The complete message is: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:15.

It first appeared when I was attempting to test the replacement IBM sent me for a
failed external SCSI drive. My old system wouldn't recognize it at all. W2k on this
one first recognized it, then didn't the next try. Both Adaptec SCSI cards recognized
it. When I tried Linux, the above message appeared and now I can't boot Linux from
diskette, CD, or hard drive. I thought that by booting from diskette I could re-load
from CD, but it doesn't want to play that way.

Any suggestions? System has an Athlon 1GHz, Seagate 18Gb SCSI, Iomega USB CD-RW.
