Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wiki Drugs

2011-11-22 Thread Abhilash

This is something worth exploring.

The en.wikipedia do give details, but only on the basis of the
scientific names. The brand specific names are not listed much, unless
they are very famous. Having said that trying to capture the full list
of drugs from manufacturers could be a very tedious task (esp
considering they may keep on getting them
updated/deleted/modified/renamed). More simple and trustworthy would be
to expand whatever is available and add more generic/scientific compound
name into wikipedia or a separate pharmacology/pharmacopeia section
under wikipedia.

Oral citations and citations from SME's would be the way to go.

Subject: Blatant misinformation and vandalism of India articles on Wikipedia

Dear Pradeep Mohandas,

I got your e-mail address from your user page on wikipedia. I understand that
you were involved in the Wikipedia conference that was held in Mumbai in
November 2011. This should mean that you are part of Wikipedia. I have to bring
to your attention, an issue, that has been bothering me from a long time.

There are a few administrators on
Wikipedia who legally vandalise pages related to India and block anyone who
disagrees with their point of view. (POV) For example, if you view the India
article on Wikipedia, you will notice that the introduction does not do justice
to what is arguably the greatest civilization in world history. It is heavily
biased and doesn't mention the fact that India is the oldest and the oldest
continuing civilization in history. It doesn't mention the fact that India is
an emerging superpower. The page is being constantly monitored and vandalised
by a group of users/administrators who seem to have an inherent bias towards
India. I tried editing the page, but was unable to do so because of the
following users: Fowlerfowler, Saravask, Quigley, Elockid and
ElockidAlternate. Of all the mentioned users, Fowlerfowler and Elockid (
ElockidAlternate is his alternate account) are by FAR, the worst. they seem to
have something
against India and Indians. Fowlerfowler has continually uploaded offensive
images in the demographics and economy sectionof the India article and made
disparaging remarks about India and Indians! He is an administrator!!

Moving on to Elockid and ElockidAlternate (same user with another account). Go
through the Economic History of India
article. Under GDP Estimate, the following sentence was deleted by
ElockidAlternate:

According to economic historian Angus Maddison in his book ''The World
Economy: A Millennial Perspective'', India had the world's largest economy from
the first to the 18th century, with a (32.9%) share of world [[GDP]] in the 1st
century to (28.9%) in 1000 AD, and in 1700 AD with (24.4%).
refThe World Economy: Historical Statistics, Angus Maddison/ref
and this sentence was replaced by:

According to economic historian Angus Maddison in his book Contours of the
world economy, 1-2030 AD: essays in macro-economic history, India had the
world's largest
economy during the years 1 AD and 1000 AD

Now, let me tell you how this is wrong on SO many levels:1) The first statement
is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT and the book clearly mentions that India had the largest
economy from the first to the eighteenth century!
2) In the book Contours of the world economy, the author clearly mentions
that India had the largest economy from the first to the 16th century and in
the 17th century! the sentence uploaded by Elockid or ElockidAlternate is
wrong!

I have tried to correct this error and I got blocked for being a sockpuppet,
even though i am not! I tried reporting on the Vandalism noticeboard, but i got
blocked from editing the vandalism noticeboard!!! Is there anyway I can alert
Jimmy Wales about the constant anti - Indian editing by some administrators on
Wikipedia? Also, is there any way you can correct these edits, cuz a lot of
people may be exposed to this misinformation! Please get back to me.

Regards,Frustrated
 editor!

Hello RK

Agreed

However, if its not very famous or if the brandname (eg here calpol or
fepanil etc) is being used to identify a generic drug by the general
public, capturing the list of names out there in the market would be
pretty difficult. We can probably include all those possible and known
brand names, but would have to probably expand on the scientific or
generic drug or chemical name (which is always given in the blister pack
or bottle or container)

representative and high quality India. He has gone to great trouble to
get highly reliable sources, wonderful images and good language on India
 article.

Frustrated Editor is completely anonymous, while that may be permitted on
Wikipedia, he is not visible to stand by his statements to this community,
he remains cloaked in anonymity, he has NOT given his own user id.

Statements like India is It is heavily biased and doesn't mention the
fact that India is the oldest and the oldest continuing civilization in
history is completely POV, nor does he give reliable source citations to
support his claim. The emerging superpower crap is another of the urban
 legends people want to add.

Only one example is given stated out of context. Fowler has shortened it
as per the tone of the article. If the user feels so concerned about it,
let him reveal himself on India Noticeboard article talk page take it
up for discussing. BTW canvassing is against Wikipedia policies too.

 Dear Pradeep Mohandas,

I got your e-mail address from your user page on
 wikipedia.http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User%3aPrad2609 I
understand that you were involved in the Wikipedia conference that was held
in Mumbai in November 2011. This should mean that you are part of
Wikipedia. I have to bring to your attention, an issue, that has been
bothering me from a long time.

There are a few administrators on Wikipedia who legally vandalise pages
related to India and block anyone who disagrees with their point of view.
(POV) For example, if you view the
 Indiahttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India
article on Wikipedia, you will notice that the introduction does not do
justice to what is arguably the greatest civilization in world history. It
is heavily biased and doesn't mention the fact that India is the oldest and
the oldest continuing civilization in history. It doesn't mention the fact
that India is an emerging superpower. The page is being constantly
monitored and vandalised by a group of users/administrators who seem to
have an inherent bias towards India. I tried editing the page, but was
unable to do so because of the following users:
 Fowlerfowlerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User%3aFowler%26fowler

 Of all the mentioned users,

 ElockidAlternate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User%3aElockidAlternate is
his alternate account) are by FAR, the worst. they seem to have something
 against India and Indians.
 Fowlerfowlerhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User%3aFowler%26fowler has
continually uploaded offensive images in the demographics and economy
sectionof the India article and made disparaging remarks about India and
 Indians! He is an administrator!!

 Moving on to Elockid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User%3aElockidand

user has content debates, he must approach the existing structures within the
community like (ARBCOM, Mediation) in case of content disputes and ANI in case

consume it. We are still far away from that perfect state, but as of now it
gives a very random fact from 40k + facts stored. So I thought I would do a

Dear All,

All the presentations from the *State of Wikimedia Communities of India*

community of India) and the combined PDF is uploaded to Commons. It is
available here :
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:State_of_wikimedia_Communities_of_India_2011_November.pdf

As you all know this was the first get together of Wikimedia communities of
India. It is really nice to understand that we are able to bring together
more than 15 Indian wiki communities.

Following are the Indian Wiki communities communities participated in the
State of Wikimedia Communities of India session (Name of the presenter is
also given)

   1. Assamese - Swati Singh
   2. Bengali - Jayantha Nath
   3. English - Ashwin Baindur
   4. Gujarati - Dhaval Vyas
   5. Hindi - Shiju
   6. Kannada - Swaroop Rao
   7. Malayalam - Vishwaprabha
   8. Marathi - Mandar Kulkarni
   9. Nepali - Saroj Dhakal
   10. Odia - Subhashish
   11. Sanskrit - Swaroop Rao
   12. Tamil - Srikanth Lakshmanan
   13. Telugu - CB Rao
   14. Indian Language Wikipedias in Incubator - Kundan Amithab

Urdu, Punjabi, Nepal Bhasha, Pali, Sindhi, and Bhojpuri language wiki
communities couldn't participate in the State of Wikimedia Communities of
India session either because community is not active, or a community
member didn't participated in WCI, or the community were unable to send a

 Agreed

However, if its not very famous or if the brandname (eg here calpol or

difficult. We can probably include all those possible and known brand
names, but would have to probably expand on the scientific or generic drug
or chemical name (which is always given in the blister pack or bottle or
 container)

  This is something worth exploring.

The en.wikipedia do give details, but only on the basis of the scientific
names. The brand specific names are not listed much, unless they are very
famous. Having said that trying to capture the full list of drugs from
manufacturers could be a very tedious task (esp considering they may keep
on getting them updated/deleted/modified/renamed). More simple and
trustworthy would be to expand whatever is available and add more
generic/scientific compound name into wikipedia or a separate
 pharmacology/pharmacopeia section under wikipedia.

Oral citations and citations from SME's would be the way to go.

What about online pharmacopeia? Do Indian associations not list the
drugs made in India? It seems to me this is a very basic requirement, the
lack of which (if correct) can be addressed by an RTI to the Ministry of
Health, possible bringing about a solution within months.

A very similar action could happen with indigenous pharmacopeia, but
there may be genuine difficulty with an authoritative source for the
medicines/manufacturers/vendors/formulations, as the regulations for these
may not be of the same order. Again, there is no logical reason why this
situation should be permitted or encouraged to continue - it is in our own
interest to see it improve. Oral citations may be the way forward.

 ml.wikipedia, I have recently started editing pharmacology-related
articles on en.wikipedia. I have noticed the same insufficiency you
mentioned. On Wikipedia, we do have articles covering various drugs
their actions and side effects, but most often they are not useful to
the public as these articles do not contain the proprietary(trade)
 names of the drugs.
Most of the trade names listed in Wikipedia are those from the US or
UK. Presently, the state of things in en.wikipedia is such that if
an Indian trade name is added to the Wikipedia page of a drug, it
gets deleted soon because of notability reasons. People often search
for the trade names on Wikipedia as they do not know the generic names
of the same. The end result is that those looking for information
about a particular drug on google end up reaching sites other than
 Wikipedia.

Projects of this kind are something I am looking forward to. Though I
am still a student, I would like to get invloved in this project(or
similar projects) if ever we plan to launch it.

 Regards

 Dear All,

All the presentations from the *State of Wikimedia Communities of India*

As you all know this was the first get together of Wikimedia communities
of India. It is really nice to understand that we are able to bring
together more than 15 Indian wiki communities.

Following are the Indian Wiki communities communities participated in the
State of Wikimedia Communities of India session (Name of the presenter is
 also given)

1. Assamese - Swati Singh
2. Bengali - Jayantha Nath
3. English - Ashwin Baindur
4. Gujarati - Dhaval Vyas
5. Hindi - Shiju
6. Kannada - Swaroop Rao
7. Malayalam - Vishwaprabha
8. Marathi - Mandar Kulkarni
9. Nepali - Saroj Dhakal
10. Odia - Subhashish
11. Sanskrit - Swaroop Rao
12. Tamil - Srikanth Lakshmanan
13. Telugu - CB Rao
14. Indian Language Wikipedias in Incubator - Kundan Amithab

Urdu, Punjabi, Nepal Bhasha, Pali, Sindhi, and Bhojpuri language wiki
communities couldn't participate in the State of Wikimedia Communities of
India session either because community is not active, or a community
member didn't participated in WCI, or the community were unable to send a
presentation slides. But I am sure as we move forward situation will change.

Thank you all for contributing to this great show of Wikimedia Communities
 of India.
