I'll second the TextMate goodness. It's all I've used since late 2004
(and I haven't had to pay for a single upgrade since then), and the
awesomeness of bundles means that as stuff like jquery became trendy,
bundles were released to work with it. So, no waiting for some vendor

It has

full syntax highlighting but it's real power comes with snippets, code
blocks you can program yourself.

Dreamweaver also has a Snippets panel with built in snippets and you can
easily create your own in whatever category you wish and store them there,
whether it be CSS snippets, javascript or server language code snippets.
Beyond that, you can create behaviors and commands for javascript code and
server behaviors for programming code, either packaging them as an MXP for
portability or leave as behaviors for local use.

Many users don't realize, but it's extendible out the wazoo.

If your server is already specifying the character set (a.k.a. encoding)
 then you don't
need to do so in your HTML. In fact, I'd recommend against doing so, ...

for example, when the page is saved for viewing later. (The hard drive
  does not send HTTP headers.)

That's a good point that I should have mentioned, and I'm glad you
brought it up. However, IMO this need is often overstated. Browsers
are pretty good at guessing the encoding when they need to. I wouldn't
rely on browsers guessing correctly for public pages, but I think the
clutter of having duplicate encoding declarations usually outweighs
the benefit.

Of course, ideally one looks at one's pages using a local Web server.
I think Windows Linux come with one preinstalled and I know that OS
X does, so this should be within the reach of most folks.

Re: [WSG] Dreamweaver8

2008-04-06 Thread Nancy Gill

Hi Kate:

Adobe doesn't offer downloads of older versions once a newer version has
come out. The only way I know to get a 30 day trial at this point is to
find a CD with a 30 day trial of it on a Dreamweaver 8 book .. many of them
come with CDs that contain sample files and a trial of the program. Of
course, after the 30 days, the upgrade would be to CS3 so then you would be
back where you started.

Perhaps you could also find one on EBay or in a 3rd party store on clearance
.. be careful especially with the former that it's not a bootlegged copy but
comes with a valid serial.

AFAIK, those are about the only options since DW8 is a version and a half
behind.

Yeah, you can get Dreamweaver 8 on Ebay, but I couldn't find any legal
links for download.
To be honest, I wouldn't use Dreamweaver, I use Aptana Studio and from
the coding side it works great and it's free.

The latest version of Dreamweaver - Dreamweaver 8 - has been launched today.
I was lucky enough to be involved with the Beta and so have been working
with this new version for several months. So, is it worth the upgrade?

Now, where did I put those mags :D

The biggest reason to upgrade would be Spry. Other than that .. there
wasn't a lot in the CS3 version other than some CSS stuff and a few
improvements here and there.

RE: [WSG] Dreamweaver8

2008-04-06 Thread Tim MacKay
Hi,

I would recommend Aptana Studio as well for hand coding. I just downloaded
it and so far its great. Although one thing I miss about dreamweaver is that
you can do a 'search all' and get a list of all instances of the thing you
are searching for rather than cycling through a 'find...find...find...'
list. So far it's the only program I've used that does that and I really
notice not having it.

HTH,

Tim
