Re: [Wikimedia-l] [strategy process] Fwd: I decided to leave the working group

2019-04-23 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Hi,

   1. Everyone keeps on mentioning the word " money". How much was spent on
the strategy thus far by WMF here? I keep on searching for this information
   I can't find it.
   2. I totally agree with Anders Warnnersten
   3. I believe Itzik you are doing it the right way, this is the right
platform and you don't have to apologise for voicing your opinion, it's
what you feel and the TRUTH, in fact I believe this conversation itself
should form part of the Strategy and the WMF need to think about and
address these issues you are raising honestly.
   4. I hear what you are saying Itzik regarding criticising the way WMF
are going about implementing the strategy movement 2030, but I don't hear
what you suggest WMF or we as the Wikimedia community should do to
correctly go about doing or implementing the strategy the right way. You
are saying " There are so many ways in between that can combine the good in
both ways." I want to hear about those* many ways*.
   5. Just to be clear I'm not taking WMF side or Itzik side. I agree with
Itzik and think Paulo Santos Perneta made some valid points as well, my
question is can we remedy what Itzik has pointed out, how do we move
forward as a movement and actually reach a place where we totally agree
that what will come out of this strategy process truly represents what
everyone feels and where we want to go.

Regards,
Bobby Shabangu

[Wikimedia-l] WikiIndaba conference announcement

2019-07-17 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Dear all,

We would like to inform you that after long deliberations between the
Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and the WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom)
we have reached an agreement that the suitable dates to host the WikiIndaba
conference 2019 in Abuja, Nigeria will be from 8 - 10 November.

We know that this news will disappoint many of you, who were gearing up for
the meeting. Unfortunately, operational difficulties created some delays.
We have discussed this with the staff of the WMF, and all agree that a
postponement will give us some extra time to ensure that a quality event is
planned for all. WikiIndaba conference is a key pillar in the Wikimedia
movement strategic direction, and an important platform for the African
Wikimedia community.

WISCom and the WMF continue to support Wikimedia Nigeria as the host and
venue for the conference.

We greatly appreciate your support and understanding, and we hope to see
you at WikiIndaba!

Kind regards,

Bobby Shabangu

[Wikimedia-l] WikiIndaba 2021 Conference Announcement

2020-06-01 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Dear Wikimedians,

We trust you are keeping safe during this global state of flux.

This email is to affirm that WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom)
continues to be committed to support the Wikimedia User Group in Uganda in
its bid to organise and host WikiIndaba Conference 2021. We were working
closely with the local organising committee and Wikimedia Foundation to
organise the event before the suspension of all in-person Wikimedia events,
and we continue to do so in order to ensure we have a memorable and
impactful conference when everything returns back to normalcy.

Seeing that we now have more time to plan for the programme, scholarships
and other logistics, we ask that you take advantage of the available time
to think deeply about the value that your participation can add to the
conference. We hope that from now till the time of the call for
participation you will think about important questions that will help us
structure the programme to suit your needs, opportunities that the
conference can bring to your community and concerns that need broader
consensus and support from the larger community.

We will announce further developments as they unfold and we look forward to
working with you all in the future to make Wiki Indaba a good place for
Africans and the diaspora to connect on topics of interest and action.

Best regards,

WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom)

Dear all,

The Ugandan local organising committee for WikiIndaba conference would like
you to take a few minutes of your time to fill the survey below to enable
them to design the program for the conference.

If you can fill by this Friday end of day it would be very helpful.

[Wikimedia-l] [African Wikimedians] WikiIndaba Conference 2022

2022-05-16 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Dear Friends,

On behalf of the WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba_Steering_Committee>), I would
like to announce that the next WikiIndaba Conference
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba> for 2022 will be organised by
Wikimedia Usergroup Rwanda. The conference will take place between 4 and 6
November 2022 in a hybrid format where participants will attend online and
in person in Kigali, Rwanda.

This comes after an invitation to bid was sent to all African affiliates by
WISCom early in April, and several good and deserving candidates responded.
A rigorous selection process then followed which considered several factors
including candidates’ motivational statements, capacity to host the
conference, bringing the conference to a region where it has not been held
before and if there were national elections planned in the applicant's
country for this year.

More details about scholarships and programme will be provided later.

We look forward to supporting and working with Wikimedia UG Rwanda to
ensure the conference becomes a success.

Best regards,

Bobby Shabangu

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Reflections about Visa situation for Wikimedians

2022-08-16 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Thanks for raising this important issue Anass. We've all been victims of
this problem, and I need to say it's a waste of resources and time for
everyone involved - administration that goes into flight and hotel
reservations for a person who won't come because of a visa. Time consumed
by the ups and downs one needs to do to sort out the visa.

I think we really need to have deep conversations as a movement where we
outline the true advantages of in-person events vs online events.

[Wikimedia-l] Announcement - WikiIndaba Conference Host 2023 and 2024

2023-03-06 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Dear friends,

On behalf of WISCom
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba_Steering_Committee> I'm
pleased to announce that the next WikiIndaba conference will take place in
Agadir, Morocco on 3rd and 4th of November 2023. Following this, the
following year's conference will take place in Cape Town, South Africa on 1st
and 2nd of November 2024.

Going forward, we have adopted a system of selecting two host countries
which will cover two successive years of the conference. This will ease the
burden and save time of having to deliberate in a long selection process
after each conference. It will also give time for the next host to prepare
themselves for the conference.

To ensure a fair regional rotation, we were deliberate with our selection
process. We invited only affiliates from Francophone speaking countries to
express interest in hosting the conference. This was followed by a
selection criterion which looked at several factors including the capacity
to host the conference, if there were elections this year in the bidding
country, capacity of the affiliate as well as motivations why the bidder
wanted to host the conference.

The WikiIndaba conference brings together Wikimedians and open source
enthusiasts from across the African continent and diaspora to share
experiences and learn from each other. We look forward to seeing you at the
next WikiIndaba conference.

Please be on the lookout for a survey from this year’s host in the next
coming weeks, as they finalise their preparations for the conference.

Best regards,

Bobby Shabangu

[Wikimedia-l] Save the Date - Afrika Baraza June Edition

2023-06-13 Thread Bobby Shabangu
English

Dear African Wikimedians,

I’m writing to invite you to the second edition of Afrika Baraza
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Afrika_Baraza>, which is going to take
place on 22 June 2023 at 17:00 UTC.

The word Baraza means “meeting place” in Kiswahili. And as such, Afrika
Baraza brings together experienced Wikipedians and new users once every 3
months to have meaningful conversations on all issues related to Wikimedia
in the African continent. It is a platform that continues the conversation
that took place in WikiIndaba Rwanda 2022
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_conference_2022> and a build up
to conversations that will take place at WikiIndaba Morocco 2023
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_conference_2023>.

In this regard, some of the topics include but are not limited to updates
on Wiki Indaba 2023; scholarships and programme submissions; What is
limiting African Wikimedians from engaging in global movement
discussions,...etc.

Please use this Zoom link <https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/84739608024> to join
the call.

Looking forward to seeing you on the call as we strive to define the
African Agenda.

Kind Regards,
Bobby Shabangu,
On Behalf of Afrika Baraza Organizing Team

<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiIndaba_conference_2023>.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimedia Foundation launches Open the Knowledge Journalism Awards on World Press Freedom Day

2023-05-06 Thread Bobby Shabangu
These are interesting viewpoints indeed.

I think the connection between these awards and Wikipedia (especially in
the African continent) is clearly stated in the article. In fact, if it was
me who was writing this press release I would have started that sentence
with:

   - Most African Wikipedians struggle with adding content on the
English/French Wikipedia because of lack of reliable references, and " *the
awards recognise the essential role journalists play in creating
well-researched articles that volunteer editors use as source materials to
   develop content on Wikipedia*"

Colleagues, you will agree with me that there's no one size fits all
solution to fix our problems. We exist in a dynamic community where
something that was perfectly fine a few years ago may not work today. I
personally participated in the development of the MS2030 but I was also
fully aware that the recommendations of the MS2030 are not a silver bullet
or a formula to solve all our problems in the movement. It is our
collective thinking that by implementing the recommendations, our movement
will be in a better strategic position by year 2030 to address the issues
stated in the MS2030.

Now does that mean we should say NO to a pilot project that the WMF
consulted us to try out help close the knowledge gaps in Africa because
it's not part of the MS2030 which is our silver bullet to solving all our
problems? I don't know you tell me colleagues.

Best regards,
Bobby Shabangu

2023-05-06 Thread Bobby Shabangu
And by the way Andreas, I know you are very detailed oriented. We were
consulted about this pilot in South Africa. I was also ask to bring this up
at WikiIndaba Steering Committee (WISCom
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Indaba_Steering_Committee>) hence you
see winners are going to be announced at the WikiIndaba conference in
Morocco, and results and potential impact of this pilot (including the
language issue) are further going to be discussed there. I see from this
email thread that Derrick and Euphemia were also consulted too, but I see
that only the working group were added there. What I'm sure about is that
there's a whole lot of ground work that went into this. Maybe to inform the
WMF staff to add the list of all Africans who were consulted. (I need to
note that some members of our community may not agree to be published there
now that this issue has come to Wikimedia Mailing List because they
view this platform as a toxic place).

Which brings me to my request which is somewhat linked to this issue.

If you are an admin, steward or sysop in the English, French or Arabic
language Wikipedia, kindly reach out to me. We would like to have as many
admins as possible from these languages at WikiIndaba so that we can learn
from you.

Best,
Bobby Shabangu

[Wikimedia-l] [Agenda pour l'Afrique] Merci pour vos contributions | Thank you!

2024-03-30 Thread Bobby Shabangu
Hi All,

In January, I posted a reminder inviting us to review the draft Africa
Agenda <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Afrika_Baraza/Africa_Agenda> and
provide additional input. Our aim was to ensure wider community
consultation and involvement.

We are extremely pleased with the level of participation we received, and
we have now concluded the phase of collecting input for the draft Agenda.
The final document has been updated on Meta as of Sunday 10 March 2024.

What's Next Now?

We hope to communicate the next steps around implementation in the coming
weeks, our goal is to see some of the key recommendations in the Agenda
acted upon soon. Some tentative timelines to watch out for:

   -

   High-level Stakeholder Engagement/Consultation by 20th April 2024
   -

Execution committee constitution and planning from 20th April - June 2024

On behalf of the Afrika Baraza Working Group and WisCom, I would like to
extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to shaping the
African Agenda. Whether through Meta, Afrika Baraza, WikiIndaba Conference
23, or email, your involvement is invaluable. Thank you for your
contributions!

inestimable. Nous vous remercions de votre contribution !

Cordialement,

Bobby Shabangu
