I believe it is the case that, for a new versions of a library, that
entries are always added to the end of a library, so you may use a new
library in place of the old. (Obviously, this doesn't apply to changes
like moving from a.out to ELF format.) I have frequently created a link
with the right name that points to a newer library, and nothing seems to
go wrong, go wrong. go wrong....
