I think, if I ever run such a list, I'll have a FAQ mailed to the
user in multiple choice quiz format when they subscribe, and require a
correct set of answers before allowing them to post:

1) The best way to start when you have a general java question is:
   a) look for the answer at http://java.sun.com/products/servlet
   b) spam the list with an "I know this is off-topic but I need
      to know the answer" post.

2) An excellent place to start learning aobut servlets is:
   a) the Servlet Trail of the Servlet Tutorial at:
           http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/servlets/index.html
   b) one of these excellent books on servlets:
_Java Servlet Programming_ by Jason Hunter, O'Reilly Associates,
           etc.
   c) past posts on the servlet archives
   d) spam the list with a "What's a servlet?" post

3) An excellent way to look for external resources is
   a) check the external resources list at:
        http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/external-resources.html
   b) ask your neighbor's dog.

4) A good FAQ to check for extra information is:
   a) http://www.purpletech.com/servlet-faq/
   b) http://www.interpasnet.com/JSS/textes/servfaq.htm
   c) the "Spork FAQ" at http://www.sonic.net/~ian/Spork/spork.faq.html

5) Advertising on the list is
   a) all right as long as it's an XXX site with hot babes
   b) all right as long as you only do it once a day
   c) never all right, although a short product announcement and
a URL for more information is appropriate.

6) Posting attachements or in HTML format to the list is:
   a) all right as long as it's a binary image of a hot babe
   b) all right as long as it's mimencoded
   c) never all right.

7) The best way to get technical support from a vendor is to:
   a) post to a newsgroup
   b) spam the list with a request for information about that product
   c) contact that vendor directly

Forcing the user to take the quiz before allowing them to post
would force them to _read_ the FAQ and maybe get past that
"autodelete" reflex.
