Am just curious, being from the non-technical field and all. If there is a
problem with respect to IE7, should the problem lie with Microsoft? I mean,
can the bug be fixed? I mean no offense and if the bug can be fixed, it
should be done, everyone has their browser preferences that they are
comfortable with and am sure Arun meant it as a joke. But if the bug is not

As you would have got the update by now, a fix was made and bug is on its
way to closure (with a resolution.) post deployment[1].

There is no need to take offense on Arun's comment. It probably came
because he was bothered more about the lack of choice at certain places
than the technicalities given that lot of us value freedom and choice.
Nonetheless, IE7 should still be supported as it still gets 4% (861 M) of
all page requests[2] to Wikimedia. There would be hundreds of people who
might have the choice but prefer to use IE7 as their choice for reasons up
to them and bugs are welcome on IE7 as long as its still in use and

Dhaval,

I meant no offence in anyway, I was pointing out the same, that using a
particular browser is upto them, its there choice and this meant not only
you but like Srikanth pointed out 4% of users. I just asked it you could
edit temporarily while the bug was being fixed. The question was whether or
not the bug should be fixed, the question was, whether it would deter your
contributions. But I hope the issue is resolved now as Srikanth pointed
out. Happy editing. :)

Regarding the bug, I feel at sometime a decision should be taken to stop
active support for old browsers. We are still spending valuable development
time and effort on fixing issues such as these when we could be
concentrating on building stuff for the future. I can understand if there
are people using ie7 out of their own will, but from previous cases, it
does seem like a good chunk of users are in offices because of outdated IT

We look at stats to determine what browsers get support. If you look at
the stats
(http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportClients.htm)
you'll see that IE 7 takes up 4.20% of Wikimedia's total traffic.

When needed, we still support IE 6 which you can see gets only 1.2%.
See the discussion following the release of 1.16.4 last year for more
information: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.org.wikimedia.mediawiki/37243

Hope that helps,

IE7 and even IE6 still have quite a lot of users I think (IE6 being the
default browser shipped with WinXP, which is used widely). AFAIK, Microsoft
stops support for WinXP in 2014, and so we could go on for 2 more years I
guess.
