Re: [Wikimedia-l] Info: [Chapters Association] Next steps from the WCA coordination weekend // 16-17 Feb
It was a pleasure to host you all and glad you made progress. Will pass your thanks on to Richard Nevell. Jon Davies CEO UK Chapter. PS Hope you were all warm enough. On 18 February 2013 18:38, Fae fae...@gmail.com wrote: Dear fellow committed Wikimedians and Chapter enthusiasts, Last weekend a number of Wikimedia Chapters Association Council members, two trustees from the WMF board and some welcome guests, worked together to review in detail the current progress of the association and feedback given by the WMF board.[1][2] A total of nine Council members took part with several being able to join using video conferencing and etherpad. There were a number of firm recommendations, along with a series of immediate actions. The meeting minutes will be issued later this week and everyone can preview all the notes taken during the meeting.[3][4] The meeting was fully open and the Council will continue to use open public communication channels, in preference to closed lists or meetings, recognizing recent community feedback on how best to meet our shared values of openness and transparency. As the Council chair, I can summarize these points as follows, and will be happy to refine and discuss these with an open dialogue on meta[4]: 1) A small set of action teams have been agreed with a focus on external deliverables including chapter peer reviews, providing advice and analysing chapter practices. The time-frame is *three months* for key deliverables and all are expected to be part of the Milan conference in April.[3][6] 2) The recruitment of a Secretary General is parked until such a time as the council is confident of securing a budget and there is a strong consensus on the immediate necessity of such a role or its equivalent. Legally incorporating the Association will also be similarly parked, as the driving factor would have been the need to employ staff. 3) The previously planned elections for Wikimedia Chapters Association Council Chair will be brought forward one month, to starting this week. A separate note/email will explain the process of one week calling for nomination statements, questions and a similar time for the council vote. Thank you to those who have engaged already with feedback and those that were available to take part in the meeting last weekend. For those Council members and interested Wikimedians who were unable to take part, I welcome your feedback on this pragmatic way forward as early as possible, and I encourage you to lend a hand with the action teams, as they will benefit your chapter directly. A special thanks to Wikimedia UK for offering to host the London meeting, including Richard Nevell's support with practical logistics all weekend, including much needed coffee and sandwiches. I look forward to seeing many Chapters helping the action teams and future activities of the Association, with suggestions and practical offers of staff support. :-) Links 1. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Chapters_Association#WMF_Board_letter_regarding_the_Chapters_Association 2. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Meetings/2013-07/Questionnaire 3. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Meetings/2013-07 4. http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/ep/pad/view/WCA/latest 5. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Chapters_Association 6. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2013 Thank you, Fae -- Ashley Van Haeften (Fae) fae...@gmail.com Chapters Association Council Chair http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WCA Guide to email tags: http://j.mp/mfae ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l -- *Jon Davies - Chief Executive Wikimedia UK*. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Question: How much does administration in Chapters cost the Wikimedia movement?

To: wikimedia-l-ow...@lists.wikimedia.org Hi Fae, Great question Fae. For a fundraising charity a breakdown in program, fundraising and administrative cost is natural, and in compliance with accountanting standards. As far as I know WMF reports according to FAS 117, see http://www.fasb.org/cs/BlobServer?blobcol=urldatablobtable=MungoBlobsblobkey=idblobwhere=1175820923228blobheader=application%2Fpdf In the UK the standard would be SORP. Wikimedia Nederland adopted Richtlijn 650 which is mandatory for getting a certificate from CBF, see http://www.rjnet.nl/Documents/Uitingen%202011/034578_RJ-Uiting%202011-1%20dd%2031-01-11.pdf and http://www.cbf.nl/CBF-Beoordelingen/criteria-keur.php. The accounting standards give guidelines about what can be allocated to program costs, what should be included in fundraising cost and what are administrative cost. FDC entities are required to produce audited financial statements. The external auditor will review allocation of cost and transparency of explanatory notes. International charity guideline is to have program:fundraising:administrative cost ratios according to 75:10:15, noting the 10 and 15 are maximums. A source for these ratios is http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.viewcpid=48 Costs of evaluating impact of programs. Would you include those cost in administrative costs? Could costs of impact evaluations be part of program cost. If not, why not? If yes, what is your rationale? Re: [Wikimedia-l] Effectiveness of meetings (Was: Affcom ...)
I have sat through so many meetings that wasted time in various degrees that I thought of a football referee system where people could hold us yellow or red cards if they thought the meeting should be 'warned' or 'sent off'. More than two cards and the meeting gets abandoned or sorts itself out. On 14 May 2013 18:16, Mathias Damour mathias.dam...@laposte.net wrote: Le 14/05/2013 13:39, Lodewijk a écrit : (...) If not, you can reduce the costs, increase the outcomes (different setup) or cancel all together. 2013/5/14 Lodewijk lodew...@effeietsanders.org The second relevant question is, in my opinion, whether the WMF travel policy is good, proportional etc. This policy has mostly received criticism from two sides - some think it is too elaborate, and WMF should get 'less luxury' (again fair discussion, but we should then focus on the whole question) - another criticism is that it should be equalized for all Wikimedia-sponsored trips, including individual engagement grants, trips to the chapters meeting etc. When this question was brought up last time, I believe it was Sue who mentioned that this would simply result in much less travel and participation. Again, a fair question. this would simply result in much less travel !!! Well, less travel, not only cost control, could be a justifiable objective itself. I mean that to convert the donations to Wikimedia into burning vast amounts of under-taxed kerosene is definitely not an environmentally friendly and responsible way to run the Wikimedia movement. The discussions that followed when it became clear that WMFR was about to withdraw made it obvious to both of us that our resources are better spent elsewhere: * Support for the WCA within Chapters is very small. * Chapters withdrew from the WCA long time ago by non-participation. * The WCA is expected to do big things with no resources. * It is virtually impossible to get rid of the structural debates. Still, I firmly believe we need to continue the dialogue. There are some projects (started by the WCA and others) that are very promising if they get the attention they deserve. As a consequence, I will focus on working on Chapter collaboration and the continuation of programmes. Here's an (incomplete) list: * Chapters Exchange [1] as a place of coordination for common projects. * Boards Training [2] as a way of enabling good organisational work. * Peer reviews [3] for learning from each other. * Chapters Manual [4] as a sustainable documentation of the way Wikimedia organisations work. * Journal on Meta [5] for staying up to date. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Who will host Wikimedia Conference 2014? Bidding process is open!
I think there is an assumption that it is needed and indeed welcomed. From my two experiences it has been very valuable and,I would argue, in an organisation like ours essential for developing good working relationships and practices. If you measure success that way, it will be a 100% success. Balázs 2013/9/18 Asaf Bartov abar...@wikimedia.org Balasz, you miss the point: certainly, conferences _can_ be organized in any major city. That's not what this conversation is trying to establish. We are trying to get the deafeningly-silent majority of chapter/ThOrg board members on this list to _participate_ in determining the location, and later the program, of next year's WMCON. If the level of interest expressed so far is a fair reflection of the actual level of interest, and given WMDE has expressed interest in hosting, we could default to that and forego this whole bid process. The point of the bid was to accommodate a perceived interest in sharing the burden (and joys) of hosting; if that perception is incorrect, we don't need this process. So which is it, dear colleagues? Is everyone else just happy for Someonetm to handle this? Is everyone else just waiting for the invitation to the actual event, and the program put together by others? A. We received a total of four bids from Germany, India, Italy and Sweden. In selecting the Berlin location we have taken into consideration the experience and capacity of the team; the travel time and cost for attendees; the cost of hosting the conference; and the facilities and room configuration of the proposed venues. Throughout our deliberations we kept an open mind towards having the conference in a new location/country, and we have appreciated the compact solutions offered by having all participants close to each other or staying at the same lodging; however, we felt that the Berlin bid provides – by a small margin – the best combination of price, distance and experience this year. We thank all the organisations that have entered a bid for their time and effort and we hope that even if they were not selected this year, they can make use of the experience when they organise other meetings that will further the Wikimedia mission. In closing, we would like to thank all Wikimedia organisations for placing their trust in this process and committee, which was an interesting experience for all of us. In the hope that the Wikimedia organisations keep the hosting choice an open process, we would like to propose a number of potential process improvements[1], and we would invite all the bidders and other interested parties to provide their own feedback. The Requests for Proposals (RfP) is being written right now[1], and will be coming out soon, but in this e-mail we would like to invite volunteers to serve on the selection jury[2]. The jury will select the winning bid based on published criteria, reviewing the bids from January onwards until the final selection is made in April 2014. This is roughly 30-40 hours' work, and is key to us making Wikimania a strong, healthy community conference that we all can enjoy. The Wikimania Committee will select a jury that is a balanced representation of the community, from a diverse range of backgrounds, sexes, languages, cultures and regions of the world. The main criteria are as follows: * You want to help make Wikimania as great a celebration of the community as we can make it; * You can represent some of the Wikimedia community's varied projects and activities; * You have some experience of community events, meetings, conferences, or want to learn; * You have some free time during the selection period, especially late March and early April; and * You are not closely involved in any bid (it's a conflict of interest). If you would like to serve on the jury, please e-mail Florence Devouard (off-list) [[Wikipedia:User:Anthere]] at fdevouard @ wikimedia.org by 12 November. We will announce the jury in two weeks' time. Please help us by translating this message and passing it on to your wiki's community for those that don't read these mailing lists. This decision was presented to the Board of the chapter past Saturday and it was accepted. For personal and professional reasons, I've decided to return to my country, Chile, in the following weeks and start a new stage of my life. Two years ago, I was presented with the opportunity of living in Argentina and working for one of my passions. This was a big challenge for me: I had to leave my country and my family and work in a foreign country. These last 18 months have been a unique experience and I've learnt a lot, becoming a better professional and a more mature person. However, at the same time I feel that I need to move on and continue with new projects and challenges. Certainly, this has not been an easy decision for me, because I'm very fond of this work, the people that have participated in our activities and the projects we worked on and we are still working on. I leave the Association in a very different position than when I took office. We have several ongoing projects and we regularized all the delayed paperwork. We became the first organization from a developing country to get an Annual Plan Grant via FDC and have been one of the best-graded chapters in both processes. We are now a reliable and serious organization, continuing a process of professionalization that can improve our programs, making them more efficient and more effective. Clearly, this has not been only due to my work, which is why I thank the Board of the Chapter that helped me in everything and to María Cruz, which has been a great colleague these months. My main interest is that Wikimedia Argentina continues to grow, which is why we have decided that my departure occurs at the end of March. This will allow us to work calmly to ensure the continuity of the ongoing projects of Wikimedia Argentina and the transfer of knowledge once the new Executive Director takes office. In any case, I will continue to participate as a member and Wikimedia volunteer, once this period expires. By request of our Board, I will also attend the next Wikimedia Conference, so I will be able to transmit the experiences of Wikimedia Argentina in the last year. I appreciate the trust placed in me by the Board and all the members of Wikimedia Argentina and their support all these months. I'm sure they will continue the great work we have done lately. Between many WMNL members and me, there were two grades of separation: coming from the humanities, my geekiness differs a little from the average Wikipedianess; having the German Wikipedia as my home wiki, I was never a very active or 'true' part of the Dutch editing community. And when I quoted in my speeches from medieval quests or Prussian literary realism, I received therefore some strange looks from some members. But I remain firmly convinced that good governance and respect have no nationality. Indeed, stroopwafels do have, and so I adopted the Dutch custom to bring them with me to Wikimedian meetings abroad. Wikimedia Nederland has experienced and overcome a difficult period of transition. Office space and employees, more members including more members without Wikipedia background, more activities, more money, more responsibility; more need for an association to mature and focus on what is necessary (and not always easy, cool or fun). We achieved that as a collective, slower than previously expected, but with the appropriate pride and good feelings about the future. For the record we have people going for four reasons: - CEO and Chair as standard - Two staff and one trustee who are invited to do presentations on areas of strength in the chapter. - Two trustees (we are guessing KR might actually be a misnamed Kate West) who will be using this as part of their induction as trustees - a great chance to meet other people and learn about the community. - Everyone can promote Wikimania London and learn about people's ideas and expectations. I think this is a sensible use of our resources, (flights to Berlin are cheaper than many train journeys to UK cities), supports our learning and helps share our knowledge and understanding with other chapters. And on a final point we will certainly not be going round in a sort of WMUK gang trying to overwhelm small chapters - quite the opposite and I think we have a good record at WMUK of supporting others. *Regards, Jon Davies* *CEO Wikimedia UK.* On 31 March 2014 15:43, Russavia russavia.wikipe...@gmail.com wrote: Gerard, et al On Mon, Mar 31, 2014 at 9:59 PM, Gerard Meijssen gerard.meijs...@gmail.comwrote: My point is very much that it is for the chapter to decide if they spend their money wisely. The movement, as you all like to refer to it, has a tendency to waste money on frivolous things such as travel and accommodation, as demonstrated last year by http://twkozlowski.net/how-40k-dollars-turned-to-petty-cash/and http://twkozlowski.net/saving-by-spending-according-to-affcom/ The appropriate time to question such spending is BEFORE the funds is committed and spent. Frans Grijzenhout 2014-05-01 20:15 GMT+02:00 Jan-Bart de Vreede jdevre...@wikimedia.org: Dear fellow community members, On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees I am delighted to announce that the new Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation will be Lila Tretikov. Lila is a widely respected Bay Area technology leader, most recently with SugarCRM. As many of you know, about a year ago Sue Gardner announced she planned to step down as our ED. As we launched the search for her successor, we spent some time working through the most critical requirements for the role. We decided the new ED should be someone with a product/engineering background, ideally in an open-source or other online community context. We wanted someone experienced with organisations that were growing, who'd managed staff and budgets comparable to ours, and who had experience creating continuous delivery of technology improvements in an agile context. We wanted a person who is oriented towards collaboration, transparency and openness, with some experience with complex stakeholder environments, and with an international orientation. We knew we needed someone with courage and strong personal integrity, who wouldn't be intimidated by attempts to censor the projects. Lila is precisely what we set out to find. Lila was born in the Soviet Union and moved to the United States alone, as a teenager. She's been working for technology companies, primarily in open source, in the Bay Area for the past 15 years. In 1999 she started her career at Sun Microsystems. Shortly afterwards she founded GrokDigital, a technology and design company. She spent three years as senior director of development at Telespree, a company that provides cloud-based wireless data services for mobile carriers. For the past eight years, she was at SugarCRM, where she held positions of increasing responsibility as the organization grew, including being in charge of internal IT, marketing, customer support and professional services, engineering, and product development. She has a stellar reputation as a leader who is highly skilled, collaborative, open, passionate and curious. We think Lila will be a terrific fit for the ED role. The Transition Team (Phoebe, Alice, Kat, Sue, Erik, Geoff, Gayle and I) voted unanimously to recommend her to the Board, and the Board voted unanimously to accept the recommendation. She strikes all of us as smart, brave and unpretentious, and we believe she has the skills the WMF needs. Lila is going to spend the next few weeks in learning-and-listening mode, and will take over the ED position from Sue at the end of the month. Her first priority will be to immerse herself in deepening her understanding of the Wikimedia projects. I want to close this announcement by saying a heartfelt and deeply appreciative thanks to Sue, who has been the Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation for the past seven years. When the Board and I hired Sue in 2007, we were just a chaotic little non-profit in small-town Florida, with a tiny staff and not much money. Over the past seven years, Sue's leadership has built the Foundation into an effective, well-funded and well-managed organisation, with integrity and a clear sense of purpose, and her steady and committed presence throughout the search process was integral in helping us come to this excellent result. We will be forever grateful for her leadership and vision, and I hope we can continue to rely on her support in the months and years ahead. In June Sue will move into a new role as a special advisor to me and Lila. She'll also take a well-earned holiday, and maybe even a bit of a wiki-break, before beginning to think about what she's going to do next. Many of us will get a chance to see her in London, at Wikimania, in August. The Wikimedia Foundation is delighted to have reached such a successful outcome to the search. Before I proceed with the application (give suggestion to WMRS Board), I want your input. In reality, I don't know that any zoo is perfect in relation to the treatment of animals. In reality, it's likely impossible to check that, as well as animal rights are not that well protected in Serbia like the case is in, let's say, in the most of EU countries. So, I am interested in prevalent opinion. What's more important to us: free knowledge or not cooperating with an institution which likely has issues with the treatment of animals -- the question is just about the level. ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/guidelineswikimedi...@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe -- *Jon Davies - Chief Executive Wikimedia UK*. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cost of Wikimedia Conference 2014
There is no intention to hide the costs to the chapter of the Chapter's involvement in the Wikiconference Berlin, but it is not a simple calculation. One person was asking for trustee expenses, others are asking how much we (WMUK) spent on the entire conference (including staff, volunteers, speakers, trustees etc). I hope to clarify this here. So for trustee expenses: not all of the board went as trustees, as two (at least) were invited as speakers - reporting that as a trustee cost wouldn't be accurate. As to staff – I attended as the Chief Executive, but the other two staff were also invited speakers. One of the staff had some costs paid by the Foundation. As to the cost mine was probably on the low end, as I booked my flight early and always use public transport or bicycles, but from recollection (and I have to sign off all trustee expenses) the total cost to the chapter is close to £2600. My expenses are here https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Expenses_2014-2015 and give a good baseline. The trustees are discussing how best to itemise expenses in a way that ensures an appropriate level of transparency at the board meeting this Saturday. I do not know why anyone would call the conference a 'junket', that needs a citation I'd think, but it was, as I have explained before in detail, a productive working three days at a reasonable cost to the chapter. If you think it was a junket then the whole conference could be judged a waste of money and the previous ones as well - and they aren't. The reality is that these are important working conferences where chapters and other organisations meet to discuss best practice. Jon Davies. [Wikimedia-l] Two special workshops before Wikimania.
Hello fellow Wikimedians, *Two special events just before Wikimania aimed at spreading good practice.* *Governance workshop 7th of August.* Based on the successful board training workshop held in March this year, we are organising another such workshop, this time coinciding with Wikimania here in London. This workshop will be based on the successful March training workshop, with largely the same material covered. It's intended for people who are (or will shortly be) board members of Chapters or Thematic Organisations. This session is planned for 7 August 2014, i.e. as a pre-meeting to Wikimania. For more details, including a provisional agenda and registration link, please go to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Boards_training_workshop_August_2014. Places are strictly limited, on a first come first served basis. *Train the Trainers - two day course. 4th and 5th of August* We are also hosting an international version of our successful 'Train the trainers' workshop which we've advertised to you previously. The application deadline for a place there is Sunday 15 June. More information and registration is at https://donate.wikimedia.org.uk/civicrm/event/info?id=68reset=1. Don't miss out on a place, especially if you have previously indicated an interest in attending but have not yet registered. It's a simple and basically fair question - how much did the WMUK spend on the Wikimedia Conference 2014? Whether a particular expense can be classified as staff, or trustee, or speaker, or etc. is interesting but not crucial to answering the question. Given the strained relationship with Ashley I can understand the reluctance to respond, but I don't think there is a strong moral basis for not providing the round total number. ~Nathan ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list, guidelines at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailing_lists/Guidelines Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe -- *Jon Davies - Chief Executive Wikimedia UK*. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Please be considerate of everyone's time.
At WMUK we are often approached by people wanting to improve content in an area. We can offer edit training and support for events where people can come together and improve or create pages. Last week our editathon run by volunteer Doug Taylor with Barclays was one such success: *'There were 472 “saves” and 378 articles edited or created across 18 different language Wikipedias'.* Have a look at the blog https://blog.wikimedia.org.uk/2014/06/a-global-editathon-teaching-wikipedia-to-barclays/ Jon Davies, On 17 June 2014 07:14, edward edw...@logicmuseum.com wrote: On 17/06/2014 00:28, Kevin Gorman wrote: Hi Ed - I'm not sure what your area of specialty is offhand, This http://cuapress.cua.edu/res/docs/Fall-2014-Catalog.pdf#page=17 will be published in September this year, about the early philosophy of the medieval theologian Duns Scotus. Philosophy generally is an area that is very poorly covered on Wikipedia. There is the excellent Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy http://plato.stanford.edu/contents.html but that is not written for the general reader and even specialists in one area might have problems with articles in another area http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/modeltheory-fo . Re: [Wikimedia-l] Chapters and GLAM tooling
Thanks Erik, This is certainly something we are keen to work on. I was talking to Magnus just last night and of course our experience with Europeana has taught us a lot )I hope we have fully learnt the messages!). We are undertaking a scoping review of our Development plans at the moment and this will be part of the consideration. Jon On 26 June 2014 04:54, Erik Moeller e...@wikimedia.org wrote: Hi folks, At the Zurich Hackathon, I met with a couple of folks from WM-CH who were interested in talking about ways that chapters can get involved in engineering/product development, similar to WM-DE's work on Wikidata. My recommendation to them was to consider working on GLAM-related tooling. This includes helping improve some of the reporting tools currently running in Labs (primarily developed by the illustrious and wonderful Magnus Manske in his spare time), but also meeting other requirements identified by the GLAM community [1] and potentially helping with the development of more complex MediaWiki-integrated tools like the GLAMWiki-Toolset. There's work that only WMF is well positioned to do (like feeding all media view data into Hadoop and providing generalized reports and APIs), but a lot of work in the aforementioned categories could be done by any chapter and could easily be scaled up from 1 to 2 to 3 FTEs and beyond as warranted. That's because a lot of the tools are separate from MediaWiki, so code review and integration requirements are lower, and it's easier for technically proficient folks to help. In short, I think this could provide a nice on-ramp for a chapter or chapters to support the work of volunteers in the cultural sector with appropriate technology. This availability of appropriate technology is clearly increasingly a distinguishing factor for Wikimedia relative to more commercial offerings in its appeal to the cultural sector. At the same time, WMF itself doesn't currently prioritize work with the cultural sector very highly, which I think is appropriate given all the other problems we have to solve. So if this kind of work has to compete for attention with much more basic improvements to say the uploading pipeline or the editing tools, it's going to lose. Therefore I think having a cultural tooling team or teams in the larger movement would be appropriate. I've not heard back from WM-CH yet on this, but I also don't think it's an exclusive suggestion, so wanted to put the idea in people's heads in case other organizations in the movement want to help with it. I do want WMF to solve the larger infrastructure problems, but the more specialized tooling is likely _not_ going to be high on our agenda anytime soon. Re: [Wikimedia-l] On historical event / WMRS Microgrants 2014
Great work! On 16 July 2014 16:31, Milos Rancic mill...@gmail.com wrote: I am finally able to share with you the biggest benefit of WMRS Microgrants projects for this year. It's about cooperation with one very old institution, and it was necessary to wait for their formal letter. But first about the side effects of the Microgrants project... When you are going outside and tell people that you are willing to support their projects, it could lead into interesting outcomes. It is important to understand possibilities which could be opened and catch them. We got one interesting proposal. It was about a long term project of making photos of one person. The project was very interesting, but it turned out that it's not suitable to be supported by Wikimedia, as well as the amount of needed money is so small, that I am able to fund it personally. However, that was not the end. That guy, an amateur photographer (with professional skills) is actually the top Serbian lector. He proofread the Orthography of Serbian language. He is also a lexicographer, working in Matica srpska [1]. So, we met in my office. While drinking some alcohol, besides his own project, we were talking about the state of Serbian lexicography and culture in general. We were talking about Matica srpska, as well; about present financial state of the institution, which has money for salaries and the most important projects, but doesn't have for a number of projects. I had bold ideas, of course, but I was quite skeptical about rational possibility of cooperation between WMRS and Matica srpska. However, he convinced me that the president of MS is likely willing to cooperate and that we should talk about that. So he told me that he'll arrange the meeting with the president and that we should talk about that. Few weeks later I led WMRS delegation (our ED Mile and our program manager Ivana were in the delegation) to the initial talks with MS. I think we were talking two hours. And I am quite confident to tell you that on June 20th, 2014 happened one historical event, not just for Wikimedia Serbia, but also for Serbian culture and free knowledge. I wasn't able to talk about this till today, when we got formal letter from MS, which summarize our meeting and emphases their commitment to accessibility of knowledge to as much people as it's possible. If you are in Slavic culture in general, you should know what Matica srpska is. As the most of you are not, here is the story in short... MS is the oldest cultural and scientific institution in Serbia. They are the main lexicographical and encyclopedistic institution in Serbia. It isn't easily comparable with large cultures, but, basically, if we don't count independent institutions, 90% of dictionaries and the most important encyclopedias have been created inside of MS or with MS as the leader of the project. We share one important trait with the institutions like MS is. It's about long term goals. We want to start cooperation and develop it. So, we are starting with cooperation slowly. During the next year our goal is to liberate two dictionaries. One is ornithological, the other one covers dialects of Vojvodina. That's just the beginning, of course. Their editions are the main dictionaries of Serbian language and we'll discuss the next year about the steps toward liberating them. They are also in charge for creation of national encyclopedia, but it has its own Board and during the next months we should start talking with the Board, as well. The significance of this cooperation for Wikimedia is that we are at the beginning of the first close relations with one main national cultural institution, which focus is creating dictionaries and encyclopedias. They share our goals, as well as they want to cooperate with us. And it's not just about liberating content because we will help it financially. It's their commitment, as well. They want to share their content on Internet. With our (technological, licensing etc.) help, they will become the institution which shares their content by default, no matter if we are involved or not. I know that this story is not applicable in many cases. It's not rational to expect that the University of Oxford would do the same. However, I am sure that this story *is* applicable in many cultures of the similar size, like Serbian is. It is also important that the visibility of Wikimedia organizations all over the world is very important. You could get something very valuable if you show that you are friendly. I dunno, Marc. There are different expectations about signature, depending on the target group. We still have people being freaked out that article histories contain their username or IP (a form of automatic signature), so I'm not convinced that there's an expectation on the part of new users that anything they write anywhere will automatically be signed. Even if I agreed with that (and I do not, edit conflicts in articles are much rarer than on talk pages - and usually easier to sort out), that's not a *good* thing! Participating in discussion should be much, *much* easier than editing articles: encouraging newbies to seek help and participate in the community *before* diving in anything but trivial article edits would be an immensely powerful retention tool! Jessie has been an extraordinary and integral part of WMF for the last four years, and demonstrated her initiative, insight and leadership in each of the positions she’s ably held here. For many of you, you may remember Jessie's first role was part of the consultant team working on the 5 year strategy. Most recently and importantly, she’s led the Learning and Evaluation team in the past year to do some significant baseline research and impact analyses of our grants and programs across the movement. This is work that lays the foundation for a great deal of our strategic vision and direction going forward. Thank you so much, Jessie, for all your strategic leadership, but even more: thank you for who you are, and the heart you’ve always brought to your team, WMF and the communities we support. We are hoping that Jessie will rejoin us when she’s completed this brilliant opportunity at IDEO (she’s one of four chosen from over 450 applicants!). However, the work we are doing with all of you on impact and strategic outcomes for the movement is urgent and will need to be ramped up even further over this year. We will be opening up this position to lead the LE team soon, and keep you posted on it. Jessie, thank you again for all your manifold contributions. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2014 expenses
Fae, In retrospect having a big box for the expenses claims was not the best idea and that was one reason we did an email chase up a while back. I am sure your claim will be dealt with properly and quickly. Please get it to us ASAP. Jon On 29 September 2014 13:58, Fæ fae...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks Jon, I put my claim in to the box with all other expenses forms from volunteers in the Wikimania control room, I think on the day before the UK chapter AGM. It would be a remarkable coincidence if the only claim the chapter has lost, was also from the only volunteer in the history of Wikimedia UK who has had their membership payment rejected by you. I'll reconstruct my claim and email it in. As my original claim of £14 was a friendly under-estimate of my travel costs, I expect this version will be larger. [Wikimedia-l] Au Revoir from WMUK CEO
With some sadness I have to tell you that I will be leaving Wikimedia UK, as an employee, if not as a volunteer, at the end of the year. I have achieved what I set out to do and leave WMUK in a good state. I now need to look for new challenges. I was the first chief executive and it has been an amazing three years watching the chapter grow and develop. It has not always been smooth sailing but we have come through it together in good shape. Wikimania proved how professional we had become and the positive feedback from the participants makes all the work we put in worthwhile. My heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community, particularly the volunteers who are at the heart of all we do, my great colleagues at the Foundation and the loyal and hardworking staff at WMUK who have supported me so ably and with such good humour over the years. My best wishes go to my successor in all they seek to achieve. Cyhoeddiad gan Jon Gyda pheth tristwch rwy'n eich hysbysu y byddaf yn gadael Wikimedia UK, fel cyflogai, os nad fel gwirfoddolwr, ar ddiwedd y flwyddyn. Dw i wedi cyflawni'r hyn roeddwn wedi'i obeithio a dw i'n gadael WMUK ar delerau da. Edrychaf ymlaen rwan am sialensau newydd. Fi oedd y Prif Weithredwr cyntaf ac mae'r dair blynedd diwethaf wedi bod yn hollol anhygoel, wrth i mi weld y siaptr yn tyfu a datblygu. Doedd y daith bob amser ddim yn llyfn, ond daethom drwyddi'n y diwedd yn ddianaf! Profodd Wikimania inni aeddfedu mewn modd proffesiynol a chafwyd adborth adeiladol gan y cyfranwyr oedd yn gwneud yr holl waith yn bleser. Carwn ddiolch o waelod fy ngalon i bawb o fewn ein cymuned, yn enwedig y gwirfoddolwyr sy'n sylfaen i'n gwaith, fy nghydweithwyr bendigedig yn Sylfaen Wikimedia a'r staff sydd wedi bod mor driw i mi, wedi fy nghefnogi mor effeithiol ac wedi gweithio mor arbennig o galed dros y blynyddoedd a hynny gyda hiwmor iach. Dymunaf pob llwyddiant i f'olynydd ym mhopeth y ceisiant ei gyflawni. Jon. -- *Jon Davies - Chief Executive Wikimedia UK*.
