Marc Schindler:

I think you're allowed to take $10,000 (as long as you file)
but ultimately there's a limit, but I don't know what it is.

If the baggage handlers here don't get it, I think the limit is
equal to the amount you are carrying plus $10 at the destination
airport. Most of them call it an entry tax or an airport tax.

And you usually won't get a receipt, but there is no paperwork,
either. [grin]

What if they can prove that they have paid their taxes on it? Are they then permitted
to take whatever amount of money they please. If not, then we are a totalitarian
state indeed.

I believe no country allows their citizens to freely leave the country
will all their possessions - not even the USA.

Citizens of the USA who attempt to leave the country will large amounts
of cash can have that cash confiscated under the tax evasion laws. The
presumption is that they owe income taxes and they are trying to cheat
the government is sufficent evidence to confiscate their cash. I don't
know how often this is done, but it is the law.

Re: [ZION] Exit Visas

2002-09-30 Thread Marc A. Schindler

Actually, while Mark is treating us to his usual dry humour, he's probably right. It
was intended as an anti drug money-laundering measure, but if you take more than
$10,000 out of the US you have to fill out a declaration put out by the US Treasury. I
think you're allowed to take $10,000 (as long as you file) but ultimately there's a
limit, but I don't know what it is.

I believe that there are zero (0) countries with sufficient government resources that
will allow their citizens to freely leave the country with all their possessions. For
example, heaven help you if you try to leave the US after converting all your
possessions to cash and then carry that cash with you. I do hope that you will
someday be allowed to see the light of day again.

You could probably leave, oh, say the Cook Islands with all your cash because the
government can't afford the resources to stop you (assuming that you didn't leave
through an authorized port).

So it sounds like there are zero (0) truly free countries in the world.

Re: [ZION] Exit Visas

2002-09-28 Thread Marc A. Schindler

I think we can fairly assume that all OECD countries fall into this category. Many
third world countries have at least currency restrictions,
which would not be, strictly speaking, being allowed to leave the country with all
their possessions. I found this out the hard way the first
time I visited Egypt. I had about $50 worth of Egyptian currency left and tried to buy
another currency with it only to be told that only
amounts in excess of US$500 worth of Egyptian pounds could be converted for export
(and there's no way I'd spent that much), so I figured, what
the heck, and bought a beautiful brass and copper dish with a picture of Nefertiti on
it in the airport gift shop.
