Well, I figured it out. My WEP password was wrong! The software was able to detect the access point, but it was unable to talk to the access point. It turns out that the zd1211 module from sourceforge was necessary; the zd1211 module supplied by Ubuntu was not able to complete the connection.

I just downloaded, compiled, installed the zd1211 module for Ubuntu Linux (kernel 2.6.15-23-686). When I plug in my CompUsa USB device, dmesg shows success. I am able to do the following: ifconfig wlan0 up iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed key MYKEY iwconfig wlan0 shows that all is well: wlan0 8
