I think ATT and Verizon are facing considerable bleeding from the 
growing segment of the population who are dropping the land lines and 
going strictly wireless phone service (like me). Getting them into a DSL 
contract makes them keep their land line for another year (or pay a $200 
early disconnect fee). The $12.99 probably also requires that they get 
Callwaiting, CallerID, overpriced longdistance, etc etc etc. so its 
probably closer to $40/mo anyway.


In some markets, I understand that the phone company can get up to 
$100/mo subsidy from the USF "free money" fund. Another reason to lock 
you into another year of using the copper.

Remember "free" dialup? I thought I was going to be SO broke. I had a 
quarter million $ worth of leases on modem pools and was charging $20 
and thought I was going to have a heart attack when K-Mart's 
bluelight.net free dialup came to my town. Guess what, only one person 
switched to them and they came back in a month. I still get the $20 per 
account and I still get new customers and people coming back to me from 
other "cheap" dialup providers to this day. The broadband business is 
exactly the same deal. The lesson learned is this. Charge what you need 
to to make a profit and build your business. Do not let the price 
gouging change your business plan. Your plan should still work if it was 
a good plan to begin with. Track your customer movements. When they 
leave ask therm why. When they join ask them why. Write it down. Look at 
these once a week and see what works and what does not. If less than 5 % 
of your customers are leaving for a cheaper service then this is not a 
factor to even consider.

Peter,

You made an EXCELLENT point. The reason an ISP has a low number of 
subscribers is rarely because the sell price. Providers just assume that 
when they aren't growing fast, and are aware of lower priced competitors. 
Marketing is a much bigger factor to determine rate of customer growth. When 
I say marketing, I do not mean jsut advertising, I mean a unique way to 
QUICKLY get access to prospects, and an existing relationship to leverage.


Comcast doesn't needto build a relationship, they already have it, providing 
them video. They already have customer info in their data base, and a 
payment history and a bill going to them every month, to consider.  Its as 
easy as having the billing software add a line to the bill, check this 
checkbox on form and include when sending payment, and broadband will 
automatically be isntalled. Or answer the phone, "I'm glad we've solved your 
video problem, however are you a ware of our broadband service yet, I see 
you have not subscribed, did you know you could get rid of other monthly 
bills and get a discount price on your Video services this month, with as 
little as two minutes of your time, As a valued custoemr, I'd like to save 
you money, Let me transfer you".  Its easy when you already own the customer 
and the cable. Computers scare people, the process is jsut easier to get 
from their existing provider, when thrown at them.


Comming in from the outside without a relationship in place, without a cable 
in place, at a disadvantage,  its a challenge to justify to a prospect why 
they should take time to be bothered with details and lengthly installs of 
trying something new, that they don'treally understand in the first place. 
These are the barriers that prevent rapid penetration of consumer 
residential markets.  To tackle these barriers take time, and that takes 
money. Something the competitors are not having to spend to offer $15 DSL. 
Heck, the TV news, is advertising the price drop for the providers, as 
public interest.


The answer is to find people with problems, because they need you to call 
them and help them, when you do that its not about the price, its about 
needing a solution and giving them peice of mind.  One way of doing this is 
to go after underserved areas.  I recently found my biggest client ever, 2 
miles from my office, when he signed up he explained, he had been searching 
for a provider for 4 years, but no matter how hard he tried he was unable to 
find an alternative solution. He was excited when he learned we could help 
him and a local company. Note: we had been offering wireless in his area for 
5 years.  Price wasn't his concern, he just needed someone that could help 
him.

What Cox had done in my market is start giving away Basic cable FREE with 
broadband for $19 a month for first 6 months.
It all boils down to the wire. ONce its there everything else is jsut gravy 
on top, if there is no obligation to support it. What will be interesting is 
to see how happy consumers are in a year accepting $12 a month DSL.  ALL 
lounden county residents did is complaint about how bad Adelphia was service 
wise, but they always forget to realize that they had agreed to prices as 
low as $10 per subscriber in bulk deals for communities.  When you charged 
$10 for a service everyone else had tro charge $30 for, something had to go.


Price keeps going down, but old problems haven't gotten solved to allow the 
lower prices. Well except maybe more fiber transit connections of higher 
capacity.


What wrong with that picture?

You can't compete on price. You will never win. AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, 
etc. don't have to make money on internet services right now they 
can stand to drop millions each year, until things settle down (10 years 
from now?).


We have CableOne and Qwest in our market. We are still doing $40 per 
month for 512k service and $50 per month for 1meg service. We will never 
have the number of customers that the big guys have, but we provide 
local support, employ local people, and have great customer service. In 
our coverage area, we have less than 2% of the market (based on total 
population). I would be totally thrilled to get to 3%.
