Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] On creating an Indian Wikisource

2011-09-15 Thread Gautam John
Hi All:

A quick update on this - it appears to be a little complex for the
Chapter for multiple reasons:

1. Importance : How important is this to Indian Wikimedians? Is it a
real and serious problem faced? Or is it something that is nice to
have but not essential? Could we do better work if we had one?
2. WMF-WMIN : Essentially, we will have to check with the WMF if this
is something they are okay with us funding/building (seeing as how the
grant money, for now, comes from them and that we use their trademark
in our registered name).
3. Partners : Assuming we do find someone to partner, how do we
support them and mitigate liability on both side.

Thank you.

Best,

Gautam

Agree with you that tecnical solutions exist, but then we are not the only
one to use proprietary social media. So its not bad using it. Everyone
uses it, be it Jimmy or events like Wikimania. The primary intent is to
reach out and in a simple way. Well as i mentioned before, If you want help
out spreading the word by using free media, you are more than welcome.

Lets not also get paranoid about Free stuff, which case the conference needs
to have a hotel which only uses Free stuff (right from bubble top
water, everything is proprietary) and so on. Lets get real, while we support
free culture, we need not always be living for it.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] social media to use

2011-09-15 Thread Pradeep Mohandas
hi,

Even other FOSS events in India like the upcoming Python conference, PyCon (
http://in.pycon.org/2011/) is using such venues as Twitter (they have a
twitter account!). FOSS.in was also on Twitter (again, with an account! -
http://twitter.com/fossdotin).

Given these two examples (there might be more), I wonder why we should not
use Twitter as well.

I am doubtful if there are pushing technologies when we do not have
accounts, where all we're doing is watching conversations around the hashtag
#wci11 and help if such help is needed. These are people already on Twitter
whom we're trying to help. Also, to engage them in ways that will have them
take a look at Wikipedia and maybe one day edit!

Also said, I am happy that this discussion did take place. These suggestions
are points for us (in the free community) to consider. Perhaps, a few of us
will try services such as identi.ca, if not anything else. If there are
interested developers here, the mobile version for identi.ca does need a lot
of work on.

warm regards,
Pradeep Mohandas

[Wikimediaindia-l] Internationalisation bug triage notes

2011-09-15 Thread Siebrand Mazeland (WMF)
Please find below the notes for the internationalisation triage bug
triage held on Wednesday, September 14, 13:00UTC in #wikimedia-dev on
Freenode IRC.

9 people participated in the triage. Two of the participants were new
to MediaWiki. I'm very happy that the triage attracted new potential
MediaWiki developers!

The triage was to have have two sections, each taking about 30 minutes.
We ended up with a first half of about 55 minutes and a second half
Of about 20 minutes.

Next week's triage is on WikiBooks

* Some discussion, but nothing final.

== Harder issues and discussion ==

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28428 -- Allow saving pages
with LRM and RLM in titles, showing a warning and requiring a user right

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28411 -- titles of articles
with LTR titles in RTL wikis may be displayed incorrectly in categories
and special pages

* It looks like a schema change is not needed, and that the
  page_props table can and should be used. Use batches where needed;
integrate that in Linker, LinkBatch and probably Title as well.
Ambitious according to Roan. Roan agrees that having displaytitle as a
page_ field makes more sense *conceptually*. In practice, he prefers
page_props because that avoids a schema change and is still cheap.
Niklas indicated the discussion gave him ideas on how to work towards
  resolving these issues.

The other announced issues were not discussed.

Thanks to everyone participating. Looking forward to the results!
