Yes, I think Karthik was one of the Campus Ambassadors applicants. fyi for the
rest of the community, what we had done was to pass on the names of the CA
applicants to local community members and they were invited to community
meet-ups. This was done for Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai (around May
2011.)

For Pune, for example, we invited those had been selected and those we couldn't
select as CAs were invited. This had resulted in 2 community meetups in Pune
with >50 of these folks attending. (For other cities, we informed them the
pilot would not be running, but invited them nevertheless.)

Here's the text:

From Wikipedia author Karthik Nadar

On the day a terrorist attack ripped through the heart of my city,

Wikipedia changed my life.

The 2011 bombings in Mumbai made international headlines, but at the

moment the crisis struck, there was no straightforward information

about what had happened.

I knew I couldn’t be the only one looking for answers. So I went out

to take photos, uploaded a map I pasted together, and made sure the

Wikipedia article on the incident would help people make sense of the

chaos.

Since then, I’ve made thousands of edits to Wikipedia articles. My

experience that day on Wikipedia made my passion for photojournalism

clear, and I’ve followed that path ever since.

I felt so grateful for Wikipedia, and when I learned how it stays

online, I donated 250 rupees to do my part. Will you make a donation

to keep this valuable resource available around the world?

Wikipedia enables us to share the world. With 470 million different

visitors every month, it’s revolutionized the way we consume and

spread information -- sometimes even down to the moment it happens.

And it does it all for free -- with zero ads, under 1,000 servers and

fewer than 100 staff.

That’s amazing. Just look at Google or Facebook. They have hundreds of

thousands of servers and tens of thousands of staff.

It’s no wonder Wikipedia is the 5th most popular and most visited site

online. And it’s also no wonder why they need support every year from

people like me and you.

Will you pitch in $5, $20, $50 or whatever you think Wikipedia is worth to you?

Thanks,

Karthik Nadar

Debit card payments are possible now, see

Good to hear :) A lot of my collegemates who wanted to donate couldn't

One more thing, it seems, even the fundraising team did not plan INR for
2011 and INR happened accidentally when their payments partner seem to
support it. So we cannot expect everything smooth on the first time which
was not even planned. (Debit cards, Netbanking, not using VBV/MSC etc). I
am hopeful that fundraiser team is working on it actively and might help
out solve those, may be from next year we will have a completely supported

Subha,

Its simple. Chapter CANNOT accept any payment(or claim that it can accept)
*on behalf* without a formal agreement. Chapter cannot enter into formal
agreement due to FCRA laws. There is no point in talking about this in 11th

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Karthik Nadar is in the banners!

2011-12-02 Thread Subhashish Panigrahi
Thanks Sue, a quick question, forgive me if this thing has already been
taken to your consideration.
many Indians having no credit cards want to donate to WMF, is that possible
for the technical team to add Netbanking and Debit card payment gateway for
Indian banks. Secondly if this is not possible for this year is that
possible to inform the non credit card holders that they can possible pay
the Wikimedia India Chapter on behalf of WMF and the chapter can transfer
the funds later to the foundation.

regards
Subha

[Wikimediaindia-l] Karthik Nadar is in the banners!

2011-12-02 Thread Sue Gardner
Hey folks,

I just saw that Indian editor Karthik Nadar is in the banners today,
with a beautiful appeal. Go, India!

https://wikimediafoundation.org/w/index.php?title=L11_1202_KN/en/US&utm_source=B11_1202_Karthik2&utm_medium=sitenotice&utm_campaign=C11_1202_DayvMat_US&language=en&uselang=en&country=US&referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FMain_Page

Thanks,
Sue
