Re: [WSG] A little help with a charity site please

Title: Re: [WSG] A little help with a charity site please

Hi Taco

Currently you have 6 images that make up the banner section of you page (these images except for the logo are just for decoration) I would make this 1 large image and then place the navigation etc.. Over the top of it – this will give you more flexibility and reduce the need for having images that don’t really have any semantic meaning in the mark-up.

Thanks Patrick
So many tables I've seen have been marked up that way, I just assumed it to

Hi Seona

Mac Ie5 is having a real problem with the #mainNav ul {position: absolute}
change this to float left and it should fix everything up.

This shouldn't affect any other browsers.

It's only happening in Mac IE, anyway instead of having the Lis float left,
change it to 'display: inline' and this fixes the problem.

Re: [WSG] innerHTML and javascript

2005-02-23 Thread Jeff Lowder - Accessibility 1st
Hi Alan

I doubt it, even though it is probable the fastest method, it goes against
the node-centric ways of the W3C DOM.

Even though it isn't in the W3C DOM spec, the browser manufacturers have
still implemented it, so it'll still work cross browser.

Hi Leslie

Your problem occurs when you have the border-top: 0; after the border
statement.

If you take this out, it then works the same as in other browsers, strange I
know.

Hope this helps.

Re: [WSG] IE6 and my sidebar

2005-02-04 Thread Jeff Lowder - Accessibility 1st
Hi Kim

The problems lies in the #content statement in layout.css
If you change margin-left: 30px TO margin: 0 200px 0 30px; & get rid of the
width: 420px; then it'll be more flexible.

Hi - does anyone still use Bobby these days?

I ask because we really have only used:

On a site we are developing we pass all Checklist items up to and
including Priority 3 Verification with Cynthia, however our client is
testing using Bobby and Usablenet, stating these are the 'industry
standard'.

Is this the case? If not could anyone hit me with a nice list objective
comparison?

Thanks

just a quick question, is the below
the correct markup for a transitional XHTML document?

I thought the meta http-equiv was text/xhtml, so I've
lost confidence in the rest of the code being correct also.

Thanks a lot! Sorry to always be the one with the

That's fine Lindsay, but I'm citing what is covered in the W3C
guidelines regarding this: http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#C_9

And as I stated in my response to Kay, if you're able to set the header
information and be sure it will always stay that way, then by all means
don't put in the meta-tag.

Correct. There is no need to specify a content-type meta tag in your
HTML if your webserver is sending the correct HTTP headers, as seoed.com
seems to be doing:
Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-2

is exactly what it sounds like: an equivalent to a
HTTP header

/me thinks about doing a WSG HTTP presentation for about the 1000th time

W3C XHTML Spec C.9. - "If a document is to be served as multiple media
types, the HTTP server must be used to set the encoding of the
document."

If you are working on an Intranet or Dedicated web-server then I would
say you shouldn't have to worry about it too much, but if you're on a
shared web server (as most people on this list would be) then I would
definitely include a Content Type meta-tag as this will ensure the user
agent recognises any character encoding, and the text is rendered
correctly.

Isn't this only an issue if your server is not sending the encoding in
the
headers? I've been removing this as unnecessary code bloat seeing as our
server is configured correctly. If that's not the case I'd better start
putting them back!

2004-06-08 Thread Jeff Lowder - Accessibility 1st
Hi Razvan
I'd only pick up 2 thinks to include:
1.
- or another appropriate character set.
2. "Skip links" link - to main content.

Other than a few things outlined by other people i.e. font-size in ems
or % and more contrast in colors (navigation etc...) I think it's great.

Well done.

RE: [WSG] new window losing it's anchor place

Title: RE: [WSG] new window losing it's anchor place

Hi Wendy

1. Where is #how_work on the page?

2. You should also add onkeypress="window.open(this.href, 'popupwindow', 'toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=300,height=300'); return false;" just to make sure it's available via keyboard only.

I'm using the recommended accessible way to open a new browser window (yes, I know but it's an elearning module and we have to link out to internal content so learners can view reference material without losing their place, plus they are quite used to this method).

However, I'm finding that if the window is opened small to an anchor on the opened page, when the window is resized, the content in the window changes to another section of the page - about a half page worth downwards

http://www.cdn.telstra.com.au/cc-foss/url/1product/isdn2blcomplete.htm#how_work" 'popupwindow', 'toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=300,height=300'); return false;">

any fixes welcome...

RE: [WSG] Site breaking in Mozilla

2004-06-06 Thread Jeff Lowder - Accessibility 1st

I’d recommend against using
Image replacement in this instance as the only time it’ll be semantically
correct to have the header as the H1 element would be the homepage of the site.

e.g. on the news page - <h2>News Page - Style 2h2> really should be:<h1>News Page - Style 2h1>

So I’d just put the header image
directly into the page with alt text.

i.e.

    <img src="index_files/logo_banner.jpg"
width="600" height="100" alt="Texas Dental Hygienists'
Association" />

Then, for all other pages except for
the homepage do this:

    <img
src="index_files/logo_banner.jpg"
width="600" height="100" alt="Texas Dental Hygienists'
Association" />

Thanks to Jeff and Kay, I have been
able to clean up the site and code quite

a bit. Unfortunately,
there are a couple of things that I cannot seem to get

a grasp on conceptually:

1. I don't understand why Mozilla is dropping the header down about 20px. I

don't have either padding or
margins in either the container or the #top

header.

2. I have been trying to get the
linked text to center vertically over the

state of Texas. I thought that since
the image was inserted as a background

that all I needed was to center vertically, but it does not work.

Thanks again,

Great idea, but i can't get it to work -

Have tried

window.document.childNodes[0].nodeValue =
'

"-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" \n

"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">';

and similar in ie6, but the document stays in quirks
mode.

Any ideas or working examples of a doctype change?

Also other browsers are returning the html tag not the
doctype as the

first node in the document.

With regard to the DOCTYPE, you could use a DOM script to re-write it,
if you like (I'd be wary though - you might end up with more in-valid
pages than not).

I would first start with whatever the CMS can output easily (least
work), if that's HTML 4.0 then go with that - as this is still a
completely valid DOCTYPE - you don't necessarily have to go with XHTML
strict.

HTML 4.01 STRICT might actually be a better/easier way to go anyway.

Whatever DOCTYPE you use - just make sure it's a valid one, i.e.

Hi,

I've been engaged to produce some standards compliant xhtml templates
for a largish website for a legal firm.
The programming and backend is being handled by another company - at
the clients request they are using the 'Lotus Workplace Web Content
Management' system (nee Aptrix) which is being integrated/built on top
of Lotus Domino.

It turns out that Domino can only generate the following html 4 doctype
with no url -

Found some confirmation of this here:
http://www.notestips.com/80256B3A007F2692/1/TAIO-5V5LQN
http://www.notestips.com/80256b3a007f2692/1/taio-5v73sc

Which puts ie into quirks mode, and doesn't let me write xthml strict
either - obviously not a good thing when the site needs to be.

Panic ensues.

Anyone else come across this and have and advice/reliable hacks?

Cheers,
Matt

The discussion about validating forms led me to download the DOM
Level 1 spec again from the W3C, and after a moment or two I
remembered why I'd scrubbed it off my disc the last time. It was
either that or grab my Uzi and hunt down the people who wrote that spec.

Right now I'm dependent on the kindness of strangers (the folks who
wrote Opera's and Moz's JavaScript and DOM engines) for accepting
some really evil code. Does anybody know a good DOM tutorial?

Subject: [WSG] hiding styles from Mac IE5 : how to?

Hi all

Having some problems with a site that is crashing IE5 on the Mac (OS8 to

X). The code is moving towards HTML4 compliance with only a few
character errors, tag ends i.e ">" instead of " />"' , and one id clash

left to fix.

I tested the site and it works perfectly on :
IE5.5, 6 for Windows.
The Geckos (Netscape 7, Mozilla, Camino, FF)
Safari
Opera 7.0 - 7.5 on all OS's

partial (content readable) on IE5.0 for Win.

I have borrowed an old Mac OS9 fliptop/frisbee and will do some testing
on Monday - i came across this site
http://www.l-c-n.com/IE5tests/hiding/ while googling and am thinking of
employing this method. Given that the site is usable for
of users I'm not prepared to invest the time in hacking a stylesheet so
that one browser that MS doesn't make any more is okwith the risk of

breaking it for the above browsers. Unfortunately IE5 on OS9 is the only

browser for this OS (apart from some older Mozilla's like 1.01)

I'd rather hide styles which I know is the problem so has anyone had any

experience with the single quote @import method in the above link?. I
guess it'll hide em for NN4 as well.

If you want to have a look at the site in IE5 on the Mac I can send a
link off list.

Cheers
James
