I think in my rather long email, you mistook my main point. My main point
was, lets not just restrict ourselves to tech fests. A re-read perhaps if
your wagering a 100 bucks against my 2 paise?? :)

My 100 bucks on this :
Let's not make assumptions before we try it out. In the past we've done
editing sessions, outreach and everything else in colleges. The success
*drastically* depends on *who* is doing it. Don't get me wrong but, whether
people agree or not, whether it is successful; ALL depe
My two paise:
Point 1: I myself am a student, and I kind of agree with Srikanth on this
one. Students aren't really interested in learning to edit Wikipedia at a
fest. If I was a newbie, I wouldn't even look at the stall for more than
say once or twice.
A better idea is to have a photo scavenger
Hi Pratik,
It is nice to get that kind of response from people. Maybe the scenario in
my college is exceptionally different. But if some colleges feel
differently, then I guess we can really go ahead and do this.

Bishakha and I did a short session at VJTI during the previous edition of
the technical festival. Money never came up.
The kinds of places that are going to ask for money for these specific
activities are the kinds of places you do not want to do these
workshops/sessions at in the first place- a v
Hey Gunit,
Its not all about sponsorship. We got a stall for free at the CMDA IT Expo
as well.
Infact, I just had a chat yesterday with one of my friends from Cummins
College of Engineering for Women regarding the outreach activities and she
was asking me how much do they have to pay to us for the
*Technical* outreach at these kind of places are also good - I did a 3
night workshop at IIT Madras' Tech Fest in October and the response
was great! (We got atleast one new contributor, so yay!).
It was very MediaWiki focused (rather than Wikipedia focused), which I
think was a mistake. Doing tec
FWIW Some thoughts below.
1. Footfall measures dont mean much from our POV. If 1000 people attend a
college tech fest, at best 200 will walk near where our stall is put up,
50-100 might come and hear us, 10 might engage in discussion(mostly to
clarify doubts on their previous edit experiences), 1/

Hi,
Rahul Deshmukh from Marathi Wikiedia and his team in IITB had a stall in
Techfest for the promotion. (just like the CMDA stall in Pune) Some flex
banners were also put up at some main positions at different venues.
Total footfall count was around 1L for the Techfest.

Hello Nitika,
It is true that technical fests are being held in almost every engineering
college and this is a good opportunity for outreach. The tech fest of my
own college, namely M-Pulse 2012, is being held in February, and I, myself
am a part of the organizing team. As one of the marketing co-
IITB's Techfest just got over. VJTI's (Mumbai) festival (Technovanza) is
from Feb 3rd to 5th (I can connect here- ping me offline). UDCT's festival
(Exergy) is going on (Jan 19 to 22). Thadomal Sahani has something on 4th
Feb, but this seems to be limited to biomed.
