Hmmm...that maybe true but what else can we do, I mean, Inkfruit has to be
involved somewhere in this right? Think about it, if you were an ad
injecting virus, why would you randomly inject ads that too of inkfruit?
For people who face these ads, are the ads appearing only on wikipedia or
other websites also? If I am not wrong, if this is the work of a malware,
it would display the ad on each and every website you visit and not just
specifically Wikipedia. If its only Wikipedia and the ad is only Inkfruit,
I'd really say, if nothing can be done via code, legal needs to be
involved. If its a non-specific malware, just clean your systems, I guess
and inform others.

Rather, I'd say, instead of not going public with this, if it gets too
frequent, go public. Display a banner on top of Wiki stating that if you
see ads on Wikipedia that is not at all related to Wiki, rather you should
check your system for malware. The point is people should not assume, that
Wikipedia has started ads.

point of view it can easily fool us thinking that it is not appearing on

I don't think the enwp community will agree to acknowledge the malware by
putting up a worldwide banner. Most of our users don't face this problem,
and the only problem devices are those which have been compromised.

The only effective resolution would be when Google and MS agree to patch
this up.

[Wikimediaindia-l] [Wikipatrika]: A quick update

2012-05-07 Thread Noopur Raval
Dear all,

A quick update on Wikipatrika. Here's the current draft of the next issue

http://wiki.wikimedia.in/WikiPatrika/2012-05/Community_News

As you can see, most of the sections have been updated with information on
events, meetups and Wikipedia news of our various language communities.
This time, we've also added an interview of a community member (Bpositive's
report on INCOTM) and an external interview (interview with a GLAM
Director) to make Patrika more informative and interesting.

Quite a few of you may already have contributed to this draft. The pages
for as, bn, gu, hi, en, kn, ne, or, sa, te and ta have already been
translated from the respective languages. There is also a Commons tab where
we can add information on various photo walks. The reason why I'm sharing
this update is for everyone else to add material that may have been left
out or any other details. Do remember that we are planning to release this
on May 10th so please do add your edits / sections by May 9th.

Also, going forward, we hope to coordinate the issue on the Wikipatrika
mailing list. So, I invite all those interested to join the Wikipatrika
mailing list here:

:) To give you guys more details, I will be working with the foundation
l10n engineering team[1] four days a week as a user experience designer.
During my 6 month contract, I will be required to look into usability
issues and design a more user friendly interface for language tools, which
are currently not very simple to use for a complete newbie.

The Goal: Lower the entry barrier for non-english speakers to start using
 and contributing to wikimedia projects.

Since work for the foundation is essentially public work and has an impact
on all of us, everyone is requested to keep track of our progress and give
feedback on our outputs to make it better. I'm still trying to figure out
what the best communication medium with everyone is, I think these lists
are too noisy and is ignored by a good bunch of people (including me). If
anyone has better ideas on what would be an appropriate channel to get
feedback on our outputs, please suggest.

You can track our work and progress in the following ways:
 1) Current sprint progress and tasks [2]
 2) Monthly updates and milestones [3]
 2) Sprint demos every 2nd tuesday at 2030 IST (Next: May 15) [4]
 3) Localisation team IRC office hours every 3rd wednesday of the month [5]

Logic is a regular at these events, and it would be great to see more
faces turn up and see the work behind the scenes to make wikipedia better.
Its also a great opportunity for those wanting to get involved in mediawiki
development to interact with some awesome coders and help you get started.

For my work, I will be needing a small group of indic language wikipedians
who are not familiar with English to get feedback on designs. I'm going to
rely on Logic for helping me out on this, if you can read this mail and you
know someone else, you can let srikanth know. I'll collect the names from
 him later (thanks srikanth :))

I will probably not be posting anything technical here again. I think the
best is to have a wiki page and keep discussions/feedback there. I will
 announce that system shortly.
 Cheers,
 Arun

contractor for the foundation's L10n team[1b] as an Interaction designer
along with Pau to improve the user experience of language tools and

I have been a longtime contributer to both commons[2] and the

Mumbai and Pune hackathons recently[4][5][6] where I proposed some of the
first ideas for the Universal Language Selector widget with Brandon, with
which we want to make language selection for anyone easy peasy.

Apart from that, I love cartography and maps [7], which would explain my

public transport[9] and traveling with my pocket camera[10].

Its feels great to have this opportunity to work more seriously on a
