[1] Guido van Rossum (Google) is the inventor of Python and has managed
its growth and development for more than a decade. Guido was
awarded the Free Software Foundation Award in 2002 and Dr.Dobb's
1999 Excellence in Programming Award. Guido works at Google and
spends half of his time on Python.

[2] Jim Hugunin (Microsoft) is the creator of numerous innovations that
take Python into new application domains. Jim's most recent project,
IronPython integrates Python into Microsoft's .NET runtime. Jim's
previous project, Jython is Python for the Java runtime and was the
second production-quality implementation of Python. Before that,
Jim's Numeric Python adapted Python to the needs of number crunching
applications. Jim works at Microsoft adapting the .NET runtime to
the needs of dynamic languages like Python.

[3] Ian Cavén is the primary developer of the Lowry Digital Images
motion picture restoration system. This Python and Zope-based system
has been used to restore over 150 motion pictures. Highlights
include Citizen Kane, Sunset Boulevard and both the Indiana Jones
and Star Wars trilogies. While Ian was Chief Scientist at Lowry
Digital, his rack of computers grew from a few Macintoshes on his
desktop to over six hundred Macintosh and Linux servers - at
one point earning Lowry the title as the second biggest installation
of parallel processing Maintoshes in the world. In 2005, Lowry
Digital Images was acquired by DTS (the famous movie audio company)
and renamed DTS Digital Images. The motion picture restoration
system has been discussed in publications as diverse as IEEE
Spectrum, USA Today, the BBC NEWS, the New York Times and Apple.com.
Ian has been a Python enthusiast since 1999.

Hi all. Don't forget tomorrow's ZPUG meeting. If you plan to
attend, an email to me tonight or tomorrow morning would be
appreciated, but is not necessary.

- Chris McDonough will talk about meld3, a Python HTML/XML templating
system in the spirit of PyMeld and other 'push-based' templating
systems. (http://www.plope.com/software/meld3).

- Tres Seaver will present Using memcached in Python and Zope,
including a demo of using his 'mcdutils' product to do shared session
management in Zope.

- good snacks.

Thanks!

If you need monkey patching I don't see why the framework should help you.
This should be extremely rare occurences with big comments, not use of a
magic 'methods' class attribute.

[Zope-dev] How do I get involved in volunteering?

2006-06-13 Thread Christopher Lozinski

I am interested in volunteering, but I am somewhat lost.

And I say that even though I have been developing in Zope for years, and
reading this email list avidly for a year.

I think that I am going to go and buy and read the Zope 3 book. Beyond
that I do not know what to do.

The problem is that I have no idea what direction Zope 2 is taking.

Although I have poked around on the web, I do not get Zope 3.

The Zope 3 class seems a bit expensive, for those of us who are
self-unemployed and who want to volunteer on Zope 2.

I would love to read an architectural document, if it exists. If not
maybe I could write it.

It would start off by describing the different target markets and
competing products. It would then define the requirements for those
target markets, and it would finish by describing the architecture for
zope 2 and 3 that meets those target markets.

Of course that is the reverse of how it actually happened, but it sure
makes a good story.

I even think that in the process of creating such a high level view of
this industry, I might come up with an additional market or two, and an
additional architecture for Zope n to meet the requirements for that
market.
For example, I know that I like ZClasses and versionning, and they are
not part of the plan.

Then I could figure out how Zope development figures in with my product
plans, and could figure out the best place to apply my energies.

Maybe there is a internal group of zope 2 developers who have these
conversations and who know which way things are going. Maybe no one
knows, and as changes get delivered, they get approved.

I am not even sure who is in charge of approving the cvs changes, and
who is allowed to contribute to the cvs. Is there a list of the
annointed high priests somewhere? Who annoints the approved code?

Maybe there is a trade show where all the key players show up once a year.

I think in the Plone world, at least there are the two key players, and
then the board, so there is some visible structure. In the Zope world
it is not so clear.

So here are my questions. How does one get involved?Who is in
charge? Who approves cvs submissions? What is the target architecture?
What are the target markets?

Regards
Chris

Nobody / everybody. i.e. there's no formal process, but

You're right. This only because I haven't managed to get off 2.8
on any of my projects, so I just never see these warnings.

The reason I haven't been able to make it off 2.8 is due mostly to
other deprecation/feature addition aggressiveness that has taken
place in 2.9 and on the HEAD. Us plain old folks just can't keep up.

I really wouldn't at all mind releasing a patched EE if the thing
being deprecated was worth deprecating. But IMO this was a bad
deprecation, and we should just un-deprecate it.

FWIW I patched EE's trunk on svn.zope.org.

If we don't remove things at some point, there's no point in doing
deprecation warnings.

I think the deprecation shouldn't have been done in the first
place. This is only about methods not about __ac_permissions__
and so on that have warnings in the file.

We can push it back to Zope 2.11... Actually I really don't care,
I've patched EE.

Or we can just pretend we never deprecated 'methods', remove the
warning, and get on with it; no harm, no foul.

Then the framework never gets cleaned up.

OK, I guess I might come up with another tool that _just_ supports
syncing python scripts and page templates to disk but without the need

Nothing says you can't use the framework without the tool. See for

You need to run Zope with the same Python as you compiled it with;
in this case, it looks as though the Python you compiled with uses UCS4
for unicode, but the one you are running with uses UCS2.

You can pass the preferred Python to 'configure', e.g.:

  $ cd /tmp/Zope-2.9.2

Not out of the box.

But these warnings are symptoms of a problem: you should really
upgrade CMF though, which fixes those.

Florent

I get these messages on fields too, under Five for zope3 classes:

2006-06-13 17:49:52 WARNING Init Class cpsskins.standard.ds.html.HTML
has a security declaration for nonexistent method 'html'

with:

class IHTML(Interface):
   Plain HTML

   title=_(uHTML),
   description=_(uPlain HTML content.),
   required=False,
   )

class HTML(object):
   Plain HTML content

   implements(IHTML)

it seems that zope2 believes that these are methods.

Actually, there is a way, but it's a bit heavy-handed and imprecise.
In zope.conf, do (untested):

warnfilter
 action ignore
message .*has a security declaration for.*
/warnfilter

Here's the ZConfig schema description of the warnfilter element:

  multisection type=warnfilter attribute=warnfilters name=*
dataype=zLOG.warn_filter_handler
!-- from zLOG --
description
A multisection which allows a user to set up a Python warning
filter.

The following keys are valid within a warnfilter section:

action: one of the following strings:

error turn matching warnings into exceptions
   ignore never print matching warnings
   always always print matching warnings
default print the first occurrence of matching warnings
for each location where the warning is issued
module print the first occurrence of matching warnings
for each module where the warning is issued
onceprint only the first occurrence of matching
 warnings, regardless of location

message: a string containing a regular expression that the
warning message must match (the match is compiled to
always be case-insensitive)

category: a Python dotted-path classname (must be a subclass of
Warning) of which the warning category must be a
subclass in

order to match

module: a string containing a regular expression that the
module name must match (the match is compiled to be
case-sensitive)

lineno: an integer that the line number where the warning
occurred must match, or 0 to match all line numbers
/description
  /multisection

Indeed they are logging.getLogger(Init) calls (from App/
class_init.py).

Why change that? They're perfectly fine in the event log.

Re: [Zope] Re: filter messages at startup

2006-06-13 Thread Chris McDonough

I suppose a log call is fine.

I *really* like these messages, because they catch a lot of my own
boneheaded security declaration errors. But for ones that aren't
actually real problems (like the ones shown by the OP), it would be
nice to be able to filter them away at startup, especially when
starting in the foreground or running zopectl debug or zopectl
test. Making these into actual warnings.warn calls would let us do
that with a warnfilter, but any other solution would be fine as well.

Not off-topic but totally unrelated. Ajax is client-side thing and file
uploads are handled on the server. Both are common used techniques in the
Zope country...what is your *real* problem? Please don't post any metq
questions like has anybody done xxx - the answer is usually YES.
Being more specific would be helpful.

Thanks,
Andreas
