>timing, is this something I could do with, say, a Haynes manual
To perform this operation properly, you will need a timing light. It's not
hard to do, but you need the right equipment. I advanced my timing on my
beloved 94 XE, and it does make a difference--just a bit zippier and more
responsive. Something to keep in mine also is the fact that more ignition
advance is not necessarily better--there is an optimal setting (12 degrees
for the GA16, I think?) beyond which you gain no more power and start to run
the risk of chronic pinging. This is in sharp contrast to my roommate's 89
Saleen--the more you crank the distributor over the more the engine likes
it.

Hope this helps,
JWolfe
