virt-manager is a rather basic interface on Xen. convirt is a much more ambitious project to produce something more like xencenter on citrix xenserver or the virtualiron interface. the point being that mane things are simplified on multiple server deployments and migrate those servers between host servers. After struggling with ConVirt I decided to use the built in tools in CentOS 5.2, virt-manager, virt-clone and virt-install and found their use to be straight forward and easy to understand and use. Once I built a basic CentOS 5.2 guest, it was easy to clone, make unique guests and put into production. Once I found I could put a soft-link in the /etc/xen/auto directory to guests that I want booted with the host, I was able to put a couple of guests into production. What issues/problems is ConVirt trying to address that are not covered by Virtual Machine Manager (www.virt-manager.org) tools built into CentOS? There are two things .. probably getting confused here... The Image : You pick an image and provision it. The VM : After the provisioning opertaion, you get a VM that can be started etc. -- to fix an already provisioned VM : Select the VM right mouse click and "Edit VM Settings" Select the disk entry with /dev/cdrom Click properties button change from /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc press ok. Start the VM -- To fix the CentOS_5_2 image (generated from prev suggestion) - Select image - Right mouse click and choose "Edit Settings" - select the disk with /dev/cdrom, click properties, change /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc, press ok. - save the image by pressing ok on the settings dialog. - Provision a new VM. - The new VM should recognize the DVD rom.
