Odds are likely that somewhere somehow you're running a Bourne shell script which is trying to dereference something (don't ask what) using a percent sign. You see this frequently when you try to build mandrake rpms on RH systems, because they have additional macro definitions which RH does not supply. The RPM macros are deref'd using percent. You need to tell us more and also to say set -x at the top of whatever script you are running that is manifesting the problem.
