Vickram - good catch but even the lack of a copyright notice does not, per se, mean there is no copyright. Copyright is presumed to be granted the moment it has been created. Of course, and I am completely in agreement with the sentiments of the commons group, who evidently do not want to see Wikipedia get caught up in a series of fruitless litigations across the world. I was drawing the attention of the list to the fact that the government people, who claim copyright for everything the government publishes, despite the fact that some of it is commons, are also ether slipshod in the manner in which they claim the copyright, or being forthright about the fact that some of it, possibly the data itself, is not intended to be copyrighted. Now, the disclaimer wording brought to our attention by Abhilash also mentions that not everything in the site is copyright, one must look at individual listings within in order to see if copyright is claimed therein. Naveen would do well to check that the information he wants to scrape in order to create his maps is specifically copyrighted, as otherwise it is clearly free-to-use, and the copyright disclaimer is very specific about this freedom. -- Vickram Fool On The Hill http://communicall.wordpress.com ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l -- Naveen Francis ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
[Wikimediaindia-l] Request for a new list
Hi, I'm user:AshLin, co-chair of the Working Group for a forthcoming Wiki-conference in India in November 2011. I'm writing formally to you to request for a list for that event; a request which you may have already received informally from Shiju Alex. The event will definitely be taking place on 18-20 November 2011 at Mumbai and we have already requested Jimbo's presence at the event (as an example of the event's firming up). This is a joint venture between the Indian Chapter and the Indian Wikimedia community and will henceforth be an annual feature. We were about to start communications of the Working Group on a Google Group but community members have asked if our email group can be hosted by the Foundation and be a mailman list. If provided, it is planned to use this list for planning and organising all national wikiconferences in India henceforth. The advantages, we feel, are that the list and its archives will be preserved and secure while the Foundation exists, ease of use interface as all of us are used to mailman lists for community communication to date and that the future of the group will not be dependent upon Google policies. We request that the list be named WikiConference India, to distinguish it from other types of WikiConferences such as the Wikimania series. Should other countries decide to have annual national conferences, perhaps their lists could be named WikiConference (where is name of the country) similarly. Looking forward to a positive and early response so that we can begin our organising activities. So say a photographer aged 25 clicks a photograph and dies at the age of 75 (in 2061): Under current law the copyright on that photo expires on January 1, 2037. Under proposed law, copyright on that photo expires on January 1, 2122. The difference: 85 years! (I hope I've done the math correctly.) So only your great-grandchildren will be able to upload that photograph to Wikipedia. As far as I can understand, there has been no positive lobbying on this front by any photographers. No one has really asked for it. We, from the Centre for Internet and Society submitted a 'civil society submission' (with the backing of 22 organizations) which criticised this to the Standing Committee that was examining the amendment. But the chairman of that committee did not take notice. In effect, the Standing Committee heard only rightsholders (and groups, including ours, working on the exception for persons with disabilities). Are people on this list concerned about this? If yes, then we all need to try to get this particular amendment targetted and struck off when the amendment gets presented before Parliament in the Monsoon session. I believe you need to file a bug for this Ashwin. If you want, I can file it for you and get someone to close the request. Are you sure about the title? I would suggest something like WikiIndia-events or Wikimediaindia-events list. So that it doesn't become useless after the event and can be re-used for coordinating future events. The naming convention for the list also depends on country codes and previous naming convention, Wikimediaindia-events would be a sub-list of Wikimediaindia-l. Hi Salmaan, Thanks for the offer! Shiju is just waiting for a reply from Casey Browne before we file the bug. Since we have formally asked, it would be appropriate to wait for a while for the response. As regards the name, there are now a large amount of activities, lists etc communities, meet-ups etc coming up in India. We now need a finer level of grading between Foundation, chapter and community driven ventures - hence we are a little chary of appending media unless it is directly driven by or associated with Chapter or Foundation. Secondly, events are of many types, whereas we want a list specifically for the annual national conference and perhaps other conferences in India, hence the need felt for the word conference. So that it doesn't become useless after the event and can be re-used for coordinating future events. The naming convention for the list also depends on country codes and previous naming convention, Wikimediaindia-events would be a sub-list of Wikimediaindia-l. We had with us IIT-B Associate Professor and Creative Commons Project Lead (India), Shishir Jha. We had a nice mix of audience - people interested and active in copyright issues, film makers, librarians, publishers, etc. of up to 30 people. Shishir Jha began his talk with an explanation of the digital economy and then showed a 10 min intro (to give you an idea - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BESbnMJg9M; if you know where a copy exists outside of YouTube, please do share!) to Creative Commons after talking about the various Creative Commons licenses. Ashwin Baindur was present from the Pune community and gave us an insight into Wikimedia Commons. He also explained why Wikimedia used the CC licenses it did and illustrated it with an example. Gautam John, from the Wikimedia Chapter was also present at the meeting. He presented a brief about the Wikimedia chapter and invited members to join the chapter. He also spoke about Pratham Books' experiment with the use of Creative Commons. We had a fine and diverse audience who were people who had worked on the ground. They had faced some of the problems related to copyrights and raised good questions. The project (pad.ma - you can find them at http://pad.ma/) have taken video of the talk which will be released to Wikimedia Commons.
