I already responded to Chris by email, so I'll be brief here:

1. Yes you could've resolved your problem even if the answers were
sent privately: You could've sent email to that person asking them if
they got any helpful responses or otherwise figured out a solution.
How difficult is that?  Of course, you and/or that other person
could've posted the question to a relevant list/newsgroup in the first
place and gotten the answer there.

2. No, every one does not *have* to see an answer to an off-topic
question.  The most considerate thing is that *neither* off-topic
questions or answers should be posted to the list.

I'm sorry, this list can't be all things to all people, and people
posting *and* responding to off-topic questions is only making it
worse.
