[WISPA] Chat List

2006-07-17 Thread John Scrivner
I have seen some degradation of the content of the WISPA list server of
late. A little humor and off topic chatter is ok but we probably need to
improve our signal to noise ratio just a little bit guys please. Let's
all step up the level of professionalism required to keep the list a
vital part of our business.

We do have a chat list that is designed to be a place to just chat about
anything on your mind. You can signup for it by going to
http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/chat and then you can tell
jokes, discuss politics, slam each other's heritage ( not really) and
whatever else not related to the business of running a WISP or improving
policy you like as long as it does not turn into a battle royal.

WISPA has been working to gain some vendor membership as well as asking
other WISPs to join. If this list looks like nothing but a "text bar"
then we will not attract others to this forum and we need others with
information and dues that can help us.

Thanks guys,
Scriv

2006-07-17 Thread Peter R.

I have spoken to a few people about this, because I see it on many lists.

Razzing or ragging on your paying vendors is kind of dumb.
If the vendor is willing to support the organization, why would you
discourage them?

Do you have people lining up to support your org?

As someone who has helped run associations, getting members and vendors
to join and pay dues is HARD!

I've read it.  Their focus is divestiture of BS's 2.5 GHz spectrum (and to a lesser extent the 2.3 GHz spectrum held by AT&T and BS).  They filed comments on 6/5 and reply comments on 6/20.  Several other parties made the same arguments, but Clearwire's are the strongest and most detailed. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a telecom attorney.  In addition to having WISP clients, I am representing PaeTec in the AT&T/BS merger proceeding and filed comments on their behalf.  Call me at 301-933-7216 if you want to talk about the Clearwire filings.Mark Del BiancoFrank Muto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Has any one read the Clearwire comment posted on the AT&T/BS merger petition,

Re: [WISPA] Clearwire Comment on AT&T/BS Merger

2006-07-17 Thread Tom DeReggi

Frank,

Interesting Comments.

I believe there would be benefit to publicly supporting part of Clearwire's
petition but with a different twist.
Clearwire makes good points on why BS/ATT should not keep 2.5Ghz spectrum
after the merger.
However their suggestion for what to do with it (2.5Ghz spectrum) is self
serving. If anything brings forward the threat that Clearwire is trying to
become to third party independent ISP or WISPs. I propose that WISPA sends
comments that adds that the merger should be prevented for many of the
anti-competitive reasons listed, but add, that if it were to be passed, the
2.5Ghz should not be allowed to go with it, and should be donated to the
competitive industry for Unlicensed Wireless, to compensate the third party
competitors that would be most harmed by the merger and foster optimal
competition. Giving more license spectrum to specifically one individual
such as Clearwire, would be hippocritical and not serving competition
optimally. Quite honestly, I'd rather see ATT sit on the spectrum than to
allow a well financed WISP have it all to themselves to gain a competitive
advantage. Or kept licensed, and donated to a third party non-profit for
experiemental licensing projects. For example, kept license, but not allow
any one entity to purchase over 5% of the spectrum licenses. To foster more
wireless startups that are not nationwide monopolies.

[WISPA] US, Japan to Lead Mobile TV Market, Contributing to Worldwide Revenues of $11.7bn by 2011

2006-07-17 Thread Dawn DiPietro

US, Japan to Lead Mobile TV Market, Contributing to Worldwide Revenues
of $11.7bn by 2011

A new report from analyst firm Juniper Research predicts that Broadcast
Mobile TV will reach revenues of $11.7bn worldwide by 2011. Japan is
predicted to lead the market with revenues reaching $2.9bn and the US
will follow closely at $1.8bn. The UK is also predicted to be a key
market at $989m.

Hampshire, UK (PRWEB) July 10, 2006 -- A new report from analyst firm
Juniper Research predicts that Broadcast Mobile TV will reach revenues
of $11.7bn worldwide by 2011. Japan is predicted to lead the market with
revenues reaching $2.9bn and the US will follow closely at $1.8bn. The
UK is also predicted to be a key market at $989m.

Although Japan is initially offering a free service on its ISDB-T ‘One
Seg’ network, Juniper Research predicts that it will start charging for
the service in 2008. Japan, US and UK markets are prime breeding grounds
for mobile television viewing mainly because of the large appetite for
TV viewing.

Although South Korea has had a head start in broadcast Mobile TV with
its DMB efforts, Japan and the US will overtake it in terms of the
number of subscribers, purely based on the larger mobile subscriber
base. Of the overall broadcast Mobile TV subscriber market Japan, US and
South Korea will make up 39%, with the other major markets being
Germany, Italy, UK, India and China, making up 36% by 2011. Juniper
Research has short listed 26 key countries/regions around the world for
broadcast Mobile TV services.

Aditya Kaul, Senior Analyst at Juniper Research and report author stated
that, “2006 has been an interesting year for Mobile TV with a large
number of announcements concerning broadcast Mobile TV trials and
rollouts, many of them timed with the World Cup in mind. The key
highlights have been an increased uptake in streamed Mobile TV services
and surprising results from broadcast Mobile TV trials, showing a
dramatic increase in the average time spent by the consumer on watching
Mobile TV”

However, there is still some skepticism in the degree of success for
broadcast Mobile TV. “Broadcast Mobile TV is definitely a step in the
right direction but its success will depend on many factors such as the
type of content, content rights, security, spectrum availability,
business models, regulation and quality of indoor coverage”, Aditya adds.

A whitepaper and further details of the new study ‘Mobile TV: The
Opportunity for Streamed and Broadcast Services, 2006-2011 (second
edition)’ is available at www.juniperresearch.com. Alternatively contact

[WISPA] Broadband internet connections increased by 10.4 million lines in 2005 and voip use is expected to more than triple, as a result.

2006-07-17 Thread Dawn DiPietro

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) July 17, 2006 -- voip.com - The Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) reports a 32% increase in the number of
US broadband subscribers during 2005, giving the US the highest total
number of broadband connections in the world.

As of June 30, 2005, the FCC has redefined broadband or high-speed lines
as services that deliver connection speeds in excess of 200 kilobits per
second (kbps) in at least one direction. They further expand that
definition to include advanced service lines where connection speeds
exceed 200 kbps in both directions. This clarification allows for more
detailed data collection regarding broadband penetration and trends.

All facilities-based broadband providers are now required to report
basic information to the FCC, such as services offered and types of
customers served. Before the June 30, 2005 change, those service
providers with fewer than 250 high-speed connections were not obligated
to report data.

Nearly 90% of the 42.9 million reported high-speed lines were
residential, with cable modems servicing 61% of that market and ADSL
accounting for 37.2%. The remainder consists of SDSL at 0.4%, fiber
connections to the end user's location at 0.2%, and 1.1% for other
methods of connection like satellite, electric power line, and
terrestrial fixed or mobile wireless.

Advanced services lines showed a 60% increase in subscribers, bringing
the total number of broadband lines with both upstream and downstream
speeds in excess of 200 kbps to 37.7 million primarily residential
lines. Of these, 61.8% had speeds of at least 2.5 mbps in the fastest
direction, generally downstream. As with high-speed lines, the majority
of subscribers are being serviced by cable modems (64.9%), while only
33.9% reported using ASDL lines, and 0.5% were symmetric DSL (SDSL) or
traditional wireline connections. Fiber connections accounted for 0.2%
of the whole, while other types of connections came in at 0.5%. This
includes satellite, electric power line, and terrestrial fixed or mobile
wireless.

Due to this trend of increasing broadband penetration, US voice over IP
(voip) users are expected to more than triple in the next 4 years,
jumping from 10.3 million to 44 million in 2010. Voip requires a minimum
of 90 kbps in both directions to work. Broadband speed can be checked
using voip.com's bandwidth tester at [http://www.voip.com/speedtest.aspx
http://www.voip.com/speedtest.aspx.

We've got a few customers that are mainly fiber carriers and
use wireless to extend off that.  The fiber business is a whole differnet
animal.  It can be good, but requires that you really understand what
business you're getting into.  Especially if you are leasing capacity to
other carriers, the audit requirements can get fairly hefty.  Most of the
fiber folks I know of use the fiber as the primary backhaul for their wireless
system and for direct drops into the biggest customers.  In one example a
school disctict actaully paid for the installation of the fiber to hit all
their schools (over 100 miles) but the WISP still owned it and was able to add
additional strands for a little extra $.  But the school ended picking up
90%+ of the total cost.  Now that makes the ROI look much
  better.Mike BJohn J. Thomas wrote:

I am looking to talk with someone that has laid some fiber to complement

making some short hop backbones between towers, and having the cities
get
involved as a customer of fiber, and hopefully it will pay for the

Pay your dues and get on the real WISPA list :-) where the tin foil hat
stuff is not posted.

I hate to ask, but can we keep the TIN FOIL HAT stuff off this list?

I'm here to talk about wireless and ISP matters

I know this is completely off any topic on list, but I felt compelled to
share this link (streaming video) with the masses here. Forgive me if I am
too far out of line.
If you think you knew what was going on during the WTC crisis and the
Pentagon - - you better take another look at this and rethink your position
on everything as you can see more of the facts with this documentary. Be
prepared to sit a while as its pretty long, but full of "common sense"
logic.
