Re: [Wikimedia-l] Qualities for the next long-term WMF executive director
> Food for thought: > > http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-best-managers-exhibit-these-7-behaviors-2016-1 I think that is great food for thought for managers of teams, definitely. I'm not sure it applies to managers of managers or executives; only because those positions weren't a part of this investigation. I think you're misinterpreting. The agree/disagree statement was: "Senior leadership at Wikimedia have communicated a vision that motivates me" (7% agree) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2016-01-06/News_and_notes#WMF_staff_morale See also, this quote in glassdoor, quoted in the Signpost as well: "The Executive Director unveils a new strategy every three months or so." So, it's not that people wanted the vision solely from the ED/Management, it's that they wanted a not constantly changing one. This is getting off topic, however. The point is, a vision does not need to come from one person, which you agree with. A good vision comes from many people working together collaboratively. Then sticking with it to see it through. Consistency is needed in an ED. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Why we changed
> Why we’ve changed Lila, This is either the 3rd (or 4th?) semi-conflicting grand statement of your overall thinking for the WMF that you have shared. If it’s not that, it reads like an explanation for how you have been thinking about the WMF since you started. If the latter, why have we (staff and the community) not been told this for 661 days? Or, in case I missed it, please do let me know where you shared this previously. The best way to get people on board with your thinking is by sharing your thinking in the first place. Normally, the way to measure such morale (along with other things) is via a survey to measure employee engagement [0]. You can see past engagement surveys on metawiki [1]. You should do this, I will do that." Asaf's comment disagrees with this point. I can confirm that with myself as well. James never promised me anything specific was going to happen and never made a recommendation on what I should do. Being pedantic: that doesn't mean that all wordpress.com hosted blogs through different domains (eg: blog.wikimedia.org can point to a wordpress.com IP, which the blog really lives) are blocked. I can't think of one off the top of my head that is in that category (they don't usually advertise that they're wordpress.com-hosted) to test/suggest. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [Wikimania-l] git.wikimedia.org dead due to wikimania ; )
A quick update I just sent to wikitech-l (where this conversation should be happening): http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2013-August/071171.html Full text below: As you all are aware, git.wikimedia.org (powered by GitBlit) has been unstable. The root cause is basically that there is insufficient caching mechanisms in place exacerbated by a lack of robust rules for web indexers (Google, Bing, etc). Currently, the solution is to disallow all indexers from indexing git.wikimedia.org via the robots.txt file (https://git.wikimedia.org/robots.txt). We hope to open up indexing in a more controlled fashion soon. For now, git.wikimedia.org should be stable for everyday use. You can follow along with the caching developments on bug 49371: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49371 Thanks to Chad and Ariel, especially, who have been working to make sure this is resolved quickly and permanently. [Wikimedia-l] SUL (Single User Login) to be enabled on all wikis on Wednesday July 17th
On Wednesday July 17th we will be enabling a new centralized login service to make the login experience for users more streamlined. What do this mean for you? When you log in to any Wikimedia project wiki, you will be actually logged into a central domain (login.wikimedia.org), which will in turn log you into all of the other wikis as needed. Additionally, there will now no longer be the "Login Success" page, but instead you will be automatically redirected to the page you came from. You can see the full rollout plan for this here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Auth_systems/SUL2#Rollout_Plan Please let me know if you have any questions.
