I've raised several issues that perhaps should be discussed
on the user list.

This sounds like a mix of technical and people issues. If you
have one PC running Windows that can access your network, you
can run Selenium through Explorer without Perl. Then you
could focus on improving Selenium's command set to make it
easier for all users - be they consultants, users or developers.
People, their motivation and management, would figure
into the results a compnay gets in testing, just as it figures
in all productivity. On the web, I read about companies
using Fitnesse, where they've already built test fixtures for
other tools, but still have trouble getting systems staff to update
data for tests. Perhaps a keen user would do a better job
but not just any user. Another page talked about programmers
writing code to bypass bugs caught in testing, until, late in the
project, someone discovers that 20 to 30% of the bugs are
still hidden in the code. It's amazing what we get away with
sometimes.
I have worked with many brilliant users who would love to
have a test tool like Selenium. One that comes to mind, an
assistant accounting manager who did bookkeeping for
small companies on the side, installed accounting packages
and was very comfortable with computers. He would
stipulate what he wanted or demonstrate logic in a
spreadsheet with a clarity that would rival that of the most
creative (and the most dyslexic) systems people I've worked
with.
His boss, the accounting manager, was a lot of fun, but he
wouldn't touch computers. One of his favourite sayings
was, "Why should I learn computers when I can hire an
asshole like you to do it for me?" He was a huge man
who wore cowboy boots. I'd tell him that, just because
he was big, didn't mean that he couldn't use his brian.
He'd tell me that it was little guys like me who felt they
had to prove something and wanted to play Parchizi at
parties when they could be drinking.
Besides ease of use, you might see if you could make
Selenium more fun.
