Re: [WISPA] URGENT need contact for Mikrotik Parts nearsouthwestOhio

2009-07-11 Thread Tom DeReggi
Well, that was one of the Trango advantages. It has some Lightning/Surge
protection circuitry built-in to the radio's mainboard.
It also bonds the Ethernet jack shield directly to the metal case.

To replicate that with OEM systems, you really need a third party Surge
Arrestor inside your radio enclosure, that you can bond properly.
Citel has an OEM circuit board version of its Outdoor mountable 802.11af
model. I think it was only like $15 or so.

The mentality for ext surge arrestors is usuallyto put it at the bottom of
the tower, because if it blew, it would be easilly replacable. That was
fine to protect indoor equipment, and that was fine to prevent AC/DC
electric surges from getting up to the radio. But for lightning hits that
doesn't really protect the tower radio gear. Ideally an immediate bond to
ground is preferred, without any outside cables between the radio and the
protector, that could absorb current from the adjacent air that could be in
electric field path of hit..

What I want to know is what Trango & some others do to "harden" their
ethernet ports? I had a set of 5800's that took dozens lightning hits
over a period of several years and keep on going.
Alternatively, my other equipment doesnt fare so well. It's all set up
the same way - ground, lighting protector, etc.

I also woke to a site being down (5 actually because they are fed thru
the one that got it).
I lost an omni (big hole in it), switch, 433ah, 532, and associated
cards and pigtails were replaced too. It's was not too bad really.
Took me 3 hrs from the time I rolled out of bed to the time my feet were
back on the ground and off the tower.

All true. Hard to make a list of the vendors you want to use.
The other thing that amazes me is how often another WISP offers
equipment to get someone out of a bind. It is a great industry to be

Re: [WISPA] URGENT need contact for Mikrotik Parts near southwest Ohio

2009-07-11 Thread Robert West
Streakwave now has a distribution center in Cincinnati. They stock
everything Streakwave sells. I have no afterhours numbers for them but if
someone has a private number for ANYONE at Streakwave they can probably find
someone over there to help you. The sales people from RF-Linx
Moved over to the Streakwave Dist. Center so if anyone has any of the
salespeople from RF-Linx, that may get you in the door as well.

Sounds like you got hit with the same storm that come through here in South
Central Ohio

So I wake up with thunder shaking the house and 3 minutes later, text
messages start blowing up my phone. I lost two out of three AN50 ODUs
and 3 of 3 433ah boards. Two Trango 5800 APs survive (though one
needed a new poe). The 493 concentrator/switch lost some ports, too.

If anyone has mobile numbers for anyone at Roc Noc or Quicklink
Wireless I would greatly appreciate you providing me (offlist) with
getting a hold of them.

I'm about 2 hours from Quicklink and 6 hous from Roc Noc.

If anyone knows of a MikroTik vendor near south west Ohio besides
these two I would appreciate knowing about them, too, and would love
to get a hold of them this weekend.

[WISPA] URGENT need contact for Mikrotik Parts near southwest Ohio

2009-07-11 Thread Josh Luthman
