I believe you need the compat-glibc libraries installed.
I have compat-glibc-6.2-2.1.3.2
You should find the package on your install CDs.
To enable the java support, you'll need a functional java package 
installed. I installed suns jre-1.3. If you don't want java support, I 
think you can set NO JVM when asked for the location of java during the 
install.
It's been a while since I installed staroffice, and as usual, I have no 
notes on how I accomplished it. :)
