[Wikimediaindia-l] GLAM activity at the National Museum, New Delhi
Friends, We signed off 2013 and welcomed 2014 in style with a classic GLAM program at the National Museum in New Delhi. This is the best program I had seen till date. Join me in applauding Arun Ram, LShyamal, Konarak Ratnakar, and Swapnil for their contribution in making this event a success. Andrew Gray (WMUK) contributed to the first session related to this program with a personal address to the Museum folks on 23rd Dec 2013. We concluded the workshop on 5th Jan 2014. We still have some time to go before the 71 articles pilot is completed. That could take about 6 months. About 20 people have been trained and teams of about 4 members jointly worked on an article, and they were helped through till the publication of their first article. None of these are stubs. About 5 articles were published and their QRcode posted at the Museum. The enthusiasm of the participants was excellent. The support from the partner institution was great. We look forward to a great time for GLAM activities in India. [Wikimediaindia-l] National archives
The national archives seems to be open to all public and info is free without charge. One needs to go physically to NA, search the catalogue for documents of interest, fill out an application, and these will be retreived and made available for browsing. Digitization is on, but may take years. Catalogue is not available for online request. JSecy is abroad. So could not meet. NA would contain Govt files. Private collections of Gandhi Nehru and such others are also available. Oldest doc is fm 650 AD. Most from yr1700+. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] WMIN meet at Lal Bagh Bangalore- Schedule (Sowmyan Tirumurti)
This event happened today. A total of 15 members attended. We were taken around the botanical garden to identify a few notable trees by Mr Krishnam Raju, and his colleague Mr Thimmaraya. A few members from other NGOs who love trees had also joined the meet. Our next target is to get access to the libraries and the archives. The library is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Hence this will have to be on a Saturday. Another good outcome at the end of the day's meet was visit to the Director's office to thank them before leaving. Arjuna and Omshivaprakash met the Director along with me. This meeting and a demo of QR code by Omshivaprakash resulted in the Director requesting for a training of his department personnel on 4th Jan 2013. They wish to expand the scope of support beyond Lal Bagh and cover Horticulture in general. Their enthusiasm and excitement are good signs for further collaboration. Omshivaprakash will be organizing the training. Hopefully this can be followed by access to the Library and the archives. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimediaindia-l Digest, Vol 621, Issue 1
Asaf, On the GLAM event at the National Museum, we have have outlined what we wish to do here. http://wiki.wikimedia.in/National_Museum_GLAM_Collaboration_2013-14 We have a volunteer team which has agreed to conduct the event. I have sent an MoU to the institution and await their acceptance. We do not expect a problem. Adequate in principle understanding is present. There is an institute associated with the museum with 160 students studying museology, a subject related to museums. The Museum also has a 50 member volunteer community consisting of teachers, retired officials and such knowledgeable people who conduct guided tours. We have some students of local colleges and the community of Wikimedians from Delhi. We hope to address about 20 tp 30 interested people from this lot and engage them in a GLAM pilot for about 100 artefacts the museum may open up for the pilot. This choice is left to the Museum at this stage. Andrew Gray from UK has agreed to address the volunteers for an hour or two, during his holidays in New Delhi. We will get a over view of these artefacts from the curators at the Museum. They will also help the editors with references, and make available their library resources and meta data. Some references may be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. We will teach editing to the students / volunteers who sign up. Over 4 days we will take them through sandbox to first article with substantial content. Small teams of 2 to 3 people may jointly create an article. A second article may also be initiated. With 4 to 5 experienced wikimedians signing up as guides and 4 days of event, we will have adequate hand holding to reach the desired level. Emphasis will be on obtaining and uploading reference material so that even outside the workshop the editing can continue. A follow up event will be held a month later. At the end, we should have some photo gallery, articles about many significant artefacts, a group of editors who have worked together, and an enabling environment where Museum will help them in their ongoing editing activity. The results will continue beyond the workshop. Best of all we will have the museology students who have done this exercise joining various Museums in India. They can become key enablers for similar initiatives across a number of museums. Our current critical point is the schedule. We are pushing for the holiday season, and starting this in our current grant period. It straddles two financial periods precariously. We have to get a consensus on the dates with the Museum. This is expected in the next couple of days. regards, Sowmyan -- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 5 Dec 2013 15:26:29 -0800 From: Asaf Bartov abar...@wikimedia.org To: Wikimedia India Community list wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Subject: Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] GLAM project at National Museum New Delhi Message-ID: CAAmrcwdg= c+jirxcajawf9tqaqzhpeecgqehj-yf2bcurva...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Dear Sowmyan, Glad to hear this is coming along! I have likewise had requests for archive data relating to John Cameron (Krumbiegel's predecessor). There is also a great deal of as yet un-written history on plant introductions such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chayote (Seemay Badnekayi = foreign brinjal - one of the introductions to our diet thanks to the work at Lalbagh) as well as the numerous avenue trees (like the pink poui currently in bloom and chosen by Krumbiegel as part of his Ritu Samhara idea for Bangalore) For a glimpse of the excellent artwork of an unfortunately little-known botanical artist - K. Cheluvayya Raju - see http://www.benakaartconservation.com/Restoration/Portfolio_-_Art_Conservation__Restoration_files/Botanical%20paintings.pdf and we have several other botanical artists who as yet have no articles on even on the en.wiki (for example the somewhat famous pair of Govindoo and Rungiah). I have been postponing my own plans to research the archives there and would be very happy to join you in your meetings if possible. There are some active tree groups in India who will be interested too. best wishes Shyamal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Shyamal ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
[Wikimediaindia-l] Brain Museum at Bangalore
There is a Brain Museum at Bangalore. Radhakrishna visted this place some time ago and shared the potential with Omshivaprakash and me. We had been intending to go there, but some thing or other delayed it. This week I ended up visiting them. This is part of the neuropathology department of Nimhans. Dr Shankar is the brain behind this. He is passionate about the topic and is embarked on creating a great degree of awareness among the public. Just as we have many organ donation program for the eyes, liver, kidney and so on, there is also a organ donation program for brain, though it is not transplanted. Though many volunteer to donate other organs brain is some thing most people do not allow to be touched. Perhaps the identity of a person is deeply associated with the brain. Mankind prefers to burn or bury the organ than donate it. Perhaps the view is brain transplants are not done, and hence this donation is not necessary. The real story is research on brain related problems and their cures is constrained by the availability of a fresh brain. As time elapses after death, the remnants of the brain undergo certain structural changes and impede better study. We all know of many brain related problems, Alzheimers, paralysis after stroke, head injury due to two wheeler riders not wearing a helmet, spinal chord injury due to a person not wearing a seat belt. There are many who are not sensitive to the preventive measures. Even eating street food is a potential cause for brain problems. If one sees the appropriate specimen and then hear a pitch to wear a helmet / seatbelt, they can never refuse. The messages are so powerful. The brain museum contains about 300 specimen. Rat brain, duck brain, chimpanzee brain, brains of human foetus of various ages, etc Dr Shankar is a very passionate man. He wants to educate the world. He loves to explain things to kids, and medical students. But he is vary of publishing photographs and meta data for reasons he articulates with conviction. Plagiarism and thesis writing on the basis of such data is some thing he is keen to prevent. There is still a lot to be written about. One catch may be this sort of articles may require wikipedians who are also medicos. Do we have people with medical background, available for a hackathon on this subject. How do we go about this? Kindly give us your suggestions. ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
[Wikimediaindia-l] Opportunity to embellish Lal Bagh Botanical Garden related WP article before the flower show on Jan 26.
Bangalore is called the Garden city. Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park played a significant role in this city getting this name. The annual flower show on Jan 26th is approaching. A huge crowd is expected. I was curious to see what is in the Lal Bagh article in Wikipedia. I felt it was lean on 'Botanical' content. As a botanical garden there should be talk of the species of trees available, the rare ones that are not easy to find elsewhere etc. Yesterday I met the the Dy Director of the Horticulture department to identify any help they can provide. (Karnataka is perhaps unique in having a horticulture department as part of its governance structure). He has shown enthusiasm. Next week I will be meeting the Director (who is currently on tour) to seek his approval. Once this is done, we can have a Sunday meet of Bangalore wikimedians at the Garden, get a overview of the Lal Bagh and a guided tour by Botanical experts, who can provide the domain knowledge related to the unique species we have here etc. That should enable people to write about these dimensions in the existing articles. We may also explore possibilities of introducing a QR code for the unique specimen and articles related to them. In all probability some articles will exist. But if these species are rare, the articles can mention the availability of the specimen at Lal bagh in the article pages of Lal Bagh as well as the species. Hope fully this can be in the next week end. ie 15th Dec. That may give us ample time to embellish the article before Jan 26 flower show. I am also considering inviting PG students in Horticulture from the University of agriculturaal sciences, Gandhi Krishi Vignan Kendra Campus, Bangalore. Those interested in participating please write to me. Non Bangaloreans can perhaps look at Botanical Gardens with unique species of trees, plants etc nearer their town. I understand the Botanical Garden at Kolkata is also famous. [Wikimediaindia-l] CC Launch
The relaunch of the creative Commons India took place at New Delhi on 12thNov 2013. It was a joint effort by the three affiliates of Creative Commons India viz Wikimedia Chapter, Center for Internet and Society, and Acharya Narender Dev College. New Delhi. The Wikimedia banner announcements were very effective. The registrations exceeded 1000, and threatened to make hall capacity of 300 to be woefully inadequate. Mercifully, the actual attendance to registration ratio was just about right to make the attendees count to remain just within the capacity. Staff and Students from Acharya Narender Dev College did a lot of the voluntary work necessary for the arrangements. A nice rangoli at the reception welcomed the visitors. They also managed the reception desk, and behind the screen arrangements to welcome the speakers with potted plants, and present them mementoes. Dr Savithri Singh of ANDC welcomed the gathering. Mr Lawrence Liang, Co-founder of Alternative Law Forum, and the organizer of the first launch of Creative Commons many years ago spoke first. He answered the most frequently asked question as to why this is a relaunch, and what happened after the first launch. Lawrence narrated how the first launch took place from IIT Mumbai. At that time the focus was to create a version of the 2.5 license ported to Indian law. As many of you would know, though the basic licenses have been based on the international legal understandings among the nation members of the United Nations, making these enforceable among all these nations, further scope to port these agreements to a nation’s law also exists, and this is called porting. Lawrence and his associates did this with the 2.5 version. Lawrence remarked with humor that Ekalavya may have been the first person to have breached the copy right law and paid for it by being disabled from using the knowledge. Lawrence also spoke on the current international movement seeking to make the output of publicly funded projects public. Meanwhile, Dr Shashi Throor arrived and a majestic Diya was lit to symbolize the occasion. Dr Tharoor also electronically launched the webpage http://www.creativecommons.org.in/ . The India page within the website of Creative Commons.org can be found here. www.CreativeCommons.org/india http://www.creativecommonsindia.org/india Dr Shashi Tharoor spoke in support for the emerging open knowledge environment, and said his ministry has already made a beginning by releasing the NCERT books under CC By SA. We can count on him to support all reasonable suggestions in these areas. Ms Rohini Nilekani spoke about her experience in launching Pratham books, where the objective was to nurture the reading habit among children and to put a book in every child’s hand. This was followed by Mr Moksh Juneja of Wikimedia who spoke on how Wikimedia is supporting Creative Commons. Delhi has a vibrant community that is eager to participate in such initiatives. Many were impatient with the slow progress in this country, and wanted a lot more to happen quickly. This was amply demonstrated in the questions and answers session, as well as at the end of the talk sessions, when many did not go for the high tea and engaged with the organizers. ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

[Wikimediaindia-l] FDC grant
The FDC grants process has begun. We have already sent in a letter of intent. We are now moving to the next phase of making the application. For those who do not know about the FDC grant, this provides for staff, office, and infrastructure. We have considered opening a office in Bangalore, with a meeting room cum training center, where about 10 computers will be available for users / trainees. We can use this for city community meets, wikiacademies, editathons, hackathons, etc. This measure is to provide for a formal office for the Chapter in India, and give ourselves a exclusive address to meet compliance issues better. The facility is also expected to be more centrally located within the city so that members and other Wikimedians do not find it difficult to visit the office. Yet another infrastructure proposal that has been considered is to have a scanning facility to meet digitization requirements that can enable wikisource, and other wikimedia commons file generation We invite the community's suggestions towards major initiatives that can be taken as part of our activities in the Calender year 2014. Kindly send in your suggestions in the next 10 days. We will have discussions on the suggestions through this period. We will add financial measures to the proposals and submit to WMF. This is an open brain storming. Every one can build on the ideas of every one else. [Wikimediaindia-l] membership - additional requirement
Dear friends, Some of you may not have renewed your membership yet. Kindly do this at the earliest. End of June will mark the expiry of the 3 month grace period. In order to be more compliant with our eligibility requirement, we now need members to submit a proof of age and nationality. This would be a one time requirement. Future renewals will not need this. All existing members who renewed recently are also required to send this document to complete our records. To meet this requirement, we need any government issued identity document that contains the name, photograph, date of birth and nationality of the member. For example: driving license, passport, PAN card, and electoral identity card are some of the documents that would meet the requirement. Send us the copy for any one of these. Please mention your membership number for easy archiving. [Wikimediaindia-l] Report on Bangalore event of CC held on 25th Feb 2013.
We are happy to share with you the good news that the Creative Commons event held at Bangalore on 25th Feb 2013, was concluded successfully. We had the Creative Commons presentation focused on Open GLAM along with a wikimedia presentation focused on GLAM WIKI. Arun Ram, founder member of the chapter spoke about Wikimedia, and Wikimedia India. This was followed by a presentation on Creative commons licenses and how they work by Jessica Coates. Arun continued with a description GLAM and the intersection of GLAM with wikipedia. Omshivaprakash brought out many examples of Creative Commons used in Kannada web. Jane Hornibrook gave many examples of CC licenses being used worldwide. The event was attended by 88 people at the beginning. Ladies outnumbered gents 50 : 38. Apart from the students of College of Fine Arts, there were nearly 40 students from the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media. There were a few members from Azim Premji Foundation. There was a member who had come all the way from Pondicherry. The way some 15 to 20 odd guests hung around till the very last, nearly 10 to 15 minutes after the end of the event, showed the camaraderie built over the event. The major disappointment was that the target audience of Galleries, Museums etc were low in attendance. Overall it was a good event. ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
[Wikimediaindia-l] survey on donation process
A survey on donation process is being conducted by WMF between 11th March 2013 and 13th March 2013 at Bangalore. They want to understand the perception of potential donors to the message, layout, language, and mechanism used for the global fundraiser program. Apart from some donors, they wish to meet some community members too. Apparently there is a high failure rate in the online donation process from India and they would like to understand this first hand, while the fund raising is on, and as people go through the donation process. This would be a qualitative survey, with a one on one discussion and observation. Those of you in Bangalore and willing to spend some time giving this qualitative survey feedback can indicate when you can meet her during these days. Thanks. ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

We will partner with them in this event as Knowledge Partners. We will be conducting a Wiki Academy, and a Photographic contest. Expect some newbies from the eastern region. The Photographic contest is based on images reflecting the culture of the region being uploaded to Wikimedia commons. The following members will support the IIT Kgp Spring Fest related activities. 1. Jayanta Nath - Bengali Wikipedia Administrator, Bengali SIG Chair, FOSS activist 2. Kalyan Sarkar - Kolkata SIG Chair 3. Sucheta Ghosal - OPWomen Intern at Wikimedia 4. Biswarup Ganguly - Wikimedia Commons contributor 5. Rangan Dutta - Wikimedia Commons contributor, Photographer and Columnist 6. Karthik Nadar - Secretary, WMIN BB University College of Engineering, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district is organizing a event called Kanya Wizard'13 on the same day, 23rd Jan 2013. Their objective is to promote the addition and improvement of content in the web about their district. Wiki Kanya is one of the three events they have proposed. This envisages creating awareness about Wikimedia projects to 350 students drawn from 70 colleges in the district, and providing hands on training to about 50 students in editing. The District Collector and the Dean of the University are very enthusiastic about this project. We hope to stretch the scope of this to go beyond just one session of a wiki academy to a few follow up sessions in the coming months to hand hold the members to more effectively complete their task. Viswanathan Prabhakaran, Theni M Subramani and two more Wikipedians will be handling this event.
