It was sunny and warm and i was compiling MPlayer ...minding my own
business, when i got at the very beginning of the ./configure process this
to say the least intriguing message..( i censored some words... : )

[root@ric MPlayer-0.50pre3]# ./configure
You can get detailed help on configure with: ./configure --help
Please wait while ./configure discovers your software and hardware environment!
Detected operating system: Linux
Detected host architecture: i386
Checking version of gcc ... 2.96, bad
Please downgrade(upgrade) gcc compiler to gcc-2.95.2+ or gcc-3.0+ version!

Note: gcc 2.96 is RedHat's UNOFFICIAL (it can be found only on RedHat sites, or
in RedHat-based distributions) and BUGGY gcc release. gcc 2.96 is TOTALLY
unsupported by us, because it simply SKIPS or badly compiles some MMX codes!
Important: this is NOT an MPlayer-specific problem, numerous other projects
(DRI, avifile, etc..) have problems with this &%$# too. DO NOT USE gcc 2.96 !!!
If you don't want to downgrade, use the --disable-gcc-checking option to avoid
this check, but DO NOT SEND BUGREPORTS OR COMPLAIN, it's *YOUR* fault!
Get ready for misterious crashes, no-picture bugs, strange noises... REALLY!

WOW ! said the lil red riding hood ...
What can be done about this ? Im a bit intrigued ,cause it's not the first time
that
i got strangely behaving applications when compiled on my machine.
Changing gcc versions seem a bit of an adventure.
Does RH have a different release of gcc in the works ?
Should i really downgrade or use non RH gcc packs on the machine ?

Id realy like to have your opinions on this.

Best regards

Richard Hebert
