SML: Oil seal

Hello all, I think I've noticed oil leaking from my crankshaft oil seal
(under the main pulley).  I was looking at my haynes repair manual (yeah
I know, get a chilton), and it says that the timing cover does not have
to be taken off to replace this seal.  Can anyone vouch for this?  To me
this seems like it would be almost too easy to repair....Any ideas?
