, Rapid Grants!

Rapid grants fund Wikimedia community members -- individuals, groups, or
organizations contributing to Wikimedia projects -- to organize projects
throughout the year for up to USD 2,000. Projects can include experiments
or standard needs that don't need broad review to get started. Applications
are reviewed weekly by WMF staff.

Read more about the new program and apply here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid

Questions? Email rapidgra...@wikimedia.org

For more information about next steps and important dates for the grants
program redesign, please visit:

Hi Ido,

Thanks for exploring the new program! Yes, we definitely plan to have the
pages translated. We want to see if there will be any substantial edits to
the content during this first phase before we do a big translation campaign
in August.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Updated dates: Reimagining WMF grants consultation

2016-04-18 Thread Alex Wang
Hi Rupert,

You can see the full Community Resources budget, including the grants
programs here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Resources/2016-17_Annual_Plan#Budget

Note that Rapid Grants are a type of Project Grant and included in that
budget.

Please note that this budget is still under review and may be revised.

Cheers,

Alex

[Wikimedia-l] Open call for Project Grant proposals (Jul 1-Aug 2)

2016-07-01 Thread Alex Wang
Hi everyone,

The Wikimedia Foundation Project Grants program will launch its first open
call on July 1. We will be accepting proposals through August 2nd for new
ideas to improve Wikimedia projects. <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project>.

Funds are available to support individuals, groups and organizations to
implement new experiments and proven ideas, whether focused on building a
new tool or gadget, organizing a better process on your wiki, researching
an important issue, coordinating an editathon series or providing other
support for community-building.

Ideas from the current Inspire Campaign on addressing harassment are very
welcome.

Do you have have a good idea, but would like some feedback before applying?
Put it into the IdeaLab, where volunteers and staff can give you advice and
guidance on how to bring it to life. <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab> Once your idea is ready,
it can be easily migrated into a grant request.

Marti Johnson and I will also be hosting weekly proposals clinics via
Hangouts and IRC for real-time discussions about the Project Grants Open
Call. We’ll answer questions and help you make your proposal better. Dates
and times are as follows:

* Tuesday, July 5 - 16:00 UTC

* Thursday, July 14 - 02:00 UTC

* Wednesday, July 20 - 15:00 UTC

* Friday, July 29 - 02:00 UTC

* Tuesday, August 2 - 01:30 UTC

* Tuesday, August 2 - 16:00 UTC

Links for Hangouts and the IRC channel are available here: <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Events#Upcoming_events>

We are excited to see your grant ideas that will support our community and
make an impact on the future of Wikimedia projects. Put your idea into
motion, and submit your proposal between July 1 and August 2! <
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Apply>

Please feel free to get in touch with me (aw...@wikimedia.org) or Marti
Johnson (mjohn...@wikimedia.org) with questions about getting started with
your project!

Warm regards,

Alex & Marti

[Wikimedia-l] Report on the Gender Gap Inspire Campaign

2017-01-04 Thread Alex Wang
(Apologies for cross-posting)

Hello!

After almost two years, the first Inspire Campaign on gender diversity is
coming to a close.[1] As an initial experiment in proactive grantmaking, we
consider the campaign a success! It engaged over 600 people in addressing
the gender gap, resulting in both quantitative and qualitative shifts:
approximately 13,000 articles were created or improved, the number of women
leading grant-funded projects significantly increased, and our thinking
about gender diversity expanded in both expected and unexpected ways. While
there are still a few grants that will continue into 2017, we believe this
campaign has been a success in bringing attention, diverse thinking and new
progress to the topic of gender diversity within our movement.

Many thanks to the teams that have dedicated their time and effort over
these months!

We have put together a report, focusing on the outcomes of the Inspire
grants that submitted reports by August 2016.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Evaluation/Inspire_
Campaigns/Gender_gap

Our report focuses on the major themes we saw across these 11 grants, and
especially highlights how people participated and contributed in expected
and unexpected ways. For instance, we now know that people participated in
many more ways than just editing; we also know that in addition to article
improvement and creation, multiple approaches were adopted to rectify
content bias and content gaps.

In the long term, once the movement strategy is complete in August 2017,
our team will revisit the topic of gender diversity under the new lens of
the movement’s strategic priorities. By designing new or improved models
for proactive grantmaking, our hope is that Inspire campaigns will continue
to ignite innovative thinking how to address key issues like the gender
diversity within our movement.

Happy reading!

Alex Wang, Marti Johnson, Sati Houston, and Chris Schilling
