To run servlets you MUST have JDK 1.2 or 1.3. In addition, you MUST have
one of the following:
Tomcat 3.2
J2SDKEE 1.3
JSDK 1.2 or 1.3

Any one of the latter 3 will run a servlet and incorporate a minimalist
webserver for HTML. You do not need but one; pick and go! Further, Ray is
correct, unless you have them configured for the same port (Tomcat and JSDK
both listen to 8080 by default, J2EE to 7070) and running at the same time.
TA suggested Jason Hunter's book, "Java Servlet Programming, 2d Ed." Jason
covers all these technologies and, while leaving the details to the
implementation documentation, gives a very good overview and them and what
they do (you have to wait until Chapter 11 to get to the J2EE stuff,
though). I strongly concur. Jason's book is without question the best and
most comprehensive compendium on Java servlets to date. You can probably
find it in any good bookstore, or order it from any one of a half-dozen
online book sellers.

There really is no substitution for digging into the documentation and
burning some code.

Cheers!
Mark
