This freaked me out! The show is going to be at the Palace Theater. I grew up in Canton. I only live like 20 minutes away from there now. What I most associate the Palace Theater with is their screenings of movies that not a whole lot of people go see and the times I went there when I was a kid when our class went there on field trips to see a ballet or some stupid crap and the time my mom took me there to see Bambi when I was a wee boy. The only times I can think of that "rock bands" play there, it's usually a 50s revue, an Elvis impersonator and his backup band and 70s AOR/MOR crap that middle aged ladies listen to. So, yeah.. this was a bit of a surprise! I checked out their website to see that this month they're screening "An Inconvenient Truth" and "The Devil and Daniel Johnston". Damn. I guess they're getting a little more artsy and moving up in the world!

2006-07-14 Thread Cal Schenkel
Thanks Stucco!

Question about the group: Is this group mostly just for trading and
are there other yahoo groups with more discussion? I haven't had a
chance to really check out the various Zappa groups since I was more
active a few years ago on aff-z, and that seems to be a lot slower
now.

Hello Milhouse,
To slightly off quote you, the Palace Theatre will soon be hosting a band
that "middle aged men" will be listening to. By the way, it looks like ZPZ
will be at Washington DC (45 miles) the day before HALLOWEEN!

Re: [Zappa-List] Re: FANTASTIC original Cal Schenkel painting CHEAP!!

2006-07-14 Thread jcoonk

This is a discussion group - that shares recordings of FZ, which are not
available thru commercial channels, Calvin.
A couple of years ago, it was discussion only. A few of us started sharing
(vining) some shows, in the hopes that it might generate more discussion... So
we do both, you could say.
AFA other yahoo groups go, activity is spotty (at best), at least with the
discussion groups. I hear there are other groups that specifically trade music,
but I've never been active in any of them, so I shouldn't presume to know what
goes on...
I subscribe to 3 FZ yahoo groups: this one, theBIGnote, and Dinner with the
Gurney's. This one is the most active; theBIGnote is quite active, tho a little
more intimate (fewer members, more personal; almost an FZ Fan Support Group)
than this List; Dinner WTG has the most members, but thanks to a couple of
unfortunate choices by the owner at start up (which cannot be changed without
dissolving the group) it attracts folks more interested in porn than in FZ. No
one has posted anything there in the last 9 months besides me...
www.killuglyradio.com has a
discussion forum, tho' a lot of their activity mirrors ours, in that sharing the
music gets a little more traffic than the discussion end.
I do check all four of these groups once a day, and it keeps me busy
enough.
Oh yeah, there are some other yahoo groups that focus more on certain
sidemen that played for Frank: Flo Eddie, Steve Vai, and Mike Keneally
come to mind; I'm sure there are others.
But we at the List do thrive (okay, maybe not thrive, but do love)
discussing FZ and his music.
If you're amenable, I'd love to hear your take on the two hitchhikers... Or
the early Log Cabin days, with Franzoni the GTO's. One of our members,
WHITE RABBITT, stayed at the place for a few months. I'd also like to get an
idea for you creative process in regards to an FZ album: would Frank come to you
with ideas; did you come up with stuff on your own; etc?
Whatever you'd like to discuss, or not discuss; the List is yours.
I, for one, am glad you're here! And if I weren't so effing financially
destitute I would most certainly take you up on your generous offer. I do have a
signed, CD proof of The Best Band by you (via eBay a few years back), but to
have a larger work at such a steal is a dream!
Any of you Listers out there who can afford it, jump on this deal; it don't
happen often...
Welcome, Calvin.
Warmest Regards,
SOFA - List Owner
