Well, I figured it out. My WEP password was wrong! The software was able to
detect the access point, but it was unable to talk to the access point.
It turns out that the zd1211 module from sourceforge was necessary; the
zd1211 module supplied by Ubuntu was not able to complete the connection.

You should check dmesg or your system log for zd1211 related messages.
You need to be associated first before dhclient can get an IP

Thanks for the suggestions. I had already found and killed dhclient3 before
trying
dhclient -d wlan0
I even tried
dhclient -s 192.168.0.1 wlan0
because I know the router is at 192.168.0.1. Still no luck.

Emn, at least on Debian it is called "dhclient". dhcpd is the server, you
want the client.
Thanks

I just downloaded, compiled, installed the zd1211 module for Ubuntu Linux
(kernel 2.6.15-23-686). When I plug in my CompUsa USB device, dmesg shows
success. I am able to do the following:
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed key MYKEY
iwconfig wlan0 shows that all is well:
wlan0 8
