I don't consider bridging to be an acceptable method of broadband
delivery... thus, my insistence on routing at the CPE.

Waverider client bridges (EUMs) port block several ports, including SMB
by default, which is a nice feature, since it keeps the traffic "off the
air" before it gets back to the core router to filter. Port filtering in
the CPE is a nice capability to have, IMO. These ports blocked don't
effect PPPOE connections, but its nice NOT to see every user's shared
printer on the WAN.

My thinking too.

 The "Yelling
'fire' in a theater" or talking (or with a virtual bribe) someone
into a crime is at one end that is generally agreed upon as
undesirable for a society, sufficiently undesirable to prohibit it.

Yes, both of these are a crime. IIRC yelling "Yelling 'fire' in a
theater" is a crime if someone gets hurt
from it. If no one gets hurt (and the police/fire department are not
called) this is a non crime but in bad
taste. If the police/fire department are called then (again, if I
remember this right) it becomes filing a false
police report. If the website was saying "lets go kill the purple people
eaters" and suggesting that it is ok
"because they are purple" then I agree the site should have been shut
down with a single C&D letter.

What's at the other in this country and in others?

Where's the middle?

What is the middle and who does anything about it and, if so, what?

Good questions, I sure do not have the answers.

What works well and what offers the best protection against a repressive
government?

Revolution every so often?

It deserves the same attention to debate today as it did when the
Bill of Rights was drafted.

I think more so now. We are coming to a point where people are saying
Internet access is a right not a service, to me that

should mean that it needs to have the same rights as we do in public.

Ok, 20mbit capability.

Ok, but what if we say "flexible wireless standards, by means of
standardized replaceable radios"? Would that work?

> support for higher powered radios
> single and dual radio versions

Ok, so you want "relay" capable? Can we state it that way?

> QOS
> Channel size 5mhz,10mhz etc.

This is included in the "flexible wireless standards" statement...

> firewall

What do you firewall? I have a small list of ports I firewall, but havent'
found it to be a big issue.

> port forwarding

Why port forwarding? I find it easier to route a small subnet of public
IP's.

> dual ethernet

What do you use ethernet #2 for?

> POE - prefer standard 48 vdc

Ok, I did not include POE, thanks.

> small footprint

ok, good addition.

> SNMP

Good thing.

> syslogs and remote syslog

How much does this really do? Who has it and who uses it? I'd love to
know.

> watchdog, both ping and hardware

!!! good :)

> maybe e-mail alerts through self monitoring (could be done through syslogs
> server)

What would it alert you to? "failure" would be considered a disconnect,
would it not, in which case you'd never get the alert...

> support multiple gateways

CPE? Do you mean, a cpe that has 2 radios that connect to 2 different AP's
for redundancy?

> temp range for outside installations

A given, but, yeah, good spec to have.

>
> as you asked Mark dream list.

Awesome. Thanks. As I sit wondering how to achieve that parity with DSL
or Cable, so that I can have no large "install" cost hurdle and grow rapidly
without any more cash binds than I'm in right now...I figured I'd see
what everone wanted in a CPE. Not to evangelize a network type or
particular maker's system, but just generically, to see what things people
think are important... (or, "what the heck am I missing, here...")

I think MT's RB112 with the R52 does all this except for the <$100 part.
(More like $155).

Ok dream list.

I think for future triple play I would make that 20 mbits
what you mention plus:
multiple freq. by change of radio card .. for today 900 mhz, 2.4ghz,
5ghz

support for higher powered radios
single and dual radio versions
QOS
Channel size 5mhz,10mhz etc.
firewall
port forwarding
dual ethernet
POE - prefer standard 48 vdc
small footprint
SNMP
syslogs and remote syslog
watchdog, both ping and hardware
maybe e-mail alerts through self monitoring (could be done through syslogs
server)

support multiple gateways
temp range for outside installations

as you asked Mark dream list.

What's your CPE do for you... Or what do you WISH it did for you?

My dream list...

< $100 without antenna
can deliver at least 10 mbit to customer
Routing
nat
DHCP server to client
DHCP client to AP
bandwidth control
Centralized management and configuration
centralized or automatic update

What other things do have or wish your cpe did for you? Or,
characteristics

of your CPE?

Let's not get into dsss vs ofdm vs (insert favorite here) etc.

We always use the Times Microwave EZ's also and have had stellar
performance and reliability. They are not cheap but the quality is there
and the cost savings for labor help offset the price somewhat.

Re: [WISPA] Re: wisp-router

2006-03-11 Thread Pete Davis
If I sell you something, and you don't call me to tell me there is a
problem with it for a month, I will assume that you got it, and it
worked just fine. If you call me a month later and just opened the box
and the product inside isn't what you remember ordering, then it seems
like someone needs to draw the line somewhere. Would you go back to a
store and tell them that the VCR you bought 3 months ago was missing the
remote control? Do you think they would believe you?

Is there a time limit (longer than 7 days I assume) that you think that
the vendor should have adequate expectation that you have had time to
receive and inspect the goods that they shipped? Their printed policy
was apparently 7 days. What do you think would be fair? 30 days? 90
days? forever? You sent payment. They shipped a box, and stated that you
should inspect the box to insure the accuracy of the order. When there
was no response in 7 days, it seems fair for them to assume that the box
met your expectations.

This reminds me of subs whose first call to complain, they tell me that
"its been down for 2 weeks". I usually ask them if their phone service
has been down that whole time too, since they haven't called.

I am still fighting them. They disputed my dispute. LOL Who do they
think they are to take my money and not send the product? Anyway, I
will not give up on this. They will learn it's not ok to steal.

Brian Rohrbacher wrote:

Anyone ever have trouble with them. FYI They just informed me it is
my fault they didn't ship me out what I paid for.
I've never done anything with Mikrotik. I ordered what a friend told
me to, I don't know what anything looks like,
I assumed when I looked in the box it was all there. Well, I have
Butch lined up an am ready to use it and...imagine that,
I'm missing parts. Maybe I didn't call within the first 7 days. Who
gives a fart! Be warned. I just got screwed.
Credit card dispute to the rescue again. Ahh, this just pisses me
off. I should get what I paid for. I don't lie. I know I didn't get
the part. Speaking of not getting it. Don't these people know the
customer (ME) is always right? I can't get away with this crap with
my subs, that's for sure.
Just so ya'll know, when I first called, the guy I talked to said it
looked like it might not have been shipped. They would look into is
and call me back.
I was happy and thinking how I would post to the list and say how
fast they helped me and solved my problem. Nope. Not today. I

was promptly called back and blamed for their poor quality control.

Also, where can I order a RB564 Daughterboard to replace the one the
"ups guy must have stole"? Not wisp-router. Need it overnight.
