Hey Mac... I sent ya a note before, and I'm pretty sure you've been busier than a cowboy stomping snakes down there... but I'd like to shake the trees, so to speak, around here, with some of hte local churches, to find stuff your folks down there might need - a truckload, maybe. This would be humanitarian, not technological. Give me a list, a contact person, whatever. I can't run this through other channels, for reasons not needed on this list... [WISPA] Re: Location Checklist
Bullit, I appreciate the offer for a right hand man, but the right hand man would be 4 days late at this time. Sharon has been here and on scene since conception and has been coordinating our efforts very efficiently affectively. Matt Larsen flew in today to assist Sharon with the crews that have shown up here to help in this effort of hooking up these shelters. I appreciate the help as we have many shelters between here and Baton Rouge that have no Internet access or phone services for the evacuees or the shelters. Please dont take this wrong - - - - but I have people in place to coordinate what/where how much. What we need is VOIP phones, PCs of any type. 4/5 port routers to connect the PCs phones, PTP links, PTMP gear, CAT5 PEOPLE to assist in what needs to be done. PLEASE SEND HELP. The truth of the matter is most of New Orleans population is in shelters between here and Baton Rouge. Please send that team (Adams) and another one. We need tower climbers (experienced with appropriate gear only) , installers, gophers and networkers, PC installers and folks who are willing to do whatever is needed. There is no glory in what we are doing - - just a lot of work - - - a hug from men and women alike that are surely grateful and a warm feeling in your heart knowing you made a difference in a bunch of lives today. FEMA made their rounds through the shelters here today where we had deployed VOIP High speed Internet services. I was told by the staff and workers at 3 shelters that they used the phones and Internet services to conduct their business for up to 30 minutes at each shelter.(except one) They seemed impressed with the services - remarked with compliments and left. The rest of GNU Technologies (Adams team)(the whole company) are here already as of 5:00pm this evening - including its owner as well as teams from CNT. I think there are 15 people here total and I am thankful for the help. These evacuees will be up in a day or two at the most and we will ease on south and continue what we are doing here until we hit the Gulf of Mexico and then we will turn East. -- Thanks, Mac Dearman www.inetsouth.com Rayville, La. 318-728-8600 - office 318-376-2562 -cell 318-728-2552 - home Bullit wrote: Rick, execellent again. He's in need of some solar and/or wind gear for the Katrina areas. I know I've seen some info from one of these lists about where to get alternate power sources. I know EC has solar kits now but I don't know how much is in stock. And they've already donated quite a bit of gear A couple of ideas that I had to get people by (for those that need it now or need it later) are: Run some wires from your vehicle battery to the back (make sure you are not in a trunk or something enclosed!!!) and use that to charge a battery(s). Use deep cell and/or big tractor batteries and run your gear that's natively 12 vdc from them and just change out the batteries as needed. Charge the dead ones while you drive. Also, many ups units are 12 vdc powered for the backup. I'd not be afraid to hook up a slug of batteries in parallel and run a wire right through the side of the case. Swap out one battery at a time and you'll have no outages. I'll bet 3 or 4 car batteries would keep an ups unit with a wpop on it running for days. Hope this helps! And if you know anyone that can help with alternate power systems please contact David directly asap. thanks! Re: [WISPA] need WISPA to step up
I disagree with you Rick. Part-15's effort should be supported as well as WISPA's. Different organizations just have different ways that they can help, different resources to offer, and different goals to accomplish. Part-15 took an approach that may had more beurocracy involved and interaction with FEMA and FCC, but its still a method that got started early to fight through the beurocracy sooner, for a possible larger impact long term. WISPA member's support also had its roll to get help out immediately to those that needed it immediately like MAC's group, bypassing the beaurocracy. But all efforts help. At this point, I think most people's intentions are not self-serving, but to help where they can in a time of need. There will be plenty of reward after the fact for people that do assist, wether it is via press, compensation, access to new client's or just plain self satisfaction that the contributor attempted to be a better person. If we looked for corruption, minds could go wild, with possibilties. Imagination could make just about anyone's efforts look self serving. For example, where does the gear go after the crisis is over? But those are all secondary concerns to getting people help. Why shouldn't an association take advantage of benefits gainable associated with giving? So my opinion is put your contribution where you feel most comfortable putting it, but lets not knock anyone's assistence. Its not a competition. OK guys that's enough. Part-15 is doing what it's doing. We're (wispa) helping with that effort to the degree that we are able to. No more infighting, back-stabbing or other whining. I don't think IBM, Intel, Cisco, WalMart, SBC, Microsoft and so on (the list is VERY long, VERY long) who are giving large amounts of money and products to the relief effort do this purely for humanitarian reasons. They plug themselves to every media outlet that will listen and publish... and promote themselves doing so.Does it matter? Well, motives may matter... but probably not to the person who can call his family, or find his family, or try to find a new life becuase someone donated something to make it happen. Does it change our view of these companies and organizations? Probably not. The Lord loveth a cheerful giver. But whether what the giver gave was given cheerfully or grudgingly, it still tends to do the same for the person who gets it. The difference is what it does for the one doing the giving. Let them find thier own reward or shame. This is an effort that needs to be thankless, and in THAT fact, it will come out that a wireless organization stepped up to the plate, and because of their efforts, a whole lot of people were more comfortable. Trust me, it will, for the most part, be thankless. Not a freaking soul's gonna remember (except those who see certain names circulated widely and often in our daily circles) who did what in a year. That said, I'm helping Mac and Johnny in their efforts, directly, for the same reason I never give money to the salvation army or the red cross. I want to know where my money / donations are going and what they're being used for. Money I have in almost no quantity. Time and effort I do. I think a whole lot of people here ought to think real hard about this new-found relationship with P15 that wouldn't exist without tragedy as the underlying cement. I would like to think that all of us grow a bit. And if personal frictions result in the future, or even now... Let's not let that get in the way of making the most of every opportunity to do something, no matter what we think of some of those in charge. There'll be plenty of time in the future to hash this out. I think it's a bit distracting now. Do what you think you should do, do it well, and do it as best you can. And if you know anyone that can help with alternate power systems please contact David directly asap. thanks! RE: [WISPA] Volunteer Contact Info Checklist
Thanks Barry, This is a political Hot Potato. How to cooperate and hopefully reunite the industry factions, yet remain somewhat civil as Part-15 tries to take all the credit. I appreciate your support and will continue to support the effort at Mac's and JohnnyO's the best I can behind the scenes for now. I hope I can get down there in a week or so myself. Be Careful!
