A company started by a real person (s) who sees a need and decides to try to

Need to yank the " primarily governed by FCC Part 15 regulations"
part, There are WISP all across the globe plus it's never a good
idea to tie a government entity into an industry unless you want to
invite yet more government regulation into that industry. Yeah,
yeah, I know what we do is tied closely to the FCC regulations, but
why make it lock step with the definitionIMHO.

Also why tie the industry to "fixed wireless"? I'm keeping my eye on
how to also service the mobile market, not in a cell phone way, but
more towards the industry that the iPAD has created...that market is
only going to grow dramatically over the coming year.

Bret and all that have made comments about FCC Part 15 that is why we used
the term PRIMARILY, this gives us the 'wiggle' room.

Most, if not all, WISPs got their start with Part 15 and I believe that is
important to include it in our definition.

[WISPA] Extending white spaces rules to other under-utilized spectrum

2011-02-04 Thread Brough Turner
http://blogs.broughturner.com/2011/02/extending-white-spaces-rules-to-other-under-utilized-spectrum.html
http://blogs.broughturner.com/2011/02/extending-white-spaces-rules-to-other-under-utilized-spectrum.html

Few seem to have noticed, but the FCC has an open Notice of Inquiry
http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2010/db1130/FCC-10-198A1.pdf in
which, among other things, they say,

48. ... An alternative approach for enabling dynamic spectrum use is
to extend the concepts underlying the rules for Television Band Devices
to additional spectrum bands. ... Commenters should address whether they
believe this concept is practical for other bands. If so, they should
identify in which bands they believe such a system could work and
provide details on how it would work.

Wow!

This is action on Recommendation 5.13 in Section 5.6 of the FCC's
National Broadband Plan
http://www.broadband.gov/plan/5-spectrum/#s5-6. While I'm generally
disappointed with the National Broadband Plan, this is one place where
there's a (perhaps remote) possibility for real, long term progress.

As I've commented in the past
http://blogs.broughturner.com/2010/10/long-term-significance-of-tv-white-spaces.html,
the largest value of the TV White Spaces ruling is that it provides a
path for opening up more of our incredibly under-utilized spectrum.
This NOI is the first step. Comments are due by February 28, 2011 and
reply comments by March 28, 2011. Directions and links are available on
this Federal Register page.

Re: [WISPA] WISP A Final Defination ...

2011-02-04 Thread Scott Reed

I will ask again, what do the regulations have to do with anything?
What about non-US, especially Canadian and Mexican organizations?
Why are we excluding them?
Why exclude wholesalers and others that only provide middle mile
transport?

I dropped the word "wireless" intentionally as it is redundant or
makes a circular definition.

How about:
A WISP is a Community based Internet Service Provider
that operates using terrestrial-based radio technology to
transport and sell fixed wireless broadband access or related
Internet Protocol derived services to end users and/or other
  service providers.

2011-02-04 Thread St. Louis Broadband
Again Scott, that is why we used Primarily so as not to exclude non-US
based organizations.

A WISP is a Community based, Wireless Internet Service Provider that
operates using terrestrial-based radio technology, primarily governed by FCC
Part 15 regulations; to transport and sell fixed wireless broadband access
or related Internet Protocol derived services to end users.

I will ask again, what do the regulations have to do with anything?
What about non-US, especially Canadian and Mexican organizations? Why are
we excluding them?
Why exclude wholesalers and others that only provide middle mile transport?

I dropped the word wireless intentionally as it is redundant or makes a
circular definition.

How about:

terrestrial-based radio technology to transport and sell fixed wireless
broadband access or related Internet Protocol derived services to end users
and/or other service providers.

We need to take part 15 out of there. 3.65 is part 90 and those outside the
US do not abide by FCC rules. There are also WISP's who would operate on EBS
frequencies plus there is the whole part 101 thing.

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] Extending white spaces rules to other under-utilized spectrum

2011-02-04 Thread Brian Webster
Some of us noticed this which is part of the reason the pleading for the
voluntary registration in the TDWR database and the interest in the TVWS
database methods. TVWS is a test to see if people can behave enough to
extend the methodology to pretty much any spectrum that is not being
utilized in a given area at any given point and time. If people constantly
step outside the rules and do things like run too high a power or fiddle
with things that cause interference, expect that there will be no access to
other spectrum.

Few seem to have noticed, but the FCC has an open

df Notice of Inquiry in which, among other things, they say,

48. ... An alternative approach for enabling dynamic spectrum use is to
extend the concepts underlying the rules for Television Band Devices to
additional spectrum bands. ... Commenters should address whether they
believe this concept is practical for other bands. If so, they should

details on how it would work.

Wow!

This is action on Recommendation 5.13 in
http://www.broadband.gov/plan/5-spectrum/#s5-6 Section 5.6 of the FCC's
National Broadband Plan. While I'm generally disappointed with the National

possibility for real, long term progress.

As I've

Re: [WISPA] WISP A Final Definition ...

2011-02-04 Thread Fred Goldstein

At 2/4/2011 11:35 AM, you wrote:

Again Scott, that is why we used Primarily so as not to exclude

Definitions are tricky; unnecessary adjectives can be
problematic. WISPs in the US are primarily but not exclusively
unlicensed, which here means Part 15; in the UK, though, as a
counterexample, they're generally licensed light (5.8 is treated
more like the 3650 band is in the US). But they're WISPs too, as are
3650 users here and, I'd suggest, some WCS and EBS/BRS licensees and
lessors. And is it no longer a WISP if it's not based in the local
community, but covers a wider footprint? And what if some of its
services aren't all done using IP -- does the definition have to
inject a protocol?

On the other hand, mobile opens a whole world that is outside of
the WISP purview. Hence satellite and mobile can be explicit
exclusions in the primary definition. So I suggest a short and sweet one:

A WISP is a provider of Internet access and related services that
primarily operates using non-mobile terrestrial radio technology.

A WISP is a Community based, Wireless Internet Service Provider that
operates using terrestrial-based radio technology, primarily
governed by FCC Part 15 regulations; to transport and sell fixed
wireless broadband access or related Internet Protocol derived
services to end users.

I'd look at Imagestream or Vyatta. Cisco, like you say is pretty high priced
(You'd probably want a ASR1K). I love my Foundry routers, but they don't do
services (Great at moving packets though) i would look to a CER from
Foundry, but price will still be higher than you may want, think 10k.

Realistically I don't think they'll use that all of the time, probably in
the 500-750Mbps range. No clue on average packet size.

You could use an ImageStream Rebel router for a WHOLE LOT less than the

I have a customer that needs a router capable of routing up to 1Gbps of
traffic - ATT Ethernet handoff. Should only really need 1 WAN port and
1 LAN port. What's everyone else using? They have shunned the idea of a
RouterMaxx or PowerRouter. They prefer to stick with Cisco, Adtran, or
 Foundry.

Cisco doesn't seem too cost effective; the only thing I've found that
will run that much traffic is a 7206 with a G2. Anything newer and we're
 in the $20k-$40k range.

Should I be looking at Layer 3 switches? They shouldn't need any
firewall or filtering on this device.

[WISPA] Question about FCC Form 499-A Telecommunications Reporting Work Sheet.

2011-02-04 Thread Christopher Hair
Trying to fill out the application to get our FCC 499 Filer ID Number and
one of the sections is for DC Agent for Service Process. I've done a
little research and made a few phone calls and from what I understand I must
hire a Law firm in Washington DC that the FCC will contact me through if
need be. Gotta love it!

Anyone got a good recommendation? Or should I just pick one from the
hundred or so that a Google search returns? LOL!

[WISPA] Redboot help

2011-02-04 Thread Charles N Wyble
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Anyone here successfully modified redboot configuration? On a
nanostation2? Turns out they don't have telnet on by default. I executed

fconfig -w -d /dev/mtd6 -n bootp_my_ip -x 192.168.1.1

and now I get

Config verification failed

anytime I try to perform an operation on the red boot configuration.

Help!

I've got all 4 of my nanostations flashed with OpenWRT. Now I want to
flash them with the ROBIN mesh firmware. Or does anyone know how to get
a mesh operational on stock OpenWRT? I've tried for a few days and can't
get it working. ROBIN mesh seems like the way to go.

And of course I can't flash firmware from the OpenWRT web interface
cause it only accepts the .trx files.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Re: [WISPA] Redboot help

2011-02-04 Thread D. Ryan Spott
The NS2s can be odd.. You have to pretty much keep booting them while
running the open-mesh-flash.exe app from a windoze machine.

I sometimes have to reboot the NS2 3 or 4 times to get it happy.

I'd be interested in this. Please send some more info.

Subject: [WISPA] Remote monitoring/ remote reboot

Hello,

We've been working on building a remote monitoring/remote reboot
board for awhile now, mostly for internal use. It runs on 9.5-55v, so we
are going to be using it at some of our solar sites to monitor battery
voltage and send alerts if they aren't charging, as well as the
capability to remotely reboot radios. Oh, and it keeps track of
temperature and turns a fan on if it gets too warm/ sends alerts at high
enough temps.

Anyway, we've got a couple out there, and we want to make another
fifteen. However, it looks like it'll be WAY cheaper if we order 100...
so we were wondering if anyone else would be interested in buying some.
I think it'll be around $100 in quantity. If anyone is interested, I can
send the data sheet and screencaps of the web interface.

Thanks!

Kevin

It should not matter. IIRC when the device boots it is pre-insert firmware
here.
