REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.lang.java.servlets
This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup group.name. This is not a
Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.
Newsgroup line:
comp.lang.java.servlets Programming with the Java Servlet API.
RATIONALE: comp.lang.java.servlets
The purpose of this newsgroup is to contain discussion relating to the
creation and use of Java Servlets and the Servlet API. Servlets are
platform independent Java server side modules. They can be used to
extend the capabilities of a server (typically a web server) in a
variety of ways with minimal overhead, maintenance, and support.
Unlike CGI scripts, servlets involve no platform specific
consideration or modifications.
Due to its already high volume and the more generic nature of the
discussions, comp.lang.java.programmer is felt to be inappropriate for
discussions concerning the Java Servlet API. In addition discussion
regarding the the pros and cons of the Java Servlet API are not of
interest to most readers of comp.lang.java.programmer.
There is considerable current interest in servlets, and the existing
Java newsgroups do not in any way focus on servlets, the servlet
API, or servlet engines.
There is an existing mailing list on exactly this topic. Even though
the mailing list is a bit hard to find, the volume of traffic proves
the interest in the topic. Current traffic is 30-60 messages per day
on the servlets mailing list. A topic with this much interest would
for many be better served as a newsgroup rather than a mailing list.
CHARTER: comp.lang.java.servlets
The charter of this newsgroup is to cover discussion of the Java
Servlet API and the use and relative merit of servlet engines.
Discussion about various servlet implementations is welcome.
Posting small bug or example programs is welcome and expected.
Binary postings or attachments are not welcome.
The posting of commercial information to this group is permitted only
if the information is directly relevant to the Java Servlet API.
Announcements of new products or services related to the Java Servlet
API will be allowed.
Spam (the same article or essentially the same article, posted an
unacceptably high number of times to one or more newsgroups) of any
sort is not allowed.
comp.lang.java.servlets will not be moderated.
END CHARTER.
PROCEDURE:
This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase
of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups
should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue
for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For
Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion
warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens.
All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.
This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How
to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these
documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any
questions about the process.
