[WISPA] strange mt issue

2007-02-23 Thread Marlon K. Schafer

Hi All,

OK, this is really strange.

Picked up a new MT ide drive card and 4 port nic card to use as a backup
router.

Put the unit in the pc and it stops at loading E.

OK, bad unit.

Took it back to Spokane and Bob K. put that unit into a machine he'd been
working on. Even worse problem for him. Hm.

So in goes another chip to make sure that it's not a puter problem. THAT
one now won't work either. It had been one he'd already been using.

Use a new machine, load up a new ide chip for me. I saw him do it.

Take that one home, put it in the pc, same thing! Loading E.

Put it into another machine, won't work there either.

Hook up a hard drive to the port, that won't boot.

4 machines and 4 hard drives later i still don't have a config that works!
Put that ide chip in any pc and it kills the ide port.

What the $%&# over? Anyone seen anything like this before?

Bob tells me that nothing he puts in the machine that worked before I got
there will work now either.

Could that first machine of mine had some kind of bios virus that has now
spread to all other boxes?

The machine was my old mail server, a working pull used up till a few months
ago.

The next machine was my old mt router, a working pull sitting on the shelf
for over a year (it had flaked out so I replaced the whole thing and tossed
the chip).

The next machine was my old web server (all three the same hardware bought
at the same time as i recall).

The last machine was an old windows server or something. Don't ever
remember for sure. It has two scsi drives in it, that's the only thing
that'll still boot. But only to the two scsi drives, nothing ide.

Ideas
thanks,
marlon

2007-02-23 Thread Jenco Wireless

They tried to buy my company. I wasn't trying to sell so I didn't try too
hard! I think I may have been their first try. The offer was really low.
They paid a lot more for a lot less on their next acquisition. If I knew
they were going to setup in Arizona, I would have played it a lot
differently !!

We are putting together a bid to serve some small kiosk type
buildings. The don't want the antenna on the outside of building.
Instead they would like to put the antenna under it's false roof. The
roof is made of fairly thin vinyl material. Has anybody had any
experience with what a 5.8Ghz signal will do through that? We have
setup a time to test next week but if it is not going to work I don't
even want to waste time writing up a proposal. The sites are all over
town so there will be some long shots that will not work if there is
much signal loss.

I must say that you are hitting the "nail on the head" Marlon! Julius Knapp

all file a comment it would be thousands of WISP comments. Julius said "the

EVERYONE here needs to file personally. Here's my confirmation

Just go to this link:
http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/upload_v2.cgi

Put 04-186 in the top left box and follow the instructions to voice your
opinions on what the FCC should do with the soon to be opened up tv
bands! All you have to do is till them to make the bands unlicensed, no

auctions, no registration etc. Say more if you want, but we really need to
drive home the unlicensed idea.

Thanks, Marlon for pointing out this issue to me. I'm running the
following

today:

FCC White Space Proceeding: What's at Stake

The FCC has spectrum to allocate, and that means big money will talk, but
there's a chance that the WISP industry can get some of the additional
unlicensed spectrum it wants and needs.

http://www.isp-planet.com/fixed_wireless/politics/2007/tv_whitespace_spectru
m.html

Action Item for WISPs: File With the FCC for More Unlicensed Spectrum

WISPs need more unlicensed spectrum, but so far barely a dozen have filed
comments with the FCC arguing in favor of it. If WISPs fail to act, the
usual monopolies will set the rules, again.

Hi All,

There has been more activity on the TV band issue. I've attached the
WISPA

comments. PLEASE read them and file comments of your own.

On your filing it should be on company letterhead. State that you support
the WISPA stance and add any other comments you may have.

Guys, this is REALLY important! There is quite a bit of spectrum on the
block, it's all sub ghz and in most of the country it's totally unused as
soon as the DTV transition is done.

Here is the latest WISPA filing. Make sure you do yours too!
http://www.wispa.org/?page_id=18

Do you want to be able to build 40 mile cells? You need this.

Want to be able to build systems in the middle of the forests your subs
live

in? You need this.

Want a system that's designed to automatically coordinate with other users
in your area? Tell the FCC that!

You've all seen the discussions on this issue over the years. It's not
going away. This band WILL be allocated to someone. Probably unlicensed
but that's not set in stone by any means! There are those working to add
requirements that will kill the band from a practical standpoint.

You HAVE to file on this, even if it's just to say that you support the
WISPA filing.

To file go to this link and put 04-186 in the top left box:
http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/upload_v2.cgi

Just fill in the blanks, then go down to the next level and attach your
comments. Select the type of document (PDF, word etc.) and submit it.
This

is very simple to do and the VOLUME of filings matters too.

If you'd like to see what the latest from the FCC is on the issue:
The first NPRM:

Further NPRM (latest):
http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-06-156A1.pdf

To read what others have said, just put 04-186 into the box on the top
left:

http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/comsrch_v2.cgi

WISPA's confirmation number is: 2007220485913

Sincerely,

[WISPA] tv whitespaces filings

2007-02-23 Thread Marlon K. Schafer (509) 982-2181

Good grief guys, there are only 12 new filings in the last week or so!!

Why, in the name of God, would the FCC give a rats behind about our industry
if we can't be bothered to talk to them?

Listen, the new rules get made according to the WRITTEN record! Our trips
to the FCC are great and we both learn a lot, but when it comes time to make
regulations they go to the paperwork that's been filed!

[WISPA] 900 interference- Licensed operation on 902-928

2007-02-23 Thread rwf
I am passing on a list of known Amateur Radio repeaters in the 902-928 band.

If you want to be a good RF citizen and avoid interference it would be a
good idea to consult this list and coordinate operation with them if you
share an area. They will usually also know where other sources of
interference may be.

This list is given with the understand that you will use it in a
constructive way, and to ensure that you are informed as to any activity out
there.

Remember: They are licensed- you are not. Their license (call sign) is right
on the list.

As an extra benefit, though, these people are anxious to work with radio
technology and may already be trying to figure out what interference they
are seeing may be. They have the same problems as you do with cordless
phones, illegal video senders and whatnot. Some of them may be excellent
resources (or potential future employees)

There may also be licensed Amateur television in the same spectrum, mostly
in California though. If there is an interest I can attempt to compile a
list of that as well.

The good word here is COORDINATE with your neighbors.
Repeating for good measure: The good word here is COORDINATE with your
neighbors.

The URL (which should be on your favorites if you deploy 900) is
http://www.ohioaprs.net/ar902/

Yes- I have one on the list. I am a WISP - and a Ham

[WISPA] 900 interference- Filters

2007-02-23 Thread rwf
I have a friend who builds custom filters and has built them for the market
as well as NASA.
I've asked him for details on anything he sells for passing 902-928 and also
protecting (notching) from specific ranges like 929.

[WISPA] 900 Interference- Pagers

2007-02-23 Thread rwf

By the way- on 2 way pagers, the portable pager device (usually 1 watt)
transmits on 901 or so. Any place you have Skytel or any other 2 way you
will need to make sure that YOU don't interfere with them on 901. Otherwise
the shoe is on the other foot- you are out of band and they are licensed.
This would mean being cognizant of where their receive antennas are and
keeping your low-end 900 antennas well away from them. Of course the do
have good filters because they sometimes combine antennas, but of course at
that point, they are interested in filtering mostly their own 929-931
transmitters out and not 902.928.
