I agree that a better FAQ would be nice. I'm sure that the maintainers of
either of the FAQs listed above would be open to comments; I know Alex
Chaffee (maintainer of the PurpleTech FAQ) has been pretty good about adding
questions and answers that I have submitted.
Creating an addition FAQ might dilute the field a bit. Perhaps if everyone
agreed that a better FAQ was needed, we could combine the current FAQs and
make an "official" FAQ, get as many servlet sites as we can find to link to
the FAQ, and also see if we can get its URL put at the bottom of each
servlet-interest message.
A successful FAQ would probably need to be maintained by a group of people,
so that if one person was away, the next could edit the FAQ.
I notice that both "servletfaq.com" and "servletfaq.org" are not taken. I
know that DreamHost <http://www.dreamhost.com/> offers $10/month hosting.
I'm sure that it wouldn't be too hard to secure the $310 required for two
years of hosting + domain registration fee, perhaps by having some permanent
sponsors.
A successful FAQ would also need people to contribute to it. If I answer a
question on the list that has been answered before, I sometimes remember to
ask Alex to add it to his FAQ. If everyone did this with our new FAQ or
either of the other FAQs, then we'd be in a lot better shape.
Finally, a successful FAQ would need people to read it. Perhaps a line could
be added at the *beginning* of each servlet-interest message that says
"please don't post or reply to this list without first reading the FAQ at:
www.servletfaq.org".
