Hi,
In the following code, I've been unsuccessful aligning the submit
button flush with the top of the UA. Would some one correct the boggle.

[WSG] Divs or Cells

2004-09-02 Thread Wasabi
Hi,
If this is off-topic, please reply directly.
  a client with an international market needs a site redesign. The
currently use tables, but would like a transition to CSS. My concern is
their market, an international base of travelers on various platforms
with varying skill levels.

   I'm reluctant to do a full CSS redesign, fearing someone will try to
access the site from a PDA while on foto safari in the outback. Would a
well crafted, minimal table solution, i.e Designing With Web Standards,
fit the bill; or is CSS 2 penetration enough to ensure seamless
integration, as much as can be expected, for the diverse client base?

Chris

Re: [WSG] Valid Flash state of play

2004-08-18 Thread Wasabi
Hi,
This is for embedding quicktime, but it may put you on to something.
http://realdev1.realise.com/rossa/rendertest/quicktime.html
And flash doesn't work with plug-in's and this doesn't work, without
that.. Six in one hand half-dozen in the other. The aforementioned
method may be slight of hand, but I've yet to encounter a situation
where it has failed. Several large FLASH/XHTML/CSS firms use this
method, so until I can find a concrete solution, I'll have to go with
it. Thanks for your insight, it did inspire me to keep looking for a
more tangible solution.

tricking the validator and still supplying invalid code to the

[WSG] Form labels

2004-08-16 Thread Wasabi
Hi,
After completing a form with labels, as suggested in a usability
guideline I noticed firefox choked on them. None of the text fields
would populate until I removed the labels from them. Could some one
point me to a specification on proper implementation of labels.

Hey Wasabi,
Well, the layout is tight - I guess your trying to make it a fixed
width
layout that will work in a 600*480...
Which Personally - I think is Overkill re: support...

Anyone with that low resolution will be very used to their friend the
horizontal scroll bar.
The tabs look a lot like www.experts-exchange.com just not blue...
Personally - I think the logo could be more - especially when below
the
fold there are a lot of images.
the title is kind of drowned out and looks forgotten.

The layout does look craped.
It ends up being very empty at the top...
and then all of a sudden a huge block of text, in a tiny box in the
middle...
then lots of empty room below again.
Also your CSS doesnt validate 100%...
you need a default font or two (serif/san-serif)...
love the old pictures and the diner look.
hope my response can help you.
:)
great job!

Re: [WSG] Are wireframes necessary when using web standards?

2004-08-06 Thread Wasabi
Hi,
Perhaps wireframes make more sense if you think of them as blueprints,
or perhaps a sketch in the design process. I often use pencil sketches
complete with color void of content when laying out a new site. I also
use this approach with colored div's with just a text description of
intended content, following the advice of Russ Weakley, when laying out
a css design.

Nancy,
Wireframe more often is used to refer to outlined page designs. I.e. a

They are a way to start visualising the design of a page and how all
the
elements will fit together, but are by no means a final design.

// A day later I finished a working prototype of the website
// in question.
//
// The client is happy but another producer has been quite
// vocal with his
//
// opinion that the prototype was built too early.
//
// From my perspective, a prototype has more value than

// standards make development much more rapid, so we can

//
//  What do you think?
//
// Here's my take.
//
// I think wireframes are a great first step in developing a
// site with a
// complex user flow. I'll often literally just sketch them on
// paper. They
// take no time at all and are very easy to change. Because they are
// rough, people don't get too attached to them as well, which
// is a bonus.
//
// If I'm creating slightly more polished wireframes I'll do them in
// Freehand. I've all the widgets and templates created, so I
// can knock a
// batch of wireframes up very quickly. I can annotate them myself with
// instructions or print them out and have people scribble on them with
// suggestions. All very useful.
//
// I can then hand them over to the client and they can sign
// each one off.
// This forces the client to understand and take responsibility
// for each
// wireframe and the signed off wireframes become part of our project
// spec.
//
// HTML prototypes can be extremely useful as they give you and
// the client
// a real understanding of the user flow. It's fine looking through a
// batch of wireframes, but nothing gives you the feel of a
// website like,
// er, a website.
//
// However I think you have to be a particularly gifted developer to be
// able to knock up a half descent HTML template in anything
// near the time
// it takes to create one in Freehand (or the graphics package of your
// choice).
//
// Also for the HTML template to be as flexible as it's paper
// equivalent
// you really do need some mechanism for adding
// notes/instructions (like a
// div that you can toggle on and off) and allowing the client
// to comment
// and sign them off. Obviously as they are HTML there is no
// way you can
// really include them in your spec.
//
// The other big issue is that people get very protective of
// their 'code'.
// I could see it being very tempting not to change something on a
// wireframe because it's a 'hassle' rather than for any strategic
// reasons. also their is the temptation to try and cut corners
// and turn
// your prototype into the real thing. Never a good idea in my
// book, as,
// by definition, a prototype is a rough, rushed version of what you
// actually want to build.
//
// My position them would be to always wireframe and to build
// prototypes
// when you have the time/budget.
