Re: [Wikimedia-l] "BuzzFeed: Days of Counting Pageviews and Unique Visitors Are Over"

2016-02-21 Thread Ed Erhart
Hi Pine,

A big part of our efforts are to humanize the movement, surface our
content, and reach new audiences—research shows that public awareness of
Wikipedia and what it does is not as high as you'd think in emerging
communities.

The blog has been running in-depth and detailed articles like "News on
Wikipedia: Antonin Scalia and the editor tracking his legacy,"[1] "These
Texans are on a quest to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of their state’s
revolution,"[2] and "Fifteen years ago, Wikipedia was a very different
place: Magnus Manske"[3] to showcase our editors and contributors, along
with their contributions to the movement. We plan to continue this in the
coming months.

Our posts that look at article popularity try to go deeper, examining the
editing behind them. Antonin Scalia does that, as does "Millions read Bowie
biography following sudden death."[4] We highlight featured articles
wherever possible.

We also surface fantastic content from our contributors, such as "Recording
romanticism and filling Wikimedia Commons with 19th-century music"[5] or
"Love is strange: ten weird Valentine’s facts from Wikipedia,"[6] although
I freely admit that our social media platforms can do this far more often
than the blog can.

I'm cc'ing Jeff Elder, Digital Communications Manager, on this email so
that he can talk about his fantastic work on social media. Some of the
comments we get are astounding, and we've started the process of expanding
to new platforms—including Instagram.[7]

Best,

[Wikimedia-l] Live a year in four minutes: Watch #Edit2015, Wikipedia’s year-in-review video

2015-12-15 Thread Ed Erhart
See 2015 in four minutes! Our year-in-review video, #Edit2015 is now live.
A collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation's Victor Grigas and
several volunteer editors, #Edit2015 celebrates the individuals all over
the world who've invested thousands, if not millions, of hours in curating
Wikimedia sites.

Please watch it and share on social media! You can simply paste the YouTube
link into a tweet or Facebook post and share with your friends.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] (no subject)

2015-12-04 Thread Ed Erhart
+1 Marc. Both of us were volunteers for years before starting work at the
WMF, and I'm sure we both have opinions that don't line up with the WMF's
overall vision. Quoting Marc's personal thoughts as representative of the
organization as a whole is not helpful for anyone involved.

@Richard and the moderators, I'm rather not start a new thread to respond
here. Please allow responses to the currently ongoing threads and reject
any *new* (no subject) threads. Thanks.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Quality issues

2015-11-28 Thread Ed Erhart
On the very specific point of knowledge and how it's not always possible to
boil it down to a single quantifiable value, I couldn't agree more. Thank
you, Andreas, for the detailed anecdote displaying that problem, and I'll
be happy to provide more if needed.

Does Wikidata have a way of marking data entries as estimates, or at least
dates as circa (not just unknown)?

[Wikimedia-l] New blog roundup needs your input

2015-10-19 Thread Ed Erhart
Hi all,

As part of ongoing attempts to improve the Wikimedia blog,[1] we're going
to trial a digest/roundup of stories from around the Wikimedia movement. As
I'm not omnipresent, this will require input from you.

Please send any timely and interesting story ideas you have to me via email
or on my talk pages (on meta or en.wp[2]) by this Wednesday, 21 October.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing the Wikimedia Affiliates mailing list

2015-10-19 Thread Ed Erhart
I too question the need for a private mailing list. We should require more
than a just a "consistent request" before we reduce transparency and create
yet another walled garden away from the community.

[Wikimedia-l] #FREEBASSEL: Free culture advocate who built 3D renderings of Palmyra missing in Syria

2015-10-08 Thread Ed Erhart
Hi all,

We've just published "#FREEBASSEL: Free culture advocate who built 3D
renderings of Palmyra missing in Syria
<http://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/10/08/bassel-missing-syria/>" to the
Wikimedia blog.

In short, Bassel Khartabil, an open-source advocate who has been imprisoned
in Syria for three years, was moved to an undisclosed location last
weekend. His friends and family fear for his safety.

I'd like to ask the people on these lists to get the word out on social
media (please retweet this ASAP
<https://twitter.com/Wikipedia/status/652164523671990272>) and/or translate
the post. Any languages are welcome.

Thanks, everyone.

I think I understand how much time is wasted replicating the same thing

When new demographics of Almere become known, all articles are to change.
Adding information to Wikidata should be trivially easy on a smartphone.
This has been proven by The Game. When it is that easy to add
information, the information can be updated in lists, in info boxes and
alerts may be generated to modify the text where needed. You will often
find that there is little to write when all the list, categories, info
 boxes are already updated.

The consequence is that people who want to write articles may continue
doing this. They do what they like best but at the same time we can do with
fewer text junkies. The fun thing is that experience has learned us that
when information becomes more complete we will attract more people anyway.
It is just that all information does not need to be typed in manually all
 the time, everywhere ad nauseam.

With more people adding data that is used everywhere, the problem of
sourcing becomes easier as well. Because a source is a source grin and
every language has its bias /grin but that is a different issue. One
solace, we should always compare Wikidata data with other external sources.
In this way we will also get some/more grip on what sources to trust. :)

On the other hand, I'm not entirely certain that Andrew's concerns about

When you are talking micro contributions, every statement in Wikidata

  It

Maybe send out sentences one by one for translation from one language

to articles which are non existent in the target language.

This is not the only one indicator, but it's pretty consistent since

Please have a look at the slides from that survey at

questions I have about the employee engagement survey so far include:

 (1) Is a survey of 84 respondents which asks age, marital status,

identifiable? Glassdoor offers much stronger anonymity,

 (2) In general, were there any questions pertaining to whether
employees are satisfied with their pay? I can see none on any of the
report slides. I do see questions pertaining to recognition which
are repeatedly identified as problem areas. Pay is by far the largest
complaint on Glassdoor from both satisfied and unsatisfied employees,
but it does not appear to have been measured on the Foundation's
survey. At 1:12:30 it is said that the slide deck will be made public.
I hope we get to see the list of questions too.

 twenty-four managers responding agreed, respectively?

 (4) The top two questions at
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB5m5AHoGnot=65m45s indicate that
those who have been working for the Foundation for more than two years
have very profoundly different assessments of both recognition (which,
again, seems to be the closest thing to pay that the survey asked
about) and the competence of people in key positions compared to newer
employees. Do we want to trust employees opinion in proportion to
 their experience with the organization?

 (5) At https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB5m5AHoGnot=68m attracting
skilled individuals for hiring is identified as a specific
improvement need. How is it being addressed?

Anyone in IT knows that there's such a thing as charity scale, where

 The slide at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB5m5AHoGnot=62m10s
indicates that in comparison against 120 corporations and 7
non-profits who have participated in similar surveys over the past
seven years, the Foundation scored in the 76th percentile on this
survey. I am not sure that reflects very well, given the state of the
 economy over that time period.

I do believe paying people more does lower their stress and attract
and retain more talent. Although there is apparently no shortage of
opinion to the contrary, I have yet to see any data in agreement with
 those opinions.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia redefined -- typography and UX and such

I wonder what the wikipediaredefined people would think of Brandon Harris'
Athena Project?

Any idea what the copyright/license status of the images used on that

is? It'd be nice to be able to upload the images to Wikimedia Commons so
that they can be annotated on Meta-Wiki and/or mediawiki.org.
