[Wikimedia-l] Which script oral language will use anyway?

2019-08-22 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Dear Wikimedians,

Some of you might be recovering from the Wikimania fatigue. Those of you
who have already recovered, I wanted to pick your brain about something
that came up multiple times during discussions but none really seem to have
a clear answer.

Which script (writing system) an oral language speaker would use for
creating an entry on (gateway [1]) projects like Wiktionary or Wikibooks or
even uploading a list of words on Commons using a tool like Lingua Libre?
Will it be the script used for the official language of the region where
the former language is from?[2] This is a bit controversial as native
speakers of many indigenous languages would see this as a form of
colonization. Will it be the w:International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)? This
is probably the least controversial but a common and average user might not
be able to read IPA as the latter was created by linguists and was created
for linguistic and scholarly studies rather than for everyday use.

Wikimedians who are native speakers of languages with less written/recorded
documentation and individuals who work on such languages are more
encouraged to share their inputs based on past experience.

1. Gateway project: This is a made-up term to define the Wikimedia projects
that are more welcoming to newbies and do not require stringent citation as
almost all oral languages would lack that. It was fascinating to see Amir
challenging that it only takes about 30 seconds to add an entry to
Wiktionary (
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amir_Aharoni_demonstrating_how_to_add_an_entry_to_Wiktionary_in_any_language_to_Ingrid_Cumming,_Wikimania_2019,_Stockholm,_Sweden.jpg

2019-03-08 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Great to see many old and new faces - I guess many Wikimedians might not
know active contributors from other language communities. Congratulations
to all the friends who made it to the list. :) Thanks Yohann and other
friends at WMIN for the research and letting us know about these
Wikimedians who are leading the Wikimedia movement in India and helping
bridge the gender gap.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] What's making you happy this week? (Week of 30 April 2017)

2017-05-05 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
What made me happy this week is the release of our latest converter (check
it out: https://or.wikipedia.org/s/14kh) that converts the Odia-language
text into International Phonetic Alphabet and Roman. We have been
struggling for some time now to add pronunciations for words and could not
find anything that could do that job. So another fellow Wikimedian Prateek
Pattanaik I scraped the code from an existing converter and created this.
Now we are going to integrate this into our pronunciation project
Kathabhidhana (https://github.com/OdiaWikimedia/Kathabhidhana) where we
create pronunciations of words. The next batch of audio recordings will
come on Commons with IPA and Romanization. Yay for more metadata! :)

[Wikimedia-l] Signing out with my official hat!

2016-11-10 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi

Friends,

TL; DR

After almost five years of professional engagement with the South Asian
language Wikimedia communities, I have decided to step down from my current
role. And I will remain a Wikipedian friend of yours who you can reach out
in volunteer capacity on my talk page.

——

I was about to complete my first wiki-versary when I joined the Wikimedia
Foundation’s India Program as a Consultant for Community and Program
Support. The program ran until August of 2012 and then got housed at the
Centre for Internet Society’s Access to Knowledge program (CIS-A2K) [0].
Thanks to Sunil, Pranesh, Nirmita, Nishant and many others at the CIS
family who embraced my team from India Program with great amount of trust.
CIS became more like a family for me all these years. It will always remain
my other home and alma mater - calling CIS a former employer will be quite
an understatement. I feel I grew as a person along with the organization
that is today a noted name for its research in openness, accessibility,
privacy, IP reform, access to knowledge, and digital humanity.

Over these years I have had the most memorable time in my personal and
professional life. I have traveled a lot in the country and across the
world, met many friends in the Wikimedia and the open knowledge community,
and had the privilege of working on many important projects both locally
and globally. The South Asian language Wikimedia communities that I have
worked with have not just been patient and understanding, but have been my
mentor in many ways. I thank you all wholeheartedly for being such great
friends and guides. And I hope that I have added some value to your
community, project and the larger Wikimedia movement.

This was an incredible journey and I feel really honored to see as many as
three new Wikimedia projects taking birth where I had a chance to
contribute. Many of you have shared your stories in an interview series
WikipediansSpeak [1] that I started during my time at CIS, and I felt so
touched and connected to many people that spoke languages that I never even
understood. I want to thank many Wikimedians both from the Indian and the
global Wikimedia community that participated in @WeAreWikipedia [2], a
rotation curation project on Twitter that I started as a voluntary project.
The good news is @WeAreWikipedia has always been and will be a
volunteer-led project even after I leave my professional role at CIS.

In the last few days of my work at CIS, my biggest worry was if I will be
able to give much time to wrap up Project Ol Chiki [3], a project to create
typeface family and input tools for the Ol Chiki script (used to write the
Santali language) that I was leading. I would like to personally thank to
colleagues T.Vishnuvardhan (former Programme Director of CIS-A2K) for his
guidance, Pooja Saxena for designing the typeface and several other
peripherals, Prof. Damayanti Besra and other friends of the
Santali-language community who have reviewed the typeface, and Wikimedians
Jnanaranjan Sahu and Nasim Ali who have created the input tools. A few
years of my childhood was spent in a place where 30% of people spoke this
aboriginal language Santali, and I cannot share how nostalgic it felt when
the opportunity came to lead this project.

Once again, thanks you all the friends in the Wikimedia community, and the
larger openness movement for your kind support over all these years. In the
long road, this was a great milestone but there are many more to come. I
hope to continue working with you in my volunteer capacity, and/or may be
in my new role.

Where I am heading next?
Some of you might know this already. I am super excited that the next
milestone is going to be another open source community as I am joining
Mozilla’s Participation team as South Asia Community Catalyzer [4]. I am
super excited for it. And I will keep seeing you all amazing people on the
Wikimedia projects like before.

Do feel free to get in touch with me in my talk page at User:Psubhashish,
or over email at psubhashish (at) gmail (dot) com, or at @subhapa on both
Twitter and Telegram.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Ray Saintonge has died

2016-09-14 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
This is such a terrible news. Condolences and prayers for Ray's family and
those whose were close to him in such a difficult time.

I still remember when I first met Ray at Wikimania 2013 Hong Kong, he not just
politely asked me to go ahead of a line for food, but kindly agreed to speak
over lunch. He shared a lot of interesting stories from his work. Unfortunately
I could not upload the video and it might still be in one of my hard drives.
Though the empty space he has left in the community could never be filled up, I
will try to search the video interview and upload on Commons.

Best!

I feel very sad reading this news. He was always friendly and fair. Had
always made me smile seeing him.

Expecting to meet him on a Mania is just natural. Knowing will never see
him there again is ... very strange.

I will miss him, very very much

[Wikimedia-l] Tulu-language Wikipedia goes live

2016-08-06 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Tulu Wikipedia <https://tcy.wikipedia.org/> has finally gone live after being
in the Incubator for nine long years. Tulu is spoken by nearly 2 million
speakers in the Mangaluru, Udupi and other South West regions of the Indian
state of Karnataka and in some places in the state of Kerala. 198 editors have
contributed so far to make this happen. The project has started seeing more
activity since 2014 when the first ever community meetup was organised in April
, 2014. St. Aloysius College and St. Agnes College, two educational
institutions in Mangaluru, India have done a commendable job in
institutionalizing education programs and several outreach programs for their
students. CIS-A2K congratulates everyone who have helped grow this project, the
language committee and other friends in the global communities who have
supported and guided in working towards the approval of the project. We will
continue to support the community to the best of our abilities and introduce
them to other friends in the movement so that they can learn the best practices
for community building, designing and running outreach and education programs
and several other Wikimedia activities.

[Wikimedia-l] [CIS-A2K] October 2015 Newsletter

2015-11-12 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
/meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/MWTTT). After conducting these two
events, and communicating with the participants the need to start a
training program on regular basis was felt and designing the
"Train-a-Wikipedian" program was initiated. Initially, the focus would
be on five Focus Language Areas (FLAs); a) Kannada, b) Konkani, c)
Marathi, d) Odia, and e) Telugu, and the program might be scaled up
slowly based on its first pilot implementation. The TAW page on
Meta-wiki (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/TAW), a number of topics are
listed that are going to be discussed. As not everything could be
imparted to every single participant, almost all the training sessions
are going to be custom-made where the learners will be independently
selecting topics of their own interest. Suggestions and inputs on this
program are welcome!

[Wikimedia-l] [CIS-A2K] August Newsletter

2015-09-15 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Dear all,

Centre for Internet and Society' Access To Knowledge (CIS-A2K) program
would like to share with you the newsletter below for the month of August
2015. We look forward to hear any feedback or input you might have.

Odia Wikipedia (available at or.wikipedia.org), an Indian-language
Wikipedia project, celebrated thirteen years of free knowledge contribution
in June 2015. It was one of the first four Indic Wikipedias (Assamese,
malayalam and Punjabi being the other three)to have started in 2002. The
first edit on the Wikipedia was made on 3 June 2002. Currently the project
has over 8,900 articles and about 17 active editors (also known as
"uikiali"). The voluntary editor community has put its efforts into
acquiring valuable content, re-licensing them under Creative Commons (CC)
licenses, and building tools for acquiring more encyclopedic content from
various sources.

Odia Wikipedia community assessment survey June 2015. It gives an overview
about the various hindrances for the growth of Odia Wikipedia and the
community.

During the thirteenth anniversary celebrations, the community came together
to assess community needs, address issues that had been identified earlier
via irc and mailing list discussions, and identify priority areas to focus
on in the future. Odia Wikipedia administrators Mrutyunjaya Kar and
Subhashish Panigrahi designed a needs assessment survey. (
https://or.wikipedia.org/s/tnp) Participating Wikimedians were asked to
discuss various problems they face in editing and outreach two major areas
that ensures quality standards. .

Two-fifths of participants said that problems with the rendering of Odia
characters in different operating systems, ignorance or lack of more
documentation about enabling encoding for Odia, input methods and keyboard
layouts, and other font- and keyboard-related issues as the major reason
for low readership and contribution on Wikipedia.

== Event organized/participated ==

(CIS-A2K events page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events)

⬤ Telugu Wikipedia edit-a-thon at Annamacharya library (
http://cis-india.org/openness/events/rare-telugu-religious-and-historical-work-preserved-at-annamacharya-library-to-come-on-wikisource
):

On 6 August a Telugu Wikipedia edit-a-thon was conducted at Annamacharya
library to preserve rare Telugu literature text. Annamacharya library has a
rare collection of the religious and historical works in Telugu language.
This event was conducted by Telugu Wikipedia Community and the Centre for
Internet & Society's Access To Knowledge program. The second iteration of
the event was organized on 31 August.

⬤ Tamil Virtual University workshop (
http://cis-india.org/openness/events/workshop-on-digital-collaborations-in-tamil-language-tamil-virtual-university-chennai
):

On 8-9 August, a two-day long workshop on digital collaborations in
Tamil-language was organized by Tamil Virtual University, Anna University
Campus, Chennai. U.B.Pavanaja, on behalf of CIS-A2K, participated in this
event. Four major topics discussed during the event were: Digitization,
Research and Development, e-learning and Open source and Outreach.

⬤ SDM Ujire Kannada workshop:

(
http://cis-india.org/openness/events/kannada-wikipedia-workshop-at-shree-dharmasthala-manjunatheshwara-sdm-college-ujire-karnataka
)

CIS-A2K has ongoing partnership with SDM College, Ujire. The college's
academic year started on 12 August. It was followed by a one-day workshop
where the students were introduced to editing in Kannada Wikipedia. The
head of the journalism department of the College Bhaskar Shetty and others
supported the event.

⬤ Tulu Wikipedia edit-a-thon at Mangalore (
http://cis-india.org/openness/wikipedia-edit-a-thon-in-mangalore-to-bring-tulu-wikipedia-live
):

A three-day edit-a-thon was organized between 14-16 August in Mangalore for
bringing good quality content in Tulu Wikipedia. This event, organized in
collaboration with the Tulu Sahitya Academy and Ramakrishna Pre University
College, saw 30 Wikipedia editors participating and creating about 89 new
articles. 12 of these 30 participants crossed more than 10 edits. Some of
the new participants faced problems with using the input methods and the
Wiki-markup. It is important to note that because of the lack of addition
of Tulu-alphabet code points in the Unicode chart, and the speakers being
well conversant in Kannada, they are using Kannada script for Tulu
Wikipedia Incubator project. There is a plan to organize a monthly meetup
and/or edit-a-thon to continue the momentum these editors have brought in.

⬤ Kannada Wikipedia workshop at DSERT (
http://cis-india.org/openness/blog-old/edit-a-thon-to-improve-kannada-language-science-related-wikipedia-articles-1
):

A Kannada Wikipedia workshop was organized between 18-20 August at the
Department of State Educational Research and Train

 say goodbye.

I will be leaving WMF at the end of June, to spend more time with my
family, focus on personal art projects and consult part-time on worthy
 causes.

I would like to thank all the community and team members I have had the
pleasure to work with over the years. It has been an honor to serve our
movement together — and to help our contributors share free knowledge
 with
 each other and the world.

I’m particularly grateful to Katherine Maher and our WMF communications
team for being such wonderful collaborators. I really enjoyed working
 with
them to manage and edit the Wikimedia blog, help grow our team and
 publish
some great stories together, to celebrate the heroes of our movement.

Going forward, WMF's Juliet Barbara will manage the Wikimedia blog, in
close collaboration with Ed Erhart. As many of you know, Ed is the former
editor-in-chief of the Wikipedia Signpost and has now joined our team for
the summer. I've worked with him for nearly a month now and find him
uniquely qualified for this project. Starting today, please contact them
directly with any questions about the blog (they are Cc:d on this
 message).

After June 30, you can reach me at fabriceflo...@gmail.com — or follow
me on Twitter ( @fabriceflorin ) or on my blog (
 http://fabriceflorin.com
 ).

The last three years have been an incredible experience for me, and I am
grateful for all that I have learned from so many of you. You’ve been an
inspiration to me and I have many fond memories of our time together. I
wish you all the best with the next chapter of the Wikimedia movement and
can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with next.

 Best regards,

 Fabrice

[Wikimedia-l] (Announcement) CIS-A2K Program Director Transition

2015-03-09 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi

Dear Wikimedians,

This is to bring to your notice the proposed change in leadership of the
CIS-A2K Program. The current Program Director, T. Vishnu Vardhan will be
transitioning by June 2015, due to health and personal concerns.

As many of you know, Vishnu has led the A2K Programme since February
2013. We at CIS are working with Vishnu and the rest of the A2K team to
ensure smooth transition so that the momentum of the A2K program does
not lose pace.

We will soon be putting out an Advertisement for the next CIS-A2K
Program Director and will involve the community members and the
Wikimedia India in the selection process.

Best regards,

But it is also awful, because I'm quite sure that people don't talk to each

videos, and sound recordings. Every time I translate messages that have
the word media in them, I think that a lot of users will not actually
understand them, and that if I would stand next to them, I'd have to
 explain what that is.

 Is my impression wrong?

Is it conceivable to consider that using the word media less in user
interface messages will make the interface clearer to the user?

Awesome work Victor! Loved the way you have connected the footages and created
a beautiful story - feels like experiencing the Wikimania in real. Kudos!

 jdevre...@wikimedia.org:

 Dear fellow community members,

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees I am
 delighted to
announce that the new Executive Director of the Wikimedia
 Foundation will
be Lila Tretikov. Lila is a widely respected Bay Area technology
 leader,
 most recently with SugarCRM.

As many of you know, about a year ago Sue Gardner announced she
 planned
 to
step down as our ED. As we launched the search for her successor, we
 spent
some time working through the most critical requirements for the
 role. We
decided the new ED should be someone with a product/engineering
 background,
ideally in an open-source or other online community context. We
 wanted
someone experienced with organisations that were growing, who'd
 managed
staff and budgets comparable to ours, and who had experience creating
continuous delivery of technology improvements in an agile context.
 We
wanted a person who is oriented towards collaboration, transparency
 and
openness, with some experience with complex stakeholder
 environments, and
with an international orientation. We knew we needed someone with
 courage
and strong personal integrity, who wouldn't be intimidated by
 attempts to
 censor the projects.

Lila is precisely what we set out to find.

Lila was born in the Soviet Union and moved to the United States
 alone,
 as
a teenager. She's been working for technology companies, primarily in
 open
source, in the Bay Area for the past 15 years. In 1999 she started
 her
career at Sun Microsystems. Shortly afterwards she founded
 GrokDigital, a
technology and design company. She spent three years as senior
 director
 of
development at Telespree, a company that provides cloud-based
 wireless
 data
services for mobile carriers. For the past eight years, she was at
SugarCRM, where she held positions of increasing responsibility as
 the
organization grew, including being in charge of internal IT,
 marketing,
customer support and professional services, engineering, and product
development. She has a stellar reputation as a leader who is highly
skilled, collaborative, open, passionate and curious.

We think Lila will be a terrific fit for the ED role. The
 Transition Team
(Phoebe, Alice, Kat, Sue, Erik, Geoff, Gayle and I) voted
 unanimously to
recommend her to the Board, and the Board voted unanimously to
 accept the
recommendation. She strikes all of us as smart, brave and
 unpretentious,
and we believe she has the skills the WMF needs.

Lila is going to spend the next few weeks in learning-and-listening
 mode,
and will take over the ED position from Sue at the end of the
 month. Her
first priority will be to immerse herself in deepening her
 understanding
 of
 the Wikimedia projects.

I want to close this announcement by saying a heartfelt and deeply
appreciative thanks to Sue, who has been the Executive Director of
 the
Wikimedia Foundation for the past seven years. When the Board and I
 hired
Sue in 2007, we were just a chaotic little non-profit in small-town
Florida, with a tiny staff and not much money. Over the past seven
 years,
Sue's leadership has built the Foundation into an effective,
 well-funded
 and well-managed organisation, with
