I figured out what I wanted...
X automatically creates a virtual screen when you use a resolution
smaller than the maximum one available. So, if your modes are:
1024x768 800x600
and you use the 800x600 resolution, X will give you a virtual screen,
even if you have disabled it.
Now, is
FWIW, I was having screen resolutions on my laptop, and it turned out to
be my fault. Somewhere I'd gotten the idea that my laptop's LCD
resolution os 1400x1050, but in truth it's 1440x900.
Just something worth double checking, imho.

I believe X creates a virtual screen when you don't list your highest
resolutions first. Just make sure your resolutions are going from highest
to lowest, and delete all those up until your preferred one is first in
the list.

It should work with the nv driver that comes with XFree86 4.3.
Alternatively, NVIDIA has binary Linux drivers that should work
with XFree86 versions back to 4.0.1.

It is XFree86 v. 4.3, all the rpm's end in i586. Mandrake 9.1 requires at
least a Pentuim to run and I am using their install CD's so I assume that it
should be good to go. I installed an older Trident video card and X was
able to configure, load and run correctly.

No, it is a desktop PC. Athlon, KT133A and a GeForce2/MX. I'm pretty sure
it's an X11/nvidia problem, because if I switch out to a text console and let
it use DPMS to blank there it works perfectly every time.

I had a similar problem getting dual-head going with a GF2/MX and an S3 Trio
64V+, and it was because acceleration wouldn't work on both video cards at
the same time. The solution was to disable acceleration on one of the cards
and that fixed the problem. (Option NoAccel I think...)
