[WISPA] Marketing

We now have 2 gig fibers capable of being turned up to 10 gig, one through
Cogent and one through COX. We wanted to try marketing to customers and
installing licensed dedicated links. Is there a service that handles the FCC
side of things? This aspect is totally new to us. What is the turn around to
time to get the licensed and link set up with the FCC.. Again, we are new to
Licensed and have no idea how it works, all we know is unlicensed bands. 

 

We are in Tucson, AZ.

AFAIK, it's illegal in every state to have an online raffle that is fee
based.  Certain NFP's can get a permit for an online raffle based on state
laws.

Smart marketing goes a long way. I know of a company that was basically 
getting a 3 x T-1 pushed its way because AT&T wanted to sell it to them. 
Wow, for only $700 per month you can have 4.5 Megabits per second. We 
told them go ask about Fiber. By going through a reseller, they were 
able to get AT&T to install a 10 meg x 10 meg fiber connection for $973 
per month. Of course the equipment is 100 meg port and they are actually 
getting about 20 + meg both directions, and are VERY happy with this 
arrangement. Of course if The TW Telecom rep had actually wanted to sell 
the product, they could have had 100 meg over fiber to their site for 
about $1400 per month. The fiber is literally in the street outside 
their building, but the TW Telecom guy didn't want to sell it.


A fellow Network Engineer has 1.5 meg / 384 k ADSL to his house. 
According to AT&T's website, for $45 he can get 6 meg / 768 k + 5 static 
IP addresses for $45 per month.  After having AT&T *hang up* on him 3 
times, hes has decided to drop AT&T and look at other alternatives.

Why do you think car dealers let you have a test drive?

I used to tell my DSL ISP's to put the fastest PC in the store hooked up 
to DSL and let poeple play with it. Once they see how fast it is they 
will move to it.  The concept works with Wireless, Wi-Fi, and VoIP, too.

Thanks for your message. Very helpful! I guessed that my ILEC (Verizon)
would have the list of leased lines, but also that they'd be the most
reluctant. Getting on the radio might not be too hard since we're
replacing leased lines for a large broadcaster. The question once that
equipment is up is: who else can we hit? Seems like we (which is mostly
me at this point) will get further a lot faster by concentrating on a
few high-profit customers rather than myriad low-profit subscribers.
And I know cold-calling is the way, but I would really like to get all
these addresses into a RF-GIS system so I know who's around first.

You can lease such a detailed list from Harte-Hanks.
It will cost about $2 per lead, but it will be detailed.

You can get lists of new businesses from your Secretary of State's office.

Property lists are public record. Some are online; some you have to go 
to the Appraisor's office.

Hi Dylan,

  Marketing practices depend on your business model and your
customers.  If you can only reach a few entities, it's usually best to
go directly to them with your pitch.  If you want widespread
publicity, more traditional channels are usually most efficient:
Radio, TV, billboards, etc.  If you're creative you can probably come
up with ways to get into this type of media very inexpensively.
Others have been successful with door-knob hangers.

  Obviously, your ILEC has the all the voice/data circuit information
you could ever want, but I have a feeling that they will sell you
their fiber routes before they sell you their customer list.

  You can get business records from infousa.com.  Most libraries have
a subscription.  Check with them before using it for commercial
purposes.  One of the columns the data has is number of computers.
It's probably not that accurate, but it may be better than nothing.

The IRS does not collect property taxes, local municipalities do.
Check your city's assessor's office.  It looks like Spring Green
farmed it out to: Krueger Appraisals, LLC/Greg Grandprey 608-837-6005.
 They may be able to give you the data on CD.  Note that the building
owner is not necessarily the business owner.

interested in obtaining a list of addresses of all businesses within
say a 150-mile radius of Spring Green, WI. What I really want is a list
of every entity leasing T1s or greater! Somehow I doubt that this
information will be easy to come by. I'm willing to work at this, and
am happy to rip apart / cobble together sundry databases. I heard that
one could obtain property tax records from the IRS, but haven't found
anything on this most promising claim.
