I think you need to explain your situation better. The file URL is
effectively a symlink. Since a symlink is a file system feature I
don't see any way of have a literal symlink. And I completely don't
understand your comment about counting hard disk space twice. A
hyperlink is just that, a link. It's not a copy of your file.

I know that symlink is just a link, but it seems that Youjimbo does
not do it by default. It you drag a file to the Yojimbo it will be
copied to the Yojimbo database. In this case you have the same file
twice on you hard disk right? Have you ever seen SOHO Notes app? In
that app you can store symlinks not a raw files and then you have two
pros: 1. You do not count you HDD space twice, 2. When your program
database crashed or developer say that he doesn't want to develop this
app anymore, you have your real file somewhere on the disk.
I am just lookin for application which help you organize your digital
life, but I would like to avaid as much as possible some prioprietary
database format risk in the future.

I don't know about help or the manual, but select some text in a

Hmm, I just typed 'hyperlink' into the help search and got a
hit. OK, that's just a reference to the menu item. Would
probably be a good idea for the manual to have more info, such
as text needs to be selected first. Send a note to BBSW and
suggest the change.

Backing up Yojimbo to JungleDisk Plus (or Rsync)

2008-04-09 Thread Doug Ransom
Does anyone know how effective the block-level file updates described
in the Jungle Disk docs (below) will work with Yojimbo database?

From http://www.jungledisk.com/plus.shtml

Jungle Disk Plus Frequently Asked Questions

What are block-level file updates?
When updating existing files, Amazon S3 requires you to upload the
entire file rather than just the changed portions.
For large files, this can mean gigabytes of uploads for only a few
kilobytes of changes. Uploading the unchanged data takes time and also
costs money, as Amazon charges for each gigabyte uploaded.
The block-level update feature of Jungle Disk Plus allows you to
upload only the changed portions of large files, saving time and
bandwidth.
Jungle Disk Plus uses a technique similar to rsync to detect the
changed parts of a file and upload only those changed parts to the
Jungle Disk Plus server, which then combines the changes with the
original file to update your file.
Block-level updates are important for backing up large files such as
Outlook PST files, databases, or other files that change regularly by
only by a small amount relative to the overall size of the file.

Re: How to store links in Yojimbo

can anybody explain me how to store symbolic links inside the

case when Yojimbo crash and I need access to my files without Yojimbo?

You _can_ do what you want to do, as others have noted, but I don't
know that you should. To quote one of the Bare Bones Developers:

"We never really intended for Yojimbo to be a replacement for the
Finder or a file manager, but a place to put (and tag/organize/fetch)
things which didn't already have a better place someplace else.
Snippets of information, random web pages, etc."

I confess I've been guilty of trying to make Yojimbo do more than it
was designed to do, but I've learned better.

I suggest you give Leap a look:

I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and really impressed. I
was impressed enough to shell out what I though was an excessive
amount of money to buy it. Think of it as Yojimbo for all of your
files that won't go in Yojimbo. Between Yojimbo and Leap, my file
management needs are covered.

Part of my reason for trying to put everything in Yojimbo was that I
wanted to have one place to go to search for documents. With the
greatly improved spotlight in Leopard, this is not a concern for me
now. I tag files in Leap and in Yojimbo, and I can do a quick
spotlight search to find items in both places.

Krzysztof M. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 08-04-08 15.29

This part of menu is only active when you click inside the note
or highlight some portion of the text inside the note to make
it hyperlinked. So that why I am asking is it any different way
to store file links inside Yojimbo separately not as a pointer
inside the note? For example SOHO Notes does it pretty well.

I don't know if this is what you want to do but ...

+ Create a bookmark in Yojimbo
+ Select the file you want link and drag it to the Location field
+ Add "file://" to the beginning of the location field

(And you could make an applescript that do this so you only drag
& drop on the applescript to get the link)

Yes, me.

Although there may be a slight UI issue as when the search field has
focus the preview text indicating what is being searched is removed,
so as you cycle with the arrow keys there would (currently) be no
indication of what type of search you'd be conducting unless you tab
out of the field to check…

Cycle through Search criteria

2008-04-09 Thread Patrick Gilmour
I have a very small feature request for Yojimbo that I suspect would
be quite popular. Just this:

When I hit F3 in any application it takes me to the Yojimbo search
field.

WIth that field active I want to be able to use the up and down arrow
keys to cycle through: All, Comments, Contents, Label, Name, Tag so I
can refine my search without using the mouse.

Anyone who uses Butler will have seen this. Or Firefox (using Alt
+Arrow on the Search bar - in Beta 3 at least)

Maybe this is already possible through another method. If it is, could
someone please post it?

Would anyone else find this useful?

Pat

It's an external "Viewer", not "Editor".

Any changes made outside of Yojimbo are not returned to Yojimbo.

Services menu it is then, as ever! :-)

2. Since there is no 'make plain text' option, can I just ask will
Yojimbo do horrible things to my BBEdit files when I import them?

Actually, look at the bottom of the Format menu for Remove
Formatting. That will strip all the formatting from text pasted
from rich text environments.

Setting the External Editor

2008-04-09 Thread Carlton Gibson

Hi all,

I'm slowly getting the hang of Yojimbo. I've now discovered the
option to view in an external editor.

This by default is set to TextEdit. This is great for rich text but I
quite fancy using BBEdit.

Thus I have two questions:

1. (How) Is it possible to change the default external editor? (I
searched the preferences, the help and the online FAQ with no luck.)

2. Since there is no 'make plain text' option, can I just ask will
Yojimbo do horrible things to my BBEdit files when I import them?

Thanks
Carlton
