Well I finally got everything reinstalled, and it works fine now, the maps
are being cached and not deleted.
I think I did something wrong last install.

I tried my GlobalSat BU-353 on Mint Maya. I had to install gpsd
to get xgsp to show sats and position. Xastir is broken on my
system, so I couldn't positively confirm it will work with
Xastir. It does work with gpsd, so if Xastir uses gpsd, then
this GPS should work. It is on the hardware list
When I installed aprsdroid on my tablet there was a version that could use
offline OSM maps and that's what I installed. I was wondering if the same map
file could be used in xastir. It is around 2.4 gig in size but I don't know
what format it is. The aprsdroid website has been down for awhile

See the other thread today talking about Shapefile maps for Xastir.
Find some ESRI Shapefile extracts from the OSM data and use that.
Create a custom dbfawk file for xastir to get the labels displaying to
your liking.

They have both. However, depending on how the the files are created,
you may have to create a dbfawk file to go with them so the labels
appear, or appear as you like. Dbfawk files are specific to Xastir.
There are several on here who could help you with that part, assuming
you have some time
Yea, so that's showing your grep command was running. If soundmodem
was running there would have been another line.
You'll need to start up Soundmodem separately before starting Xastir.

Is the soundmodem process running? Xastir won't start it for you. Btw,
though soundmodem still works, it's been abandoned for years. You'll
have much better luck with Direwolf in the long run as it supports
multi-bit error correction and is under active development.

FYI: I wouldn't use cached maps for an event. Too much can go wrong.
Use Shapefile extracts if you want to use OSM maps. Find links to
extracts here:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Shapefiles
For instance, I can get a Shapefile extract for WA state here:

Did the chmod command come back with any errors when you ran it sudo?
The hard fail on the interface means that either something else
already has the port, or that the user/group/permissions on the port
aren't sufficient for you to access it. On my boxes (OpenSuSE) the
chmod 4755 bit works fine,
I get This page cannot be displayed when I try it. Is it working for you?

I just installed sound modem because there was some documentation. If there
