Tulu Wikipedia tutorial (
http://cis-india.org/openness/news/tulu-wikipedia-tutorial): A series of
"how-to" tutorials were created by Pavanaja for new editors of the Tulu
Wikipedia (https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/tcy/ಮುಖ್ಯ_ಪುಟ). The
tutorials explain in details about various aspects of Wikipedia editing
like creating account/logging in, Wikipedia basics and wiki mark-up,
editing Wikipedia and adding citations. The Tulu Wikipedia is in incubation
at this moment and CIS-A2K is helping build a community in Mangalore and
places around Mangalore where a significant Tulu speaking community
live.

[Wikipedia-OR] Train-the-Trainer 2016 updates

Greetings from CIS-A2K,
List of selected participants for Train-the-Trainer 2016 has been
published *here

Following criteria were followed while making the selection:
1. On Wiki and Off Wiki participation and contribution.
2. Not more than two participants from a language community.
3. Application form
4. First time participants were given preference over Wikimedians who have
already participated.

Due to the incredibly large number of applications that we received it
would be difficult for us to write to all applicants individually.

We understand that perhaps 7 days (i.e. 25 January to 31 January) were not
sufficient to write on a topic like this, and/or you may need some more
time to create/improve articles, so let's extend this event for a few more
days. *The edit-a-thon will continue till 10 February 2016* and that means
you have got 7 more days to create or expand articles (or imprpove the
articles you have already created or expanded).

== National-level Wikipedia Education Program review meeting at Christ
University Bengaluru ==

During this 18-19th, a two-day long national-level Wikipedia Education
Program Review meeting was organized at Christ University, Bengaluru.
Around 25 participants consisting of Wikipedia Education Program (WEP)
leaders from institutes like St. Aloysius College Mangalore, Maharashtra
and Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Krantijyoti
Savitribai Phule Women's Study Centre participated in this event. The event
aimed at collaboratively build an educational project in languages like
Kannada, Marathi, Telugu and Tulu.

WEPs organized by CIS-A2K have managed to enroll about 3000 students so far
to the program where the participating student have contributed in creating
Wikipedia articles in five Indic languages and editing them as part of
their classroom task.

== Odia-language Women’s History Month edit-a-thons ==

Last month, the second Women’s History Month edit-a-thon (
https://goo.gl/VjCPgq) began on Odia-language Wikimedia sites. With a theme
of Women I am inspired by, the event aimed to improve articles on these
notable individuals. Twenty articles were created and ten were improved,
thanks to the dozens of participants—seven of which were women who went on
to found an informal group for female editors (https://goo.gl/K5D6CX) on
the Odia Wikipedia.

Among the participants, eight were brand-new. We reached out to Rajalaxmi
Mishra(https://goo.gl/cxrkL2)  to talk about their experience. Rajalaxmi is
a MCA student who began editing the Odia Wikipedia after a Utkal University
workshop (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Utkal_University_workshop). Annie
Besant (https://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/ଆନି_ବେସାନ୍ତ), an article she has been
working on since the edit-a-thon (in part thanks to Content Translation
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2016/01/29/content-translation-5-articles/),
is now among the top ten longest articles on the site, and she has also put
in time editing Sudha Chandran (https://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/ସୁଧା_ଚନ୍ଦ୍ରନ୍

[Wikipedia-OR] Train-the-Trainer 2016: Event details and invitation to participate

Greetings from CIS-A2K,

It gives us great pleasure to inform that the Train-the-Trainer 2016
programme

organised by CIS-A2K is going to be held from 17-19 June, Bangalore.

Train-the-Trainer programme was conceptualised in order to bridge the gap
between wiki volunteers/enthusiasts who would like to conduct off reach
activities and have been discouraged due to non availability of resources
and support. The three day residential event will include presentations by
the participants regarding a plan to improve their wiki-projects, expert
sessions about conducting effective outreach activities, best practices
from the global wiki communities, revised grant structure of WMF,
activities to understand WMF strategy and vision, understanding global
metrics and coming up with a concrete plan by participants in association
with A2K to improve their wiki-projects.

A2K invites Wikimedians to apply for this programme. Participants will be
selected based on their on wiki and off wiki activities and their responses
to the questions asked in the Google form:

If an active editor does not have a laptop, but his or her participation is
useful for the community, we would try to provide the participant a laptop
from any one of us for the event days. That's why we have asked to inform

* Sambad 100 Women Edit-a-thon: A two-day 100 Women Edit-a-thon was held on
March 18 and 19, 2017 in collaboration with Odisha’s biggest newspaper
publisher Sambad
* Women's Day Edit-a-thon at Jeewan Jyoti Women's Empowerment Centre, Pune:
Sterlite Tech Foundation and Jnana Prabodhini joined hands with the Centre
for Internet & Society's Access to Knowledge team to hold a Wikipedia
edit-a-thon at Jeewan Jyoti Women's Empowerment Centre, Ambawane in Pune on
March 10, 2017.

[Wikipedia-OR] Train-the-Trainer 2018: Event details and invitation to participate

ନମସ୍କାର Wikimedians,
We are delighted to inform that the Train-the-Trainer (TTT) 2018 programme
organised by CIS-A2K will be held from 26-28 January 2018, in Mysore,
Karnataka, India.

*What is TTT?*
Train the Trainer or TTT is a  residential training program. The program
attempts to groom leadership skills among the Indian Wikimedia community
(including English) members. Earlier TTT have been conducted in 2013, 2015,
2016 and 2017.


*Who should join?*
An editor who is interested to conduct real-life and online Wiki-events
such as outreach, workshop, GLAM, edit-a-thon, photowalk etc.
Any active Wikimedian contributing to any Indic language Wikimedia project
is eligible to apply.
The editor must have 500+ global edits before 1 November 2017
Anyone who has already participated in an earlier iteration of TTT, can not
apply.

[Wikipedia-AS] Project Tiger: Offline Edit-a-thon

The Project Tiger Writing Contest has started with great responses. A few
communities such as Tamil, Malayalam, and Punjabi are participating
enthusiastically.

We feel that real-life edit-a-thons might be a good way to encourage your
community members. If you are planning to have an offline edit-a-thon o
Project Tiger both financially and more important programmatically.

Note: Our budget for each offline event in India is ~8,000 INR.

It would be great if you could host an offline edit-a-thon for your
community.

Abhinav,
I am unsure if text in Bengali should be sent to Wikimediaindia-l, anyway,
Kolkata community meetup was conducted this Saturday (per Bengali
community, Kolkata's consensus monthly meetups are held every second
Saturday of a month).

In this meetup, they proposed 10 more articles to create or expand (the
first 10 articles have been created or expanded, some works are still going
on).
The thread informed the report in brief.

There was also a doubt-clearing session during in the meetup where 2
questions were asked, but remained unsolved a) is it possible to upload a
1.5 GB photo using Commons app, b) how to use imagemapping on Commons and
Wikipedia.
The last two posts discussed solutions of these.

Dear Wikimedians,

The Wikimedia Foundation is pleased to announce a small new program called
the Hardware Donation Program.  In a word, it is a program designed to
donate depreciated (but fully working) hardware from the WMF office to
community members who would put it to good use.

The program, including instructions on how to apply, is described on Meta,

Please read the information carefully. I especially encourage you to pay
attention to the program's design considerations, which determine most of
the decisions we'll be making.

We currently have approximately 20 laptops ready to be donated.
Applications are welcome.

The upcoming Wikimedia Conference in Berlin (in about two weeks) would be
an excellent opportunity to deliver some of those laptops in person to
approved applications, so if you think you might be interested, I'd
encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Please also help spread the word about this program, by forwarding this
e-mail to other Wikimedia lists you're on, and posting the link to the
program page on village pumps and *community* (not public) social media
channels or other communication forms you use.

Special thanks to User:Anntinomy from Wikimedia Ukraine, who had the idea
of asking about possible donation of older machines from WMF, and inspired
this program.

Mini-FAQ:

Q: Why are you doing this?
A: WMF's Office IT determines a lifetime for work machines, and regularly
replaces older machines.  This creates a stock of older, working machines,
that are available for donation.  We can donate them locally to San
Francisco charities, but figure that if we can find low-cost ways to
deliver them to our own community members, that's so much better.

Q: Am I eligible?
A: Read the fine program documentation.

Q: If I'm eligible, am I guaranteed a donated laptop?
A: no.

Q: Once these 20 laptops are donated, will there be others?
A: yes, eventually.

Q: How can you ensure people would use the machines for Wikimedia purposes?
A: We can't.  We'll be making a good-effort assessment of the likelihood of
Wikimedia use, and make a decision to donate (or not) the equipment. Once
donated, the equipment no longer belongs to WMF. We encourage, but can't
enforce, reporting on impact achieved using the equipment.

Q: I need a few laptops for my event in two weeks! Can I get them through
this program?
A: No. Read the fine program documentation.

Hi everyone,

The Affiliations Committee – the committee responsible for guiding
volunteers in establishing Wikimedia chapters, thematic organizations, and
user groups – is looking for new members!

The main role of the Affiliations Committee is to guide groups of
volunteers that are interested in forming Wikimedia affiliates. We review
applications from new groups, answer questions and provide advice about the
different Wikimedia affiliation models and processes, review affiliate
bylaws for compliance with requirements and best practices, and advise the
Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees on issues connected to chapters,
thematic organizations and Wikimedia user groups.

The committee consists of twelve members, six of whom are selected every
twelve months for staggered two-year terms. Those joining during the
mid-year process will serve an extended term ending in December 2019.

*Key skills*

Being a part of the Affiliations Committee requires communication with
volunteers all over the world, negotiating skills, cultural sensitivity,
and the ability to understand legal texts. We look for a healthy mix of
different skill sets in our members, including the following key skills and
experience:

- Willingness to process applications through a set, perhaps bureaucratic
process.
- Readiness to participate in political discussions on the role and future
of affiliates, models of affiliation, and similar topics.
- Availability of up to 5 hours per week, and the time to participate in a
monthly two-hour voice/video meeting.
- International orientation.
- Fluency in English.
- Ability to work and communicate with other languages and cultures.
- Strong understanding of the structure and work of affiliates and the
Wikimedia Foundation.
- Knowledge of different legal systems and experience in community building
and organising are a plus.
- Skills in other languages are a major plus.
- Experience with or in an active affiliate is a major plus.
- Strong track record of effective collaboration (such as evidenced skills
at facilitation, mediation, negotiation, and so forth) are a major plus.
- Willingness to use one's real name in committee activities (including
contacts with current and potential affiliates) when appropriate.

We are looking for people who are excited by the challenge of empowering
volunteers to get organized and form communities that further our mission
around the world. In exchange, committee members selected will gain the
experience of supporting their world-wide colleagues to develop their
communities as well as personal development in guiding organizational
development, facilitating affiliate partnerships, and professional
communications.

*Selection process*

As a reflection of our commitment to openness, transparency, and bilateral
engagement with the Wikimedia community, the 2017 member selection process
will include a public review and comment period. All applications received
by the committee will be posted on Meta at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliations_Committee/Candidates/June_2017,
and the community will be invited to provide comments and feedback about
each candidate.

At the end of the public comment period, the applications will be voted on
by the members of the committee who are not seeking re-election, taking
into account comments put forward by the committee's members, advisors,
Wikimedia Foundation staff and board liaisons, and the community. A final
decision will be made by mid-July 2017, with new members expected to join
later that month.

*How to apply*

If you are interested in joining the committee, please post your
application on the nomination page and send an email announcing your

must include the following information:

- Your full name and Wikimedia username
- A statement describing your relevant experience, skills, and motivation
for joining the committee.
- Answers to the following three questions:
(1) How do you think affiliates work best together to partner on
effective projects and initiatives?
(2) What do you see as the role of affiliates in the Wikimedia
movement in the next three years?
(3) What do you feel you will bring to the committee that makes you

[Wikipedia-BN] Train-the-Trainer 2018: Event details and invitation to participate

We are delighted to inform that the Train-the-Trainer (TTT) 2018 programme
organised by CIS-A2K will be held from 26-28 January 2018, in Mysore,
Karnataka, India.

*What is TTT?*
Train the Trainer or TTT is a  residential training program. The program
attempts to groom leadership skills among the Indian Wikimedia community
(including English) members. Earlier TTT have been conducted in 2013, 2015,
2016 and 2017.


*Who should join?*
An editor who is interested to conduct real-life and online Wiki-events
such as outreach, workshop, GLAM, edit-a-thon, photowalk etc.
Any active Wikimedian contributing to any Indic language Wikimedia project
is eligible to apply.
The editor must have 500+ global edits before 1 November 2017
Anyone who has already participated in an earlier iteration of TTT, can not
apply.

enthusiastically.

We feel that real-life edit-a-thons might be a good way to encourage your

Project Tiger both financially and more important programmatically.

Note: Our budget for each offline event in India is ~8,000 INR.

I confirm that I do not have any information about the cancellation of the
upcoming workshop in Gujarat. However this is true that we have to ensure
that necessary groundwork and needs assessment are done properly and that
is the message I conveyed to my team. I have asked my team members to check
this and get back to me and the mailing list as soon as possible. In the
last email I told that we would get back in 3 days/72 hours.
In case the community feels or we feel that the event needs more time to
prepare we may postpone it, but as of now we have not reached any decision.
I hope that makes things clear.
You brought up an excellent point we are really thankful for that. If you
have suggestions or idea about conducting or improving this workshop please

[Wikipedia-gu] Regional Call tomorrow at 7:30 pm IST

Following up on the earlier invitation from October 19, this is a cordial
reminder for the regional South Asia call
 happening
this *Friday October 30 at 19:30 IST. *

The purpose for the call is to discuss how communities in South Asia and
Indian Wikimedians can shape the future of the Wikimedia movement and get
involved with implementing the Movement Strategy recommendations

Katherine Maher, the CEO and Executive Director of the Wikimedia
Foundation, and Ryan Merkley, Chief of Staff and former CEO of Creative
Commons, will both be present as special guests to say hello and to hear
directly from you.

Hello,
Khilkhilat (Lit: Giggles) is an ambulance service that provides free
ambulance service to a mother and her newly-born child. The free ambulance
service started in Gujarat in 2012, and started expanding in other states
such as Maharashtra (project name "Vastsalaya").

We have had a short Wikipedia article on this project, which is being
expanded at this moment.

1) Image upload: The ambulance is pink in color (
https://civilhospitalahd.gujarat.gov.in/writereaddata/images/ambulance-khilkhilat-scheme.jpg),
however we do not seem to have a free photograph on Wikimedia Commons. An
image in the infobox will definitely improve the article. If anyone from
Gujarat, or any other state, has a free photograph of Khilkhilat, please
upload it on Wikimedia Commons and add in the article.
2) If you know Gujarati, can you tell which is the correct spelling
ખિલખિલાટ or ખીલકીલાત? The ambulance and the posters/news articles use both
the spellings at different places? (I am co-mailing Gujarati mailing list)
3) The article has scope of improvement/expansion, including factual
accuracy check. You may help to expand/improve or do an accuracy check
(please add reliable references while adding information). If properly
expanded we can try taking the article to DYK under the 5X expansion
category.
